The site is working fine, but there are some spam threads that I can't report because somehow the spammer is posting empty threads. Isn't that not even possible usually? Maybe they found an exploit? Anyway, teabag2 has posted a bunch of spam threads and if there's an exploit being used, maybe Norton is seeing that? Not a huge fan of Norton but maybe that's it.

Update: Spam threads are gone, but there's not any way something could be attacking your account specifically. It sounds like Norton just being Norton to me.

I noticed the problem after I opened either a thread or attachment in the marketplace.
it seems to be attacking my account...what should I do open a new account?
usually on the main page of the forums it is okay, but when I open the sub page like uke talk or respond
to a thread it slows down my computer..anybody have any ideas how to deal with this?

I'm not sure how they have developed in the last year, but if you would have asked that question about 5 or 6 years ago I would have answered: get rid of Norton. They were a major resource hog back then, there were and are plenty other alternatives or Norton, even free ones.
Security programs do slow computers down, and they do even more if they think there's something wrong with a webpage, scanning and comparing files to their database.
The best I can say at this point to help you out is to get in touch with the staff of UU, and let them contact Norton. They'll both benefit from the result of that contact, whether the site is infected or not. In the first case UU can get their site cleaned, and in the second case Norton can adjust their warnings to prevent false alerts in the future.

Agree. When I set up pc computers for a medical department i was running we used lots of freeware. Adware, spybot, etc. i was not a Norton fan. No problems here on my iPad,macbook, etc. A few weeks ago they were having server issues which were very obvious, but everything has been running great for a while now. Maybe try the Leo Laporte chat room. They may be able to help. Best of luck it makes less sense it is effecting macs and pcs. It would be nice to reopen your account here with your same handle name and see if that resolves it. Maybe MMstan without the gap as a new handle and see if that fixes it. Might check your Internet clock speed at your house and make sure it isn't your Internet provider.

Use a registry cleaner or reinstall your computer if you have the installation disk. Save what you need first, but a reinstall will be like having a new computer compared to what you have now. Do you run disk defragment it helps.

This is beyond me if you did a speed test and it's not a router/wifi issue. If it is only happening on ukulele underground and not other sites. Like I said if that is the case Leo Laporte has a chat room with guys that live and breath this stuff.

Haha good. That clock speed makes the most sense especially with it being a Mac and PC issue and you tried here logged out of account.

Stan, I'm glad everything's back to normal. Beware of popups on your computer claiming to come from legitimate businesses and telling you you need to click on the popup to fix some problem on your computer. They're often from criminals "phishing" on your computer and trying to steal money from you. My mother clicked on a popup like that and was instructed to pay $99 (which she did) to have "virus protection software" downloaded to her computer. The download was actually a virus that would have permitted the thieves to use her computer to spam other computers. Legitimate companies don't solicit business this way. if you don't have Norton installed on your computer but you get a Norton popup, delete the popup and report it to your ISP.

Everything normal here...

I wouldn't own Norton on a bet, honestly. Despise it utterly. The only thing I've ever found it good for is preventing legitmate software from installing or running properly! LOL

You may have been clobbered by that new Java exploit - it affects all versions of Java, all browsers, and all platforms - if you've visited a corrupted "payload" site with all of your computers then it could be on all of them. Go into your browser's settings and disable all java related plugins and see if that fixes your problem. If so, I wouldn't do anything financially sensitive on your computers until you have somebody check them.

John

Ohh...see you got it sorted. Good!

I'm with john Norton will never be on one of my computers again!!! It really does a lot of interference and consumes massive time and memory.
first I've been doing this for a long time. I highly recommend 2 FREE programs available on the web, I use file hippo for loads as I've never had them load bad stuff yet.
program 1 Ccleaner you will be amazed at the speed you pick up , be selective in what you let it clean I use my anti virus to remove cookies as I like to keep some of my sign ons automatic.
program 2 Eusing free registery cleaner does a great job and also helps with speed.

antivirus programs ,other than Norton take ur pick I run trend micro a lot of people like macaffee I think its a toss up . trend used to take forever to boot but its better than it was there are probably half a dozen good ones get one with hijacker protection as they are a real pain in the butt to cure a lot of registery work and ya really have to be careful.

Hi stan under internet eplorer uncheck cookies guess i shoulda been a tad clearer in my original post but all the things you are trying to save are stored in cookies .
My antivirus does a smart cookie removal --- deletes the tracker s and keeps the ones for the sites you use. one of the reasons I like trend.
did it help your speed?

Isn't it funny how right when you get virus symptoms the "anti-virus software" is right there to take your money. Just some awesome dudes coming to save the day. The thing that surprised me was it just happening here at UU. You did change passwords after clearing it right? btw, many website's don't function as well on IE. try chrome, ff, or others and compare. Everything seems to go haywire on IE.

as far as connection speed overall. Oceanic with the "gamer" service is the best I have found, but I'm in the country, not too sure what's available for you townies. It get's frustrating though, I am no stranger to that emotion. Kids nowadays know more than us about how to deal with this stuff. anyway...the one good thing about slow internet is that you can have a uke on you lap to play when it is loading...loading.....loading...oh ya, try not to smash the uke over your computer. well..atleast not your 5k :stop:

want to make your computer run 200% faster, uninstall everything by nortons, go for free avg instead, nortons has always been a dinosaur that just eats system resources, and these days windows defender does as good a job on its own imo.

just as an experiment about 3 years ago i removed all virus software from our pc's, I run adblocker on the browsers and a thing called no script, between them they have stopped all intrusive things from websites (which is the only place you can get a virus really), anyway I started with an old laptop running xp as a test (so it wouldn't matter if it did get infected i would just format the HDD if it needed it) every month I would download and install avg anti virus and run it once to check, then do a full uninstall and guess what ? I never got a virus and the little laptop ran like a trooper, now as I said I have extended that to all my pc's, I figure that as long as I keep things backed up and have my essential software and drivers all on a cd or these days a usb stick then I would rather have to spend a couple of hours once in a blue moon re installing stuff than having to put up with computers that ran like dogs for no reason.

It seems to me that anti virus companies have capitalised on peoples irrational fear of viruses, sure in the early days of the web it was a small problem but these days most of us have learnt not to trust email attachments or dont just click on pop up windows, (with ad blocker installed you dont get those anyway).

I am always amazed when i see some peoples computers and even though they have a full expensive behometh of a thing like nortons running their webpages are still crowded full of ads and rubbish, their internet experience is totally different than mine, like I said I NEVER see ads anywhere, not on google sites, not on youtube, not on forums, not on facebook, not even on the commercial websites like cnn etc....

It's a couple of simple mouse clicks and its done, the first thing I do with any pc I am asked to work on (it's part of what I do for a living) is to remove all the anti virus software, people are amazed and I have never had one client ring me later and say they are now swamped with viruses, it just doesn't happen.

When was the last time most of you actually got a virus (those of you not looking at porn sites) ?

trust me, getting rid of nortons, symantec, pc tools, all of those bloody things will change your online experience for the better by far, it will change the way you think about the internet.

Times have changed, technology has moved on, people have learnt the basic rules of online safety (I hope).
