I've seen a few references here to the "Diddley Bow", but didn't know what one was.

I've just looked it up, watched a few Youtube videos, and now I want to make one so badly that I'm thinking about rootling around in the garage to see what I have.

I'm hooked! I've always been in love with slide blues guitar, but have never been any better than crap on a 6 string. I'll probably still be crap, but I don't care!

There is an excellent sequence at the beginning of the movie "It Might Get Loud" where Jack White builds one on the front porch of an old farmhouse, with disinterested cows looking on. When he starts to play it, it is (as my son says) Epic!

Yep, seen it. F**king awesome! I just never imagined you could get that range and sound from a one string instrument. I may have to get Chuck Moore to build me one.

I take it you've already seen Seasick Steve playing Save Me on his electric diddley bo?

Don't get no one to build one for you, build it yourself!

Would it work with a homemade piezo pickup?

It would work, but the sound would be very different to what Seasick Steve is playing there. He's using a magnetic pickup (probably homemade, too).

I reckon if my old friend the Golden Syrup tin is used at the "bridge" end (like on Steve's) then a piezo could be fitted. Yikes, I could make the whole thing for 2.50 including jack socket!!

If I used an Aquila C string would it be a Diddley Uke? Heck, I just invented something!

Yeah...if you don't build it yourself it's not really a didley bow :)

I love Seasick Steve - hadn't seen that particular video before, though. Thanks!

Maybe if you put four strings on it and tuned them GCEA... would that be a new instrument or still a ukulele? Let's open the debate!

You don't need to be that much technical, go ahead and give it a shot! It would be more like a Sunday project, though.

Glad you enjoyed it. That was the first I saw of Seasick Steve (searching for diddley bo videos after watching It Might Get Loud) and it got me hooked. Pure raw awesomeness!

Apparently you are supposed to make these without drawings. That would be over-engineering.

But I suppose you need to bend the spoon just right to hold the string!

It would be more like a Sunday project, though.I looked on Youtube and saw one video that said it takes 10 minutes to build one, once you've got all the bits - and I can believe that.... but - really silly question coming up - presumably, you need an amp? In which case, I'll just have to forget it! I would have LOVED making one of those......

Not at all! You may want to put some type of resonator below the bridge, but it still would work without one.

There are plenty with paint can resonators and other weird devices. I can see me building a lot of these!

Kahuna, I love this and I swear, by hook or by crook, with my own two fair hands, I am going to build one of these things.....Oh yes I am....... not in the next week or two, but in the next few months...... I've got my own tool-box. Declaration made.

I haven't got an amp - perhaps I'll pick one up on ebay - or go for an accoustic one, I don't know yet - have to go into it. But a woman has made one, more than one - if she can do it, I can do it....... Good luck with yours spookefoote! :D

An awesome site. I think I might have to build a 3 string guitar as well. I might see if I can find an old Fisher Price Activity Centre for the body ;)
