Herb Ohta Ukulele

Hi I was wondering if you could help me out. I am currently looking for a ukulele and was wondering what recommendations would you recommend to have a ukulele that is easy and mellow on the ears like Herb's.

I understand he plays a martin but I don't think I can swing a martin. Maybe somewhere in the 400-500 (maybe slightly more if it is reeaaly worth it) range, willing to buy used.

Just looking for some ideas

What size? lots of ukes in that price range. Any other criteria other than a mellow sound? Pickup? Usually, you can get strings to mellow out most ukes, and other strings to brighten them up.

Spent some time in west palm beach and two summers on big pine key doing oceanography. If I remember correctly Jensen beach gets sea turtles laying eggs. Bet it's a nice place to live. It is on my list of places to visit.
