Here is my second instrument, almost complete. It's a 6 string tenor, and will be tuned adgcea. Maple body and sides, bearclaw spruce top, mahogany neck, ebony fretboard.
Thanks. I make my living as a sculptor, and have a lot of experience sculpting wood. It's a struggle not getting too carried away with the neck carving...I could spend hours at it and do some pretty elaborate carvings. I think that after I build a few more using this body shape, I'll start developing more abstract, but functional instruments.
I've finished carving and glued the bridge in place on my 6 string uke. Hopefully I can finish the nut and saddle tonight. I'm looking up definitions of all these terms before I type, so I don't call a bridge a saddle, or a saddle a bridge!
I do have finishing questions. I have been using true oil, with pretty good results, but I'm wondering if I'm applying it too thick. I'm getting irregular surfaces, and seem to have to sand too much between coats. I am considering setting up a spray booth.
