Mary Hopkin's 1968 version was the first single released by Apple Records. The English lyrics were written by Gene Raskin, the music by Boris Fomin, probably based on a Russian folk song.

Thanks, RichM for the "British Invasion" season. The impact of that music and that era cannot be overstated.
