Hello, ive been wondering what peoples dream uke is like what brand and specs and stuff like that

Louis0815
10-18-2012, 11:41 PM
tricky question, simple answer: The one I fall in love with when I play it.

I guess there's way too many factors accounting to "the dream uke". It starts of with the purely technical specifications like size & materials and probably quality of manufacturing (incl. intonation), and it continues with personal opinions about the overall finish (some love glossy, some hate it; action height is also important), selection of the "right" strings - and finally it boils down to unique and personal feelings about the sound of the end product which might even differ depending on one's mood.

I was completely happy with my Ohana soprano - then I played a couple of KoAloha's that cost many, many times more. So my dream uke would be a K brand. But I do not need one.

Here's mine. A custom KoAloha tenor I already own. It looks awesome and plays like butter.

There's a few that totally make me swoon:
- Hawaiian ukes in koa: KoAloha PCM-10 Pikake Concert, Ana'Ole Koa Tenor, vintage Kamaka white labels...
- Kiwaya KTS7, or even more so their KCM Master Koa Concert
- That vintage Martin koa baritone that was on Craigslist recently, with black bindings and black friction tuners
- One of those vintage-looking blond Palm Tree ukes with rope binding
- Mya Moe tenor in myrtle with bloodwood bindings
A girl can dream I guess!

I'd love a " Le Noir " by Pete Howlett . What I want is a Vintage Martin Style 2 clone but in Black with BWBW binding . I have a Mahalo Les Paul in black and I love the way it looks . Makes me lust for a Black Martin style 2 clone. Just typing this into the computer is drawing me closer to getting one , ........ must stop ,...........

I had my Dream Uke built by Willie Wixom, a design I had in my head for a very long time (My Avitar). Other than that, one like Staci's Kanilea. Played one at a store in Waikiki, (not Puapua) fell in love with it, and my Homeland on it....WOW. Did'nt want to put it down but the man there was kinda grumpy. If ever I should buy one, it would'nt be from him....................BO..................

ooooh, so much fun to dream

* Chuck Moore mango soprano or concert
* erivel's Pohaku blonde island girl tenor (http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/group.php?discussionid=3402&do=discuss) (spruce/maple) except in soprano or concert scale
* any Collings would be fine but thankfully I already own my dream one (http://www.acousticmusicworks.com/UC2916.html) thanks to mum and dad
* Black Bear spruce/maple concert
* This (http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/showthread.php?68872-Next-Up-The-Curly-Twins/page8) one

oooh, I think I need a valium thickshake after all that... :p

My dream uke... From a maker would be something along the lines of Mainland's long neck concert pineapple, in solid mango with gloss finish, made sustainably.
My dream uke as a personal goal is to build a playable, high quality uke out of clay. Again a pineapple.

Not kidding when I say a 6-string Flea. Been thinking of asking FMM about the possibility, but would rather they didn't laugh at me since I know nothing about building ukes, tention, etc. I just know what I want! LOL Fleas bite - mine did a long time ago and does every time I play. <3

Brad donaldson is making me 2 matching ukes soon. Using some Koa ive had since 2007. I had been looking for some tops and finally found them recently Redwood Sinker! my dream ukes

Definitely a custom Moore Bettah with beautiful inlays. My favorite so far is his Canoe Wahine. I have no artistic talent, so it would be maker's choice for the inlay.

Choice number 2 is a DeVine.

I can't imagine that you could go wrong with any uke from either maker. I also love my Pepe; he is relatively new to the uke scene, but I think his reputation is growing. His ukes sound unbelievable, though they do lack the flash of Moore Bettahs or Devines.

Easy! A Mya-Moe six-string baritone classic with straight-grain redwood top, purpleheart sides, ebony body binding, rosette, and fretboard. Bloodwood fretboard binding. Normal geared tuners with black buttons, a K&K twin spot pickup, and the headstock design done with the two body woods.

Unsure on oil or poly finish, though...

PTOEguy
10-19-2012, 08:41 PM
I think right now it would be a Surf Fluke - concert neck with rosewood fretboard and pickup (does almost $500 seem a bit steep for a plastic ukulele?). That is subject to change when my Pono MB arrives in the next week or so and I get to play a quality solid-wood ukulele...

Hmm,

I guess my dream uke is whatever I'm planning on buying next. I'm currently dreaming of a Stuart Longridge solid Yew Soprano and a Tinguitar Spruce top/cherry body baritone. I have a waiting time of end of Nov and end of Feb respectively and the wait is agonising. I am now having some rather unfaithful dreams about a Kamaka baritone 8 string that is so far out of my price range it will never be realised.

I also have proper dreams of being a master Luthier rather than someone with all the woodworking skills of Mr Bean wearing boxing gloves. Sadly I wake up.

I am pretty sure Nan(i think that is his name) from thailand got it>>it went pretty fast..

And at that price, I don't think Casey Kamaka is going to be making another humu-humu so that it stays unique.

Okay, then I'll dream about a Kamaka like that with Moorish Idols swimming up the neck. After the humu-humu, they are my next favourite fish to see when I go snorkeling in Hawaii.

If I liked Dolphins (the uke kind) I could really go for that! Since I don't I'm willing to be convinced. :D Ohana, or Clearwater, has a plastic back concert uke like that with solid spruce top. Not to enable you or anything, but perhaps minus the tenor sound and soprano tension, you just might like it!

Well, here's your dream, then (auction has ended so you'll have to scroll down to see it). Based on the final sale price of this, I can only guess that at least two bidders didn't look at ALL the pictures... I noticed the background showing through on the first picture and figured it had to be bad. Then I saw the last picture and realized that whoever plans on restoring that is basically going to have to build a uke and glue the top on it... :)

Nazfest: The annual event in Nazreth, Pa. thrown by Martin Guitars and The Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum in early August. Includes a joint UMGF-Martin Owners Club event at the factory on Friday and Martins On Main Street in downtown Nazareth on Saturday.

At this year's Nazfest, Stan Werbin (owner of Elderly Instruments) carried a soprano case around with him all weekend. Inside was the most amazing copy of a vintage Martin Koa style 2 I have ever seen, made by a luthier in California. The construction was absolutely flawless and the tone was arguably the finest I have ever heard. Sadly, the builder is currently spending a few years remodeling his house rather than making ukes and Stan doesn't expect that to change (in spite of Stan's offer to buy every instrument he can build).

That particular uke is my dream uke.

As Stan said when he showed it to Fred Greene, Vice President/General Manager of Guitars at Martin, "This is the soprano that Martin SHOULD be making in Nazareth."

1. aNueNue Harp Ukulele
2. Kanile'a Tenor Tatoo

Not absolutely sure about the Kanile'a, if I hopefully travel to Hawaii 2014 I'll probably fall in love with another one, but until then, I have everything I want. :)

Maybe some day one of the K brands lists ukuleles with sideports (side sound ports). The best ukulele I could imagine right now is a Kanile'a Tenor with a side port. Since I play mostly at home for my own and/or my fiancée, I guess, THAT would be my dream ukulele.

I believe the luthier is Tim Laughlin. I corresponded with him a bit and he told me he would be out of the ukulele business while he remodels his house. By all reports, he makes the most accurate copies of vintage Martins. He even replicates the old Grover tuners. They sound great as well.
