View Full Version : 36th Season of the Ukulele: Season of the Damned - Halloween Week

Ghostly Ghastly and Gruesome Halloween Week

I've been hanging on to this idea for months, and I know it's kind of redundant given peaceweaver's other contest, but we communicated and decided there was room for two in the world of Halloween Songs.

This week's competition will involve Halloween Songs, which may contain the following elements:
ghosts, spectres, phantoms, phantasms, revenants, hauntings, spirits, apparitions, wraithes, spooks, demons, devils, banshees, elves, goblins, hobgoblins, mummies, trolls, werewolves, warlocks, wizards, witches, crones, spells, magic, brooms, death, dismemberment, cauldrons, black cats, fog, spiders, bats, groans, creaks, thumps-in-the-night, curses, bad luck, the number 13, tombs, graves, candy, costumes, gravestones, graveyards, bones, skulls, trick-or-treat, skeletons, corpses, vampires, zombies, human sacrifice, hocus-pocus, voodoo, bloodcurdling screams, mad scientists, potions, blobs, aliens, pumpkins, and any other spooky, creepy frightening, chilling, macabre, spooky or spine-tingling things you can think of.
The songs do not have to be about Halloween, but should contain elements appropriate to the holiday; see list above.

Covers and originals are accepted. Your first video will be your entry unless you specify otherwise. Bonus Tracks will be added to the cauldron with glee.

Ukulele front and center, other instruments OK in a supporting role.

Say the Magic Words "36th Season" or "Season of the Damned" or "Halloween Week", or similar at the beginning of your vid

Post a video and provide a link on this thread so we can all cringe in terror and tremble in fright

Single take live recording, no multitrack for the audio, but I think we can accept some minor video cutaways if anyone feels inspired to shoot something scary.

I request that if you post a separate thread on UU to your video that you also provide a link to this page so people can check out the contest.

I will select a winner, my 6 year old daughter will (hopefully) select a winner, and another will be decided by random voodoo/santeria incantation selection process. The selection process for the first two will be subjective and in direct proportion to the scariness, campiness, song selection, and performance quality

Costume will count in your favor.

Deadline, DEAD-line is Sunday Oct 28 at 1159PM Hawaii time.

I really want to see some songs by The Cramps (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cramps) entered in the contest. (hello, TCK!) - But they must fit the theme, of course.

For those of you who are outside of the USA, I understand that Halloween is a largely American phenomenon. However, every culture has scary/creepy/ghostly traditions and stories..that's what we're looking for here.(hello, Tootler)

Prizes: I am going to keep it simple with the prizes this time, maybe a still-beating human heart for one winner, and a mojo bag (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mojo_%28African_American_culture%29) for each of the runners-up?
Or maybe some itunes gift cards instead.. $20 for each winner?

I'll try to stay on top of the playlists at least once a day, but it's going to be a busy week..

Bwaaah ha ha ha ha ha ha

Also posted in an earlier season so another bonus track.

I am sure I can come up with something suitable for my proper entry. It'll be more a case of deciding which.

BTW, Halloween is actually quite a big thing here in NE England. It was much less so in West Yorkshire where we previously lived and I can remember Halloween being celebrated as a kid, though I think you Americans have taken it to another level.

As I had an idea for a song to do, I just recorded that. I like to play U2 Songs, so I tried to find a song by them that fit this theme, and I think that is this song: Beautiful Ghost.
I did not use as long an intro as the U2 song has, I think that would end up boring ;-).
This song is a Joshua Tree outtake. The lyrics are the words of a poem written by William Blake - "Hear the Voice of the Bard".
Anybody Interested in the Original see here:

This is great. I have a song in mind, which is really pushing the limit for me, and is going to take me all week to practice. Someone is certain to choose the song as well, and do a much better job, but I am choosing not to care because I will still be able to practice this song, which I like a lot, and it will really push me as a beginning player.

Here's another I did earlier (UK members will appreciate that line :D )

Cruel Ship's Carpenter is a murder ballad which has been collected on both sides of the Atlantic. A man murders his lover. The lover's ghost comes back to exact retribution.

This particular version was collected by Cecil Sharp in North Carolina. I like the minor mode melody which suits the tone of the song. I have added a drone to the accompaniment which I think adds to the overall effect.

All in all, a cheerful ditty

Rook, thanks for the request, but does that song have Halloweenesque elements? I think it might be better for innuendo week. I was thinking something more like Zombie Dance (http://youtu.be/k0a6KHD_gwQ) perhaps

LYRICS
Bright Shone the Moon

She saddled the grey horse and patted the bay,
** Bright shone the moon over valley and tor,
Though her true love had warned her to keep well away,
*** Full shone the moon on all hallows’ e’en.

When she left behind the wide open plain, **
She set off at a trot down the shadowy lane. ***

When she arrived at the edge of the copse, **
She saw a white owl alight in the tree tops. ***

“Go back, go back!” cried the hoot of the owl, **
She was deep in the wood when she heard the first howl. ***

Eyes white with terror her mount it sped on, **
Till the very last breath in its body was gone. ***

Alone, all alone, she stood her ground. **
But the forest was silent, except for one sound. ***

At dawn her true love held her in his embrace,
Long gone that moon over valley and tor.
His bloody red fingers stroking her pale face.
And the sun it shone bright on all hallows.

The effect of this to me was of background music to an old 405 line TV drama. Very effective and cleverly done.

heres an old one i did for Ukisociety's contest a while back

i was amazed to see how fast it originally was, when i do it live now it is much slower

Good song. Well done.

here's one i did a while back...still looking for a new entry!

Dave, you always come up trumps. Loved the effect on this.

Ok, so I was trying to look as ghosty as possible, and hack my way through this song, like hacking my way through the jungle with a butter knife, anyway, here it is, by The White Stripes, one of my favorites, "Little Ghost."

The faded ghost look was very effective.

OK here it is : Ghost Riders in the Sky
Notice the Orange Halloween Cow prop and Western Shirt.
Double duty song also a tribute to my dad
George Long and the 101 Ranch Boys.

It's many years since I heard this song. Well sung.

Bob Dylan song but it has been done by Nick, Kylie, Shane, Blixa and Mick (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ao0lyPjYQw0)
so it should be dark enough for you... or at least a little bit provocative.

The usual WGY production values and an excellent song to boot.

Here is my contribution this week. An original song I wrote a few years back on my Steel Strung Baritone Ukulele.

What a good song! To me it somehow captures the feel of Dartmoor. That kind of eerieness somehow suits the South West better than my part of the country.

Uh-Oh, more videos since I was here last...

Here's a simple one I've wanted to figure out for a while. Funny how even hosting a season can motivate you to learn songs..
Teenage Werewolf by The Cramps (http://youtu.be/HrbTkNwbUz8) They played the Peppermint Lounge in NYC every Halloween for a while..

I'm not familiar with the Cramps but I liked the way you did this one.

Great fun Krabbers.

I wonder what a Wolf-man's blues would really be about:

Don't think being a werewolf's easy,
I hate all this howling at the moon (x2)
And going round sniffing asses,
Makes me feel such a buffoon!

I hate waking up naked,
In the middle of the wood (x2)
And those cops sure get suspicious,
When you're covered all in blood.

It's a painful transformation,
That we were-folk undergo (x2)
But not as embarrassing as my cousin,
Who they put in a dog show!

U2 - Beautiful Ghost (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rt4PQGWUDFE)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSSik3TooAM
By the way really not a costume person ;-).

Nicely played - I've been experimenting with plugging in the ukulele myself lately and the tone you've got sounds great for this tune..... not a song I'd heard before, but you can't go wrong for this theme with a lyric by William Blake.....

Caleb Meyer by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. Sorry peewee but this song is not suitable for children. I'll probably post another later in the week so this may end up being just a bonus.

Brilliant choice, Myrna - the opening cut off of the finest record ever made! (seriously - it's my favorite album....) You do a great job with it.... you really capture the dark weirdness of the story and your vocals are gorgeous, as always.... loved it!

great choice of tunes, Dave - Vic Chesnutt was from just down the road in Athens and his records had a huge impact on me as a teenager - one of the writers who turned me on to the idea that you could mix genres freely and make real art out of folk music. This must be one of his later tunes, not one I'm familiar with, but it's a great song. Love your take on it and the video is great.... good stuff...

If you've got a silver bullet
Keep that sucker in your belt
'cause if pull it out of there
it's the last thing you'll have felt

So don't come to hunt my family
In this pet store of the night
When your arm is gone you'll feel sore
but not terribly bright.

The night is made for howling
and for prowling and for blood
and the last thing hunters hear
is when their head falls with a thud.

Great fun Krabbers.

It is a totally weird song it comes from the LP Down in the Groove,

This song is one of about 300 ballads collected by Harvard Professor, Francis Child in the late nineteenth century, no. 10 in the list in fact.

