1915. Johnny Black.

popular standard. Huge hit for The Mills Brothers where it reigned at #1 on the US Billboard charts between November 1943 and January 1944. Even today it remains one of fewer than 30 songs to have sold over 10 million copies worldwide, and was voted one of the songs of the 20th century.

More importantly, (at least to this ol' nerd!), is that four lines of it are sung by Rodolfo in the first act of Arthur Miller's play A View from the Bridge. It is also referenced in stage directions of the third scene of Tennessee Williams' play A Streetcar Named Desire.

My favourite rendition was performed by the incomparable Cliff Edwards. This version played on a baritone ukulele. Thankyou for watching folks. :)

Thanks for this one, Jon. You really did that song justice! Cliff Edwards is a pretty hard act to follow, but you're right behind him here...

Could listen to that song over and over and over again- So sweet Jon

awesome link Dave. how good is that eh? But the bigger question...what gets me with a lot of these old clips is how ridiculously well these people sing whilst smiling from ear to ear the whole time...man, howd'ya do that!!! :)
