Ok, after chording Uncle Rod's practice sheets, in/out, out/in/out fingerpicking and growing callouses, there will come a time to concentrate on learning actual songs. Sure, I can play a few, but I haven't spent time adding them to a personal 'playlist' and calling them 'completed;...

Here's my fantasy list of stuff I'd like to be able to play early on

1. Somewhere over the rainbow (Iz version)
2. A Kiss to build a dream on - Louis Armstrong
3. Stand by Me- Ben E King
4. Billie Jean- Michael Jackson
5. Moondance- Van Morrison
6. Hawiian standard? please suggest one for me
7. blues classic- need some help here too
8. anything Beatles

and for fun cause I'm not a singer.. and these can be talked through..

9. Up Against The Wall Redneck Mother- Jerry Jeff Walker
10. When I'm Cleaning Windows- George Formby

I hope everyone will post a list so I can steal great song ideas from you :)
What does your list of 10 look like?

btw.. having a blast after only 4 weeks of Uke. Everyone on this forum sounds like they are having tons of fun. My new KoAloha Thin Body Tenor gets here tomorrow.."Lord, I promise to wait longer before my next purchase "

I MUST expand my horizons...

Playing music works wonders for that! When I first picked up the uke I never expected to play much other than Tin Pan Alley... which now I rarely play at all.

A couple of the above are on my YouTube (link below) but I think there are far, far better examples out there from far, far better players. Although I might be the only one on YT with an instrumental uke version of Orange Crate Art... hmmm, now I need to find out...

mine changes from day to day and week to week. Lately these ones have been on the list...

Buddy Bolden's Blues - Jelly Roll Morton
Rosetta - Earl Hines
I Can't Get The One I Want - Lou Handman, Billy Rose & Herman Ruby (Cliff Edwards)

Nice selection! The lyrics to Sukiyaki (why is it even called that?) are kind of sad. I'm rather fond of Ashita Ga Aru Sa because it's the best song to sing at karaoke in Japan.

I wish I could keep 10 songs in memory at once. I'm lucky to keep four or five at a time. This week that's probably...

House of the Rising Sun
Tom Dooley
Five Foot Two
Hotel California
There's a Train (original I'm working up for the seasons)

For anything else I have to pull out the iPad or 3-ring binder.

John

Probably 6 of the 10 songs would be ones I wrote. Leaving those out, the 10 cover tunes I enjoy most, at least this week:

Homburg - Procol Harum
Find the River - REM
Supper's Ready - Genesis
South Side of the Sky - Yes
Mr. Blue Sky - Electric Light Orchestra
Love's Not a Competition (But I'm Winning) - Kaiser Chiefs
Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty
Mellotron Scratch - Porcupine Tree

Great thread! Here are my top 10 at the moment:
