View Full Version : Artists you hate to love??

Some friends, and I were discussing this topic over too many adult beverages the other night. Everyone has an artist or song that they totally love, but would be mortified if anyone knew. So heres your chance to come clean folks. What song, or artist do you cover on your uke alone that you would never ever admit to anyone else you loved??
And no, no one is promising not to make fun of you (in a good natured way of course )

Hmm...
People may obviously have their own opinion, but I am and always will be a huge fan of John Denver!

I wouldn't even know where to start. I am the guy that likes all those groups everyone makes fun of. Including, but not limited to, Abba, Culture Club, and even The Captain and Tennille as well as Barry Manilow.

I Think JD was a huge talent. My wife hates him, but that is more to do with her sisters complete and total obsession, than anything.

This could be great fun!

Ok, I love Hanson's 'Mmm Bop'. The only reason I don't cover it is that Monique and the girls totally owned it and I can't follow that!

I also love ONE very specific performance of 'I'm Yours' by Mraz and Toca.

Wait why is there no video cover of "Charles in Charge" yet? Need. Now.

It's such a great song, you don't even realize it's creepy. "Charles in charge of our days and our nights. Charles in charge of our wrongs and our rights." What kind of tyrannical control does this man exercise over these people??

Holy crap. Not only did he learn and record that theme tune in one hour, but during that same time Jon hand wrote and emailed me a .pdf file tabs for My My Hey Hey by Neil Young.

aaargggh! There goes today as well. :)

Debatable whether it beats "Our God is a Great Big God" (which my daughter came home from school singing last week) for the current title of "Most Annoying Earworm".

Actually, I have a confession that would seriously destroy any remaining crdibility I have round these parts and that is a hankerining to play Take That's
"Patience" which is so not me. It's the harmonies, honest.

the singer looks as if Sting, and the dude from Simply Red had a weird overall wearing love child.......walk away as slow as you like, we all saw you drop it...:)

He does indeed ;) How glad I am that I somehow managed to miss the 80s.

My guilty pleasure? Probably early Donovan. No Dylan freak is ever supposed to admit to liking the Scottish clone's output.

Nah, Donovan grew out of the Dylan wannabe phase pretty early. And Bob owes at least as much to earlier sources as Donovan does to Bob, and just as blatantly.

Therefore, IMO, Donovan is very debatable as a guilty pleasure. I dare you to come up with something more embarrassing. :D

I think you could play some Floyd Cramer on uke...lot's of hammer-ons...

Hey, Karen Carpenter had a fantastic voice...too many sappy songs, but what vocal chops...

Er... I did say "early" Donovan ;). Does a fondness for Prog Rock count as a guilty pleasure - Moody Blues; Genesis; Premiata Forneria Marconi; etc?

Or how about a liking for 50s Classic Country like Little Jimmy Dickens or Ernest Tubb (especially their wonderfully sentimental stuff)?

Plainsong
10-21-2012, 10:40 AM
I don't think Prog Rock is so bad at all. I'll admit to (classic) Duran Duran. No alt-loving grunge chic should admit to going to The Reflex. There is (was) a Finnish band called Ultra Bra that I loved to bits, and in this household, that is NOT cool.

I'm going to have to steer clear of this thread from now on. Every time someone posts something that I do think qualifies as a guilty pleasure, and which justifies a little embarrassment, I find myself thinking, actually I kind of like that myself.

Doh.

There's nothing wrong with liking Kate Nash! She's great and really funny as well. Have a look at the official video.

Me I'm a sucker for Eurovision songs. Not really a secret though, but many of my friends like to make fun of me for that. GO SWEDEN! 12 POINTS!
