Out of curiosity...
...can someone tell me if people in Hawaii actually use the term "Aloha Spirit"?
After reading this and other threads I could obviously figure out its meaning, but honestly I've never heard the term before this forum.
Granted, I live in the Midwest so that may have something/everything to do with it :D

To clarify, Act 186, Session Laws of Hawaii 1986 . . .
Hawaii Revised Statues Section 5-7.5 states:

“Aloha Spirit” is the coordination of mind and heart within each person. It brings each person to the self. Each person must think and emote good feelings to others. In the contemplation and presence of the life force.

A “Akahai” meaning kindness, to be expressed with tenderness

L “Lokahi” meaning unity, to be expressed with harmony

O “Oluolu” meaning agreeable, to be expressed with pleasantness

H “Haahaa” meaning humility, to be expressed with modesty

A “Ahonui” meaning patience, to be expressed with perseverance

These are traits of character that express the charm, warmth and sincerity of Hawaii’s people. It was the working philosophy of native Hawaiians and was presented as a gift to the people of Hawaii. “Aloha” is more than a word of greeting or farewell or a salutation. “Aloha” means mutual regard and affection and extends warmth in caring with no obligation in return. “Aloha” is the essence of relationships in which each person is important to every other person for collective existence. “Aloha” means to hear what is not said, to see what cannot be seen and to know the unknowable.

Here's another interesting read . . . The Aloha Spirit -- What it is, who possesses it, and why it is important

I'll close with this one excerpt and I think it sorta says alot . . .
The Aloha Spirit can never be defined or accurately described. There are ways we can express it and help others learn about it, but in the end it's up to each individual to discover it.

Hey, Kanaka -

That closing quote reminded me a lot of two things:

1. When I lived in Honolulu with my wife's Auntie and Uncle, they would basically comment here and there about whether something or someone had "Aloha." Not like an explanation or anything, but like when we would drive H1 and something happened they'd mutter about it not being aloha, and so on. No real definition, just an occasional utterance.

2. Aloha is a lot like the way the former Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart defined pornography in Jacobellis v Ohio: I know it when I see it.

Aloha Kanaka916,
Mahalo for sharing, so very true.
We all have the Aloha Spirit within us, some of us are lucky to have found it, nurtured it, and lived it.

Excellent post, bro. :) :shaka:

Aloha, everyone!

The "Hawaiians" who started our uke club live the aloha spirit. It's what makes our club a really good one, with endless patience for beginners.

Mahalo for sharing this with everybody. I really love the letter-by-letter definition of Aloha by Pilahi Paki, I first became of aware of it when I read Eddie Kamae's book and he cited that was a major influence to him.
I strive to live Aloha every day!

Man, what a great post, and great timing, too.

I'm sharing this with my students.

Cheers, Kanaka.

“Aloha” is the essence of relationships in which each person is important to every other person for collective existence.

Thank you for this! Really appreciated it. I was thinking about this quote, and how we're all connected ...on a certain level. Our decisions ripple for good or bad, being part of the problem or solution. Our attitudes affect everyone we encounter and are passed down to our friends and family, community..country. This is something to strive for; caring for every other human, giving and helping with pure motive.
The word Aloha is Hawaiian but not exclusive to it. There's goodness in life to be found and appreciated and passed along. But this emotional and spiritual intelligence that native Hawaiians tapped into seems to be harder and harder to channel in these times we live. Constantly influenced by propaganda and selfish ambitions. Nice to read this quality of expression.
Thanks for the post and link Kanaka

Aloha Spirit: "A presence which can't be seen, touched, or heard but is expressed from the center of one's being to all of creation".

Happy Aloha Friday to all!

Great thread!

It's good to review and think about what Aloha is.

Nice post, Kanaka. Your posts are always thoughtful.

Here's a video of surf legend Gerry Lopez describing the surfing aloha spirit...wow, what he says applies precisely to Ukulele and Uke forum. And to all things in life on this crowded orb.

Check it out.
