I'm guessing that the parenthesis mean nothing special. In other words, just play a G6 chord.
If anything, they might mean that the 6th is optional. That is, that you could get away with playing a regular ol' G chord if you didn't feel like getting fancy. I've seen that with entire chords, but never with just a chord extension like that. So if that's what it means, it's a little weird.
