View Full Version : How well can you distinguish Hawaiian Brand tenors?

AndrewKuker
08-26-2012, 03:50 AM
Most can admit that these are all good tenors . There's often strong opinions beyond that though. So let's see if this sound sample matches what's in your head. We know you spend the midnight hours alone with one and love it most of all. (or dream of that scenerio) but that's not the point here.

This is 5 K brand Hawaiian tenor ukes. Kamaka, Kanile'a, Ko'olau, KoAloha, and Keli'i. The sound sample was done as straightforeward as possible. Positioning was watched. Not compressed by a camera or computer mic. All high G, strummed & picked.

Ways that it is not perfect- Let me count the ways. strings are factory standard, which varies. Each player/ individual brings out or excels in different ways bringing out different tones from different ukes. It's only one song. Everything gets compressed online. Different rooms will accentuate, there's a very slight overdrive at the loudest moments, which is totally ironic, my bad. No mic is as good your ear but we're just having fun. So the first to guess all 5 right gets $100 gift card and each person after gets $10. So if it's obvious to everyone then we are gonna be generous. small kine, just for fun. We'll let you know in a week. Don't even try to ask Corey! He'll just tell you the truth. "Oh....I don't remember"

Rules- Answers are here and here only. I am telling youtubers to come here. One week and first gets $100 credit memo from our online store. Each additional gets the same but 90% not as cool. One per persona of course...or I gues we could just take your most wrong guess?

Ditto. My answer to the thread title would be, "Apparently...not well at all." I even thought in the past that I didn't care for the stock strings on two of those brands, but I really can't call out which is which. I guess that aesthetics, intangibles and relations with the companies have led to my preferences in the past.

I guess it might prove the standby answer that you can't go wrong with any of them, since they all sound nice.

I've only played 3 of the 5, so...

1. KoAloha
2. Kamaka
3. Kanile'a
4. Keli'i
5. Ko'olau

To my ear #3 was best with 5 a close second. #4 was also good. If #1 isn't KoAloha, I'll be shocked.

1. Keli'i
2. Ko'olau
3. Kamaka
4. Kanile'a
5. KoAloha

Wow, I am shocked! Many reasons. First, I thought that bell-like sound from #1 was very much like my KoAlohas... too bell-like, IMHO, and not "ukey" enough. Second, Kamaka sounding best?! I have played several and I haven't found one I like in person... Third, I said KoAloha a close second. Don't get me wrong, I love KoAloha, but they have fallen out of my regular playing rotation because of their sound...

Of course, if I played like Corey, I guess the instrument wouldn't matter too much...

Hmm. #1 was my favorite. I was sure it was a Kanile'a

OK, gotta add a Keli'i to my list of wanted ukes.

Ok, here it is. The correct answer…

1. Keli'i
2. Ko'olau
3. Kamaka
4. Kanile'a
5. KoAloha

The only ukulele in the group that I do not own is the Keli'i, however, I did own a KPK for a short time this year so I based my decision on the memory of how that sounded. I am pleased that I was only off by one, switching up the Keli'i with the KoAloha. For the record, the day I put my vote in was the same day that I received my KoAloha tenor so I am not surprised that I mixed up that with the one I do not own (Keli'i). After a year of playing the ukulele, and buying/selling a ton in order to get the "right ones" for my ear, I am thrilled that I did so well on this blind testing. At least I feel now that my hearing is discriminating (somewhat). I am also thrilled with the $10 gift card. Thank you Andrew!!!!

Ya, the Keli'i and KoAloha were the most common flip. They were also the only ones with the same set of strings - Worth CT. I wonder how many would have won if they all had worths?

You are right. The Kamaka strings sound helped ID the Kamaka. Likewise with the Ko'olau.