The song tells of the murder of a young woman by her sister and the basic story is found all over Europe. It exists in a large number of variants and versions have also been collected in North America.

To me, these ballads are the folk song equivalent of Shakespeare's tragedies as the main protagonists generally don't come out of it very well.

The Lyke Wake Dirge is thought to be the oldest English Vernacular song. It is in North Yorkshire dialect and describes the journey of the soul after death. Although the imagery is Christian, there are echoes of pre-Christian belief in the song.

It is very appropriate for this week as Halloween means "All Hallows Eve" or "All Souls Eve".

Berni wrote this in a note to Krabbers, I added the last few verses and tried a couple of different tunes. Whatever is good here is his. Please don't blame him for the rest.

This makes me feel like a self congratulatory 3rd grade teacher: "It's so nice that you have worked together on your beautiful project"! No, really, creativity blossoms in the dank cobwebbed halls of Season 36. Kind of a Solomon Burke as wolf-man vibe. That was your official entry, right?

I have always thought that the scariest songs are the ones that really show the depths of the depravity that our species is capable of.
This is one of those.
Losing the popularity contest again I am sure...Oh well-
Man do I make some funny faces when I am strumming away- I need to work on that.
That and the fact that this is video 100 and I ain't gotten any better.
#1 was a Decemberists tune, as is this one- enjoy

Leave it to you to spoil everything with a positive outlook, a gem of a song and playing that sounds like it belongs on Folkways instead of YT. Oh and that cheerful Aussie bird going toowheeet tooowheet. I'm putting some zombies on the plane to Hobart with a map to your house...

This is my entry for the 36th Season. It's an original song and has also been entered in the other Halloween contest. Oops, I just noticed that I forgot to mention the 36th Season in the video but, it is written at the beginning of the video. Will it still count?

Just some comments on recent postings:

Uke4ia - you really make that dead bicho rock! Great song - never heard of Aimee Mann.

Decaturcomp - Oh yes! This second draft of the melody is far more original that the 1st attempt. You deserve the "Barbablanca" title - I shaved my beard off some time back - but if I grew one again it'd be white ;) - I love the long-distance collaboration angle!

Garydavkra - "Freak out man!" - You suit the wig! Great catchy original - I'm sworn off Candy this week though - major tooth ache they can't fix because I left it too long and got a gum infection :-( Shot full of antibiotics right now :-(

29Mooons - Wow, you looked just like the Star Wars Emperor - which made the falsetto even more impressive :-) I too used to be a big RHPS fan. Nice acoustic take!

Garydov: FREE CANDY! You've captured the REAL spirit of Halloween! Since I have none of my own, I wonder if I can rent low-cost children for next Wednesday?

29moons: Reading obituaries. Gruesome. Anyone ever tell you that you sound just like David Byrne? Forbidden Planet: Best SF movie ever.

Silly Dave: Botox, my friend. Your song was the essence of fun!

Nongdam: After listening to your tune, I feel all tense and scared. Frightened. I'm thinking that was your goal. Great job!

Ukeval: I have a black cat. She's staying indoors next Wednesday night. Very well done song. In a word: Pretty.

Tootler: I didn't know Yorkshire had its own dialect. An accent, sure, so not only did I enjoy your dirge tremendously, I also learned something!

Uke4ia: C'mon.. Your uke can't REALLY be made from a dead armadillo. My mother is an artist who makes non-lethal animal trophies. I was reminded of a great summer when I was 13 and we had a deal armadillo in the garage deep freezer which my mom was using as a model. Awesome thing to impress your friends with. Your bonus songs were wonderful as well.

Glass: That was a very spirited song. It got me tapping my feet and bobbing my head, and that, above all, is the measure of good music.

We Tigers: Loved the way you rocked that soprano. Awesome

Thanks so much! I also very much like Forbidden Planet. Anne Francis is absolutely gorgeous and so cute. Leslie Nielsen is so serious compared to what we all remember him as in his later career. Robbie the Robot was so cool and Earl Holliman as the cook, who would later be known as Lt. Bill Crowley on Police Woman.

I'll have to watch "True Stories" to see what David Byrne sounds like. But I do love the Talking Heads.

