Any other luthiers ever had someone call you on the phone and determine if they like and would purchase your uke by what it sounds like on the phone?

That's truly bizarre. Must almost be insulting from a luthier's point of view...

The problem with a telephone connection is that it doesn't have the proper bandwidth for music. Telephones have a bandwidth of about 3100 Hz (300 Hz to 3400 Hz). With that, you will lose the fidelity of the low notes and the richness of the harmonics. That is why “hold music” sounds so muddy and muffled when you are put on hold. I bet it’s virtually impossible to tell a great sounding ukulele from a cheap plywood one over the phone.

Unless you have amazing speakers and the recording was done with an amazing mic and you have amazing ears, I just don't think its worth watching vids or listening to an internet recording of an instrument in order to determine the tone of the instrument.
Through the phone is utterly ridiculous.
