My wife and I are going to be spending Thanksgiving with my Mother-in-law in Los Gatos, CA this year. And a little more.

So we just got our tickets - we'll be arriving at SFO on November 15, and I'll be headed back to New York on November 27.

I'm hoping to get together with TCK/TCW (Dave and Melissa, for the enlightened) and Gary (gyosh) while we are there.

Anyone else interested in a South Bay Ukulele Get Together?

Keeping in mind that there are Family Obligations, and a "Honey Do" list waiting for me, and that my wife has a meeting on Saturday before Thanksgiving, I'm still pretty sure that I can try and get together with people a time or two.

Drop me a PM, or reply here if you are interested/available!

Rick showing off again? :)

I had a great time hanging out in San Diego last April. TONS of uke meet ups down there.

I'm up in San Francisco but if an ukulele gathering happens at the right time that weekend, I could drive down to the Los Gatos/Santa Cruz area. Please keep me posted. Also, the San Francisco Ukulele Rebellion (http://www.meetup.com/San-Francisco-Ukulele-Meetup/) is scheduled to have one of its every-other-week meetup on Sunday November 25 from 1-3 pm at the Oakside Cafe at the corner of Oak and Baker Streets in San Francisco.

And yes, Gary (gyosh) is good people.

All sound great, Ric, but since I'll be in the San Jose area, I won't be able to get down there... it is a bit of a hike. And I'm a little intimidated by the traffic, to be honest.

(I'm pretty much the passenger when I'm in the Bay Area, anyway. My wife grew up driving there, and I tend to avoid it. What I call a traffic jam is what she calls a relaxing drive on 101.)

I have to drop my wife off at SFO around 6 am that day, then back to San Jose - my first Solo Trip on that stretch of asphalt - I'm more than a little terrified. As wonderful as heading back up for the meet-up is, I don't know if I can handle two round trips in the same day... Although I could probably just go and hang around a Starbucks for 7 hours... Unless my Mother-in-law has something she needs me to do that day.

And yes, Gary (gyosh) is good people.

And yes, you're right - Gary is Good People. I met him once when he made a special trip to the San Jose Ukulele Club, just to meet me, and then we realized we'd both been at a Jim D'Ville workshop. He was also a year ahead of my wife at Leigh High School in San Jose. (Which proves the world is really smaller than we thought...)

Sunday traffic is a breeze and if you want a more scenic route, cut across Hwy 380 to Hwy 280 for your drive back down.

I don't know if we can squeeze that one in, but I'd love to.

I'll have to speak to my co-conspirators (aka the folks who don't have problems driving in California, as I do.) Depending on the weather, we'd have to get a really early start on 17 over the hill to make it before 10 AM. (like, on the road by 7 at the latest, or just think of 17 as a parking lot.)

Thanks for the Heads Up!

My wife and I will be in Santa Cruz over Thanksgiving. The Santa Cruz Ukulele Club has a jam on the beach (behind the Crow's Nest Restuarant at the harbor) every Saturday morning starting at 10:00. I live in Santa Cruz, and you could easily leave Los Gatos on a Saturday morning at 9am, and make it to the Santa Cruz harbor by 10am.

I've gone down there a few times, peeked over peoples shoulders at the songbooks while strumming along. Pretty basic stuff, but fun.
Cheers,

Skottoman is right. You could easily make it, especially from Los Gatos. Stop at Sylvan Music before you head home! Actually . . . maybe you shouldn't. You might go home with a new Compass Rose or Graziano or Santa Cruz :biglaugh:

Also, thank you for all the warm fuzzies :)

You are most welcome to come by the shop and see how we build Compass Rose ukes...and see some of the new instruments we'll be building in prototype stage..."Le Jazz Uke" and our baritone...and a semi-secret design based on the baritone that is sure to be knocked off by other uke makers once we reveal it at NAMM. Imitation being the highest form of flattery, and all that...

