just realised that perhaps it isn't clear: you do NOT have to choose between the "tea" and "coffee" categories for your official entry....you are allowed and encouraged to submit a song for EACH ONE!!!! cheers all :)

a blog to get you started:

really hoping for some surprises this week, and that you'll trawl through your collections and find a few gems with lyrics we'd forgotten about

I will crash the party with this terrible entry.

I blame a combination of Irish Whiskey and the ukulele for this. I did mean to say Coffee Tea or Honey instead of coffee tea or me in the beginning. It was either ramble this off, or try Coffee In Bed by Squeeze, and that was way too many new chords to learn tonight.

This is a VERY loose interpretation of the Johnny Cash "Cup of Coffee" song. I'm sure someone else can really do it justice.

Disclaimer: I have been drinking a bit prior to this, and uke jamming with my sister in law. Unrelated note: earlier tonight we had 5 people drop by unexpectedly, so I passed out the spare ukuleles and we jammed to Bruce Springsteen.

This is honestly amazing! I work at a Starbucks and one day this week while I was walking back to work from a break, I was thinking about how fun it would be if the theme one of these weeks would be coffee and tea. Just awesome!

Hey, Caroljean!

Always glad to meet another Barista!

I've been with the 'Bux for almost 6-1/2 years now; I tell people that as a firefighter, I spent almost 25 years being accused of being paid to drink coffee; Now, I do get paid to Drink Coffee.

And I drink a lot less of it, like it better, and I'm far more discerning about what I will drink. [like my daily double-tall ristretto upside-down latte.)

Can't wait to see your song.

cheers for kicking things off brother jamz, very very cool stuff here. I love me some spoken word songs...Tom Russell is one of the best at it. But your delivery was superb man. And I love that tshirt...that's how I look and feel after the first 3 or 4 short blacks in the morning. Hilarious ending. :biglaugh: Awesome work all round. :)

Smokin man. Love the feel. Incredible lyrics, you really conveyed the power in them mate, and there's deep intensity in your voice here. Nice little hammer-ons in the bridge too gave it some juice. This is my kinda tune as well...sheesh... another one I'm gonna have to learn.

something else I need to make clear folks...you can submit more than one song in the coffee and tea categories, but please be sure to nominate in your clip which is your actual 'entry' in that category. Don't want to tie your hands when you've probably got a few up good'uns up your sleeve for us all to watch. Cheers gang...

Tea making is there a right way to do it? Here are my ideas.
Based on some conversations with some Japanese, who are
supposed to know something about tea making.

1) Boil the water until the bubbles are the size
of lobster's eyes and you get a "bright" tea.
2) If the bubbles in the water are as big as an
Bull's eye the the water is spoilt and you get a "dull" tea.

The explaination for this is that too vigerous boiling drives
out all the oxygen in the water and it loses its vitality.

3) Brew the tea for only 3 minutes this ensures a "bright" tea.
4) If you brew the tea for more that 3 minutes then the tannins
are extracted from the leaves and the tea becomes "bitter" or "stewed"

5) It is a little known fact that tannin is in actual fact a pH indicator
like litmus or phenolthalene and it will change colour according to the pH of the tea.

6) To correct a "bitter" tea you can add a slice of lemon.
As you add the lemon the tea will visibly lighten as the citric acid
from the lemon lowers the pH and the tannin reacts.

Come on!!! own up!!! you just invented all that didn't you ???

art of making an excellent cup of tea. You are just a wealth of information.
And provide musical entertainment as well - what more can be asked.
Fabulous.

The Bird Singing was courtesy of Ruby Red my little Gouldian Finch. Was surprised he didn't
do a fly by while recording. He has full reign of that room. Apparently he was enjoying the
music as he he piped in a number of times. He is so cute. What a lovely compliment like
a zephyr i love the wind. Indeed all creation is alive and dances in it's beauty.

"Rock the Glock" I expect that has a different connotation in your household than in the ghetto. I think it is a very fine
turn of phrase. I once made a xylophone but I could ever get much of a sound out of it. I ate it in the end.

I drink a good bit of tea, but clearly not enough...I'm missing out on things. I hope these are small cups.