This is my first entry into one of the Seasons. I've had this Richard Thompson song running through my head on and off for a month or so, for some reason. I'd never thought about trying to adapt it to ukulele (it has a lot more menace on acoustic guitar, especially the way R.T. plays it). But today I decided to give it a go, and I thought it might be a cool song for this contest. It's not the usual "Ghosts, Zombies, Vampires" sort of Halloween fare. Bone collectors, like rag pickers, were basically a sub-category of garbage men in Victorian England (and, I suppose, earlier and elsewhere too). This song is about one who sort of forgot to differentiate between bones leftover from dinner and bones that ought to be treated, well, more reverentially.

I'm afraid Father Time is tightening the noose and this week will be dead and buried before I get a chance to enter. There are so many songs I've been trying to work on yet nothing is quite working; The Blob by The Five Blobs, Night Prowler by AC/DC, Sympathy For The Devil, Bat Out Of Hell, Zombie Zoo by Tom Petty, Some Kinda Hate by The Misfits and a few songs I just discovered by the Groovie Ghoolies. It's doubtful I'll get an opportunity to get anything down. Pity. Such a fun week!

This is great. I have a song in mind, which is really pushing the limit for me, and is going to take me all week to practice. Old Irish song about the dead and the dying... a break all the rules bonus.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCYgXIG1gPE

The days of thy Sire are all vanished and over
The fierce tide of fight never more shall they stem
O'er the fields where they fell their sad spirts still hover
'Tis time the last chieftain was gathered to them

For in their gray palace the long grass is waving
Their clan to the stranger has bended the knee
and a wild wail is heard when the night winds are raving
McCarthy, McCarthy I tarry for thee.

Your proud star of honour is dwindling and waning
The land of your fathers has ceased to be free
and the air thrills at night with their spirits complaining
Your hours are now numbered, I tarry for thee

Weep not for the earth! with a smile you should rather
Haste on to the clime of the valiant and free
The last heir of your race, the lone tomb of your father
Forever is closed, when it closes o'er thee.

The shadows of evening fall deeper and deeper
the mist from the lake rises over the lea
But that mist ere it fades from the eyes of the sleeper,
McCarthy, McCarthy, you'll be with me

Farewell to the mountains farewell to the river
Farewell to the sun you shall never more see
O'er the far western ocean a star sets forever
McCarthy McCarthy, I tarry for thee.

Sorry about that, Chris. I posted this on the other Halloween contest thread Friday. But I haven't had any feedback on it, so that's why I posted it here, too.

Thompson was on the original version of this song as the lead guitarist, but not the singer. John French, Fred Frith, Henry Kaiser, and Richard Thompson did two albums together as French Frith Kaiser Thompson. This song was on the "Invisible Means" album, which was very good. French co-wrote and sang the song. This album indirectly led to my 20-year love of Madagascar music. It was how I first heard of Kaiser, which got me to buy the album when he did his "A World Out of Time" albums with David Lindley and many Madagascar musicians.

I've only heard bits of the FFK&T albums, but I certainly know OF them. I saw Richard Thompson play this live on a solo tour in '93, and finally got a recording of him doing it on "The Life and Music of Richard Thompson" boxed set. I had actually forgotten about it until the other day after I posted "Sam Jones" and FiL mentioned it in a comment on my Youtube channel. I actually hadn't tried singing it until about 20 minutes before I shot this, but I worked out the music pretty quickly on Friday.
Too bad we don't live closer together... it would be fun to work out the entire "Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" as a uke duet... Ha!

Wow! Spooky entries! Love it! Here's my one-take entry today (I was scared of having candles lit for too long as I'm very clumsy so I did this one quickly... did I mention I spilled black coffee during my take of last week's contest on my stompbox and splashed some on my Pono and Mainland ukes? :( ) Anyway, have a good week everyone and stay safe to my fellow North-easterners!

Once again cutting it very fine. Just spent absolutely ages trying (and failing) to perfect this song with my mate Matt, whom I roped in to playing his melodica with me for this week's season. We break down towards the end but I was really struggling with this one, it's a tough one to play. Anyway, enjoy!

No fancy costumes or make-up (though I would have loved to put something special together). Great week Peewee! Here's a quick one. Zombie Crush by Groovie Ghoulies.

This is one I made for peaceweaver3's contest. I'll post it here as a bonus tune if you're willing to accept it. John French co-wrote this with his wife, and sang it on a French Frith Kaiser Thompson album. Richard Thompson later did it on one of his tours.

Here's my bonus submission... DAMMIT! I just finished uploading this only to discover that uke4ia beat me to it! Gah! Well, he and I seem to have very similar tastes in music anyway. Since it's not my OFFICIAL submission, I suppose there's room for more than one. And a big thank you to FiL for giving me the idea to try this one.