If the Keli'i had the most ring I am selling my Kanile'a right now. I would have liked to hear them all with the same set of strings, as crap strings on a good uke make it sound more like a crap uke. Take a Mustang 289 engine, put different carburetors and different size pipes and mufflers on it and cams, change up the timing, then tell me what year it is by listening to an online video.. and tell me which one is the F150 5.0 liter... without looking.

I WON SOMETHING! I never win anything! Darn Kelii and Kamaka switcheroo. :D

Tigeralum, don't feel bad about the Koaloha answer. Mine was the same as yours until I switched from iPad to laptop. Also... go Tigers, time to change my banner after a certain two-week suspension. ;)

aloha Andrew and CJ
good contest ANDREW.. just got back home to calif yesterday.. nice meeting you last week..

CJ i think the Kamaka LowG strings get a bad rap..maybe they upgraded them..they are underrated i think..(or could be my old ears..ha ha)most people seem to change them right away..got to give them a chance to normalize..i kind of like the bright Hawaiian sound for now>>will see what happens..

1. Keli'i
2. Ko'olau
3. Kamaka
4. Kanile'a

Excellent, yet masochistic listening (over and over again), contest. But to even the playing field, and i know it's a small time consuming pain to put on new strings and then give them a couple of days to settle, how about the same five with the same strings?

Right now I'm visiting on Maui. I went to Bounty Music (sorry Andrew) today, and they boasted that they had 350 ukes on display. i didn't count them, but there were a lot. I tried the high end K brands and the Martin (USA built), and some middle of the road ukuleles and came away with the concern that buying a ukulele without actually playing/listening to it, is a crapshoot. Because what i think sounds wonderful to me, may not be the one that sounds good to the next guy. But kudus to Andrew, because he does put up videos on most of his high end ukes for sale, so we can see and listen. And there is a Kanilea on his site that i have been dreaming about. By the way, i have been lucky to acquire a few ukuleles over the past few years, Kamaka's and Compass Rose. And my first uke is a Kala concert mahogany ($100), and that ukulele has a really nice sound to it, bang for the buck it is excellent. Sorry to the tangential rambling story, but it is best to hear a ukulele before you buy. And if the ukuleles that you are comparing have the same strings, it is easier to compare the tonal qualities of the different brands. That's my two cents. Thanks to Andrew for the big effort towards customer service.

We sent everyone a Private Message to their UU account asking for their personal email to send the GC , virtual GC. I was going to send another to the ones that have not replied but anyone shoot me an email shown at the signature here.

Yes, we will. But then you have to consider that different brand strings are gonna augment different brand ukes. So you would also have to do each of the main string brands. Plus low and high g. All doing gently weeps...ahhhhhh. I would go into a comma while editing.

Thanks Kent. What you say is true. It's best to hear it first. But at a store you would just try the stock strings. There are limitations there also. We have always been brick and mortar first and foremost but being online makes you really work. And it's not at the store. We have a workshop put serious time into every shipment. Kelii is a good example. Rarely do his "feel" good without at least 30 minutes on the bench. They sound good and are nearly half the price of the others but...And every brand takes our time before it's shipped, I don't put it out there much out of pride for our local builders. But these guys all have to be as efficient as possible and the final stages are tedious. I did all the final work and setup at Ko'olau for ten years so I am aware of the right way to do what can be done to optimize the instrument. I work with Joel and Chris daily. Both have nearly 5 years doing nothing but uke setups fulltime for us and mgm. we're super lucky to have them.

Sound samples are fun but just not as good as the real deal. Bottom line - you can always return anything, and we just want our customers to be happy with what they get and to stay happy with it.

Btw, Paul, owner of Bounty, is a family friend. Been supporting Pono/Ko'olau for many years. I would go ther if I was on Maui too. To me our only competition is within. I'm online and Mike is in store. (online is better, you don't need to play them);)

I sent you a PM here at UU. Initially I thought I could send GC's there, to the UU PM's, but realized I need an actual email, then I will email you with it. Thanks, & I apologize, I am still amateur contest runner.