"The first cup moistens my lips and throat.
The second cup breaks my loneliness.
The third cup searches my barren entrails only to find therein some thousand volumes of odd ideographs.
The fourth cup raises a slight perspiration---all the wrongs of life pass out through my pores.
At the fifth cup I am purified.
The sixth cup calls me to the realms of the immortals.
The seventh cup---ah, but I could take no more! I only feel the breath of the cool wind that raises in my sleeves. Where is Elysium? Let me ride on this sweet breeze and waft away thither."
---Lu Tung

Friendly factoid about tea: Tea is given both to calm the overexcited and to enliven the downhearted---two effects from the same pot of tea. From a scientific standpoint, apparently tea stimulates both alpha and beta brain wave activity, so that you feel slightly stimulated and evened out at the same time.

Holey moley, you guys don't hang around do you.
I've just popped on to see what the next season is and find 9 pages already... I'd better get my thinking cap on.

And some cracking entries already I see! I tell you what, I just love this contest, every day there's some great new uke tunes to listen to free of charge... how wonderful is that!

This is a VERY loose interpretation of the Johnny Cash "Cup of Coffee" song. I'm sure someone else can really do it justice.
Disclaimer: I have been drinking a bit prior to this
Combing drinking and music is never a bad thing! A cracking start to the 35th, always up for a bit of Cash.

Not an official entry, but here's one I did for dktoller's "summer beverage" contest on UU. Maybe someone else can really do it justice. Or maybe I'll give it another go, it's a great song.

Jazzytastic... I love this!

I know it's late
I know you're weary
I'm just a coffee achiever tonight and tomorrow I may sleep all day

3 tracks already! Some fine fine work there my friend. Wonderful stuff.

Here's my first entry for this week. I think this is gonna be for tea as I have some other coffee ideas.
Loving the trumpet solo!!!

Tea making is there a right way to do it? Here are my ideas.
Now this just makes me want to pour myself a glass of wine and stretch out in the sunshine. Sadly it's October at 10AM. Mind you...

OK here is my entry for Season 35 -

Mmmm strawberry-kiwi tea. Lovely sentiment, lovely song.

Here is my Tea entry today- going super old school, really old school, like back to kindergarten.
He he he... quality song choice.

This song by the McGuire Sisters was a million seller when I was a little kid, went to #1 in the US and #14 in the UK.
Sunshine, tea, uke, porch... now that's somewhere I like to be.
Great stuff, love the key change!

Hi All here is my Tea entry, still suffering from my cold and still home alone.
Cold? Have some tea and honey... oh the irony. Great performance... I like this a lot.

OK my grandkids made an original song about coffee three years ago for another contest.
Noa truly only had been playing the ukulele for four days and he conspired with his sister
Elli to come up with this song. I was astounded by that strum and still am.
Indeed what strumming! Are we allowed to cover this or is there some copyright issue? Love it.

Here's my "Tea" entry. This is a song by Genesis about someone who just experiences the world through watching television. This is the most challenging song in my repertoire.
Challenging indeed... I couldn't even begin to think of trying this. Cracking performance Gromit!

Here's the honey song. I love Tom Petty, and have never heard this song before, but I really like it.]
Tom Petty! Rifftastic!

Time for us to 'rock the glock' again! This is our entry for the tea category. English Tea by Paul McCartney. Wait for the drum solo...
Now I'm a sucker for a glock in fact it may inspire to me to try and persuade my wife you get the steel drum out! LOVE the "drum solo"

Here's my entry this week. I was a bit rushed to record this today, so it's kinda...uh...well...it is what it is! Enjoy!

Some superb rhythmic playing!

I made a tea entry, it's an original that mostly outlines my hatred of the stuff, but I wanted to enter anyway.
Speak as I true Brit I'm not sure I can vote for a song inspired by a hated of tea ;) Only joking, great tune :) A great way to have "a tea that tastes like a coffee", is to make one of each and use the same spoon... it generally tastes awful.

Here's a coffee song for you, Jon! This is a Rick Danko song from his first solo album (1977) after The Band broke up. Back in college when I first heard this song, I had a friend who used to drink 25 cups of coffee a day. He was...peppy.