Okay, I guess it was Summer when I saw the traffic jammed up trying to get onto 17.. We hadn't been there on a weekend in November yet.

We did stop at Sylvan last year - I played a lovely 5-string Rosewood Compass Rose, and would probably have gone for it, had I not just purchased the Sceptre the day before. I also played another Compass Rose, a National Resonator, and several other lovely instruments.

Then I went outside the Special Room, and picked up a couple of the standard production ukes on the main wall... and put them back very quickly. Amazing how easily one can become spoiled so quickly

When I was at Sylvan last year, a couple of your Luthiers stopped by, Rick. Young guys, but great to talk to. Answered a few of my questions on the instruments, and left me mulling over many more that I hadn't thought of until the conversation.

If we do make it down to Santa Cruz this trip (which we should, because I've got a cousin who lives there, and works at Book Store Santa Cruz), I'll check with the shop, and see if there is anyone there when I have a chance to swing by.

Hi, Kurt,

Too bad the timing doesn't mesh with our uke club meetings. Fellow New Yorker Ron is back again with his banjo uke and his last song didn't have anything to do with chickens.:)

The SJUC jam at the New Almaden Community Club is on Sunday, Nov. 18th from 1-whenever we want to stop. It would be nice to see you.

If you don't get together with the Santa Cruz club, you will have missed an opportunity to play with one of best clubs in the world.
Great players, terrific voices and really cool folks. We are thinking about moving to Santa Cruz from SoCal just to join the club.
We go to both Smoldering and Burning Uke.

Ok, we're. In California, despite the best efforts if United Airlines to prevent our trip.

Due to family obligations, I'm not sure when I'll be able to get together with anyone. I'm hoping to get to the SJUC get together at the New Almaden Community Club tomorrow (Sunday), but my wife is still waiting to hear back from someone.

As an additional aside, a friend who heard me play at my father-in-law's memorial service last year asked if I could play at the service for her parents today. So I will be doing so.

As the family agenda materializes, I'll post here and try and get together with anyone who is available.

Welcome back to California, Kurt! If you're available next Saturday evening, there's the Fourth Sunday of the Month Kanikapila in Alameda. Here are the details, as quoted from the Facebook page of the host, Island Hawaiian Studios (https://www.facebook.com/islandhawaiianstudios?ref=ts&fref=ts).

Kanikapila (Hawaiian Music Jam Session)
Next Saturday, Nov 24th, 6-9:30pm
Island Hawaiian Studios
1122 Lincoln Avenue
Alameda, CA 94501
Free Admission
Dinner Plates and Beverages available for purchase
Bring your family and friends!

The group mostly uses a book called He Mele Aloha, although people sometimes bring copies of song sheets and sometimes a mashup breaks out and the group goes through several songs at once. I've been to the past two and I've had a lot of fun there. And, you know, "bring your family and friends!"

Hi, Gary

Check the SJUC Events and Calendar Page (http://sanjoseukeclub.org/Events%20&%20Calendar.html)

The SJUC has our Sunday jam on the Sunday following the meeting, from 1-4ish. I get there around noon to set up the tables and chairs. If the weather is nice, some people show up around noon with their lunch and eat at the outdoor picnic tables and chat while listening to the Alamitos Creek babbling nearby. It is quite nice there. FYI: there is spotty cell phone coverage in New Almaden and none at the Clubhouse.

Oh, I got his email. He opens at 11:00.

Not sure I can afford a uke, but he's got strings and other stuff...

Besides, Dave and Mel need to visit Ukulele Source...

. . . and Gryphon if they haven't been there. Any you'll need to go to Sylvan if you visit Rick, you'll pass it on the way to his shop (on the left just after McDonalds).

I'll PM you my number if I don't go up to the Sierra's to cut a tree with my son.

Mark, is it Baker and oak, or Broderick and Oak? Google Maps says Broderick, and we all know "if it on the internet, it must be true.