Let's Have Another Cup of Coffee, by Irving Berlin.
I found more than one variation on the lyrics. The original mentions John D. Rockefeller and Herbert Hoover, but I like these better for today.

Nicely done Ginny great strumming and lovely clear vocals and love how you look into the camera your personality is shinning through, a skill i yet have to learn and muster :) great job my lady and peach for me to :)

Two favorite songs of mine fit these categories this week. Here's one. I've never tried to play this song before because I didn't want to ruin it with my less than fancy finger work. But, it fits the theme and was one of the first songs that came to mind. It's such a beautiful song so please don't let my attempt cause you to shy away from checking out the recording by Colin Hay of Men At Work.

Thanks, bro. The chords are straight off of chordie.com's version except when I didn't pay attention to them. The key change at the end just felt right at the moment so I tried going from c to g. It only had a few chords so I thought I could transpose it on the fly but, as you can see, I screwed it up once sort of majorly.

It was easy to decide which coffee and tea songs I wanted to do. So far, I haven't been able to come up with a honey song that inspires me. My favorite song by My Bloody Valentine is called "Honey Power", but when I Googled the lyrics (usually buried beneath a wall of fuzzed guitar), I don't think I can bring the song off without campiness:

Change my mouth
Here with your tongue
Your body soft
Over there where you're laying down

Hold my flower
Here and (you will now)
Fall
Sure you did from appearing smile

Ooh, bloom
I drink to you
Feel you come
High enough 'till you're sleeping and...

Take my flower
Touch before I die
Over you
Then we'll sleep for another hour

Here's a coffee song for you, Jon! This is a Rick Danko song from his first solo album (1977) after The Band broke up. Back in college when I first heard this song, I had a friend who used to drink 25 cups of coffee a day. He was...peppy.

How did your gig go?

I am a big U2 fan actually, so if you want to listen to more U2 ukulele covers, I did 23 different U2 songs as a challenge to myself, they are on souncloud:

I think this should show them all:
UKE22 on Soundcloud (http://soundcloud.com/tracks/search?q%5Bfulltext%5D=uke22+u2&q%5Btype%5D=&q%5Bduration%5D=)

I must warn you though some are better then others ;-), and this is totaly off-topic of course.

Why wouldn't I like your entry, John?

It isn't real, it is just a story made (I really, really hope!) up just for fun.

Or, as I will occasionally say (in my head) when someone orders a black coffee... "I dunno... Do we actually make regular coffee here?"

I also enjoy pointing out that our 12 oz coffee costs less than Dunkin' Donuts 10 oz coffee, and actually has flavor. (g)

The coffee is good I was just having a bit of fun. I go in for a latte once in a while but it's not something I can bring myself to do often, especially since my Keurig makes pretty decent coffee, too. My youngest daughter has a brother-in-law who is a barista at one of the local Starbucks. He used to bring home a machine and all the fixin's for family holiday gatherings - talk about bringing your work home with you!

I do have to tell you about a real world experience I had in a Starbucks here in Ft. Worth, though (hopefully you'll get a laugh out of it, I know I did). It was a few years ago and my oldest daughter's family was in town for Christmas. The women and kids were all off somewhere one evening and I was going to make some hot chocolate. My son-in-law was like, "no, no, let's go to Starbucks, I'll treat. You just have to try their seasonal peppermint hot chocolate!"

Well, since he offered to treat...

Anyway, I about died laughing. We got to the place and after standing in line behind about five other customers he ordered two peppermint hot chocolates. I watched as the gal got two packets of - and I'm not joking here - Swiss Miss - and added hot water and a drop or two of peppermint extract.

When we walked out I turned to him and said, "You do realize that we just drove three miles, waited behind five other customers, and paid about ten bucks for two cups of Swiss Miss and a few drops of peppermint extract, when we could have stayed home, grabbed the Swiss Miss Dark and peppermint extract that I had in my cupboard..."

(Disclaimer - I'm sure Starbucks normally has their own packets of hot chocolate mix that are magical but I know what I saw. Maybe that store ran out of mix and ran to the local Kroger for something to get them through 'til the next delivery. The funny part though was that the gal didn't even try to hide the Swiss Miss box. No...the really funny part was the look on my son-in-law's face! LOL )