I am so incredibly happy to hear not one but two versions of "Now That I am Dead"! Well done, gentlemen!

Hi All,

Uhh the season deadline passed..I am a terrible host, I'm sprawled on the couch eating dip and opening the last beer while you desperately wonder why you weren't introduced to anyone at the party.

Once I've viewed everything, I think I'll make a playlist for the Junior Judge, omitting some of the more graphic songs, and we'll get to work. Perhaps those that are omitted from the Junior stack will get an extra ticket in the voodoo lottery award.

So the Season Of The Damned is closed, the playlists are complete. I am about 110 minutes behind in viewing all the entries, but it all looks fantastic, thanks so much for an excellent showing.

When the Corporate Zombies release me, I will return to my life of indolence, UU and ukulele. Thanks for running the show in my absence. Winners TBA soon!

PS< Please check that your entry (or entries) made the correct playlist.

I have risen from my grave, victim of soul robbing corporate clients no more! Well actually moving on to a new batch as of yesterday. So sorry for the delay. Don't have the time to make a video, too knackered!
But after arguing with my ISP and phone co for a week to get my connection speed back, I did find time to listen to all the entries a couple of times, once face to the screen, and another while cooking an elaborate dinner (eye of newt, etc).
What an amazing batch of songs, so much fun. You people are pretty amazing.
So there are three prizes, $20 itunes gift certs. One decided by me, one by my daughter, and one by the fickle hand of fate..

There were so many great ones, even original tunes. But I got my pick narrowed down to four, and I had to let it simmer for a few days..
Jon/Eugene's Ain't no Grave was so inspirational and beautiful, Ralf's Vampire Girls rendition and especially his drag gypsy witch outfit were outstanding, Joko's Michael Jackson was a masterpiece, kind of...but the standout was a tune that I love so much I that stole the 12" from a girlfriend back in '82 and have it still. That version of Ghost Town (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-9uJgbzLrU&feature=share&list=PLkLyl_FBRtMjXZYo-xZWaUdKyvDJeM5nY) was fantastic, spot on rhythm and melodica, and max2173, you are my pick for winner. Oy!

As for my daughter, she was very excited to watch videos, as she doesn't get much "screen time" at all. In the interest of not turning her into a zombie, I did edit the entries down to about 15 I thought would appeal to her most. There were several she liked, but once she chose her winner, there was no wavering. The combination of "pretty singing", "bright colored paintings" and a sure-fire cowboy tune was all it took 000Kanaka000's Ghost Riders In the Sky (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4gndWyRml0&feature=share&list=PLkLyl_FBRtMjXZYo-xZWaUdKyvDJeM5nY) is the one for her. Horse related lyrics content and professional delivery.

And now for the random act of spookiness. I've made a numbered list of all the official entries, minus the two above, and one that got deleted. There are thirty five in all. Using the random number sequence generator here: http://www.random.org/sequences/ I will make a randomized sequence and choose the 31st in the list..
here goes..(drumroll)
and the result is #27, which is..the spooky uker of Essex...Ukuleledaveey and Little Red Riding Hood (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOf5czQbNZk&feature=share&list=PLkLyl_FBRtMjXZYo-xZWaUdKyvDJeM5nY)!!

Winners: send me an email address, and I'll send you an itunes Cert, unless you are anti itunes, and have a simple alternative suggestion.

I feel bad for all the great tunes I can't reward, but I guess that's the curse of the host. I want to thank each of you for participating, for running the show in my almost-absence, and for putting together such a great Halloween playlist.
I think I commented on everything, either here or on YT, if not, I apologize for the oversight.

Bwahahahahahah!

Thanks again for your patience

even the breakdown at the end was good.

Might have known a horse song would be a big pull with your girl...
ponies are always winners with girls, and those yip-IO-Kaiyo's made it. Well done.

Dave my man, what can I say. Looks like you have inherited my good luck crown...
wear it well. Oh!!! and if given the choice of Arsenal winning the league or you winning
all the seasons from now until christmas... what would you choose?

:biglaugh: Well Rob the 20 year old version of me would of said Arsenal everytime, but the cynical ,world, corporate abused, beaten up, ukulele obsessed 41 year old me would say The Seasons all the way, them blody footballers earn to much money, and the game has changed so much in the last 20 odd years, im not sure if it is a good thing or not.

I shall cherish your crown of good luck, but i think it shall sit on my noggin for only a week until it is passed on, but i am really really happy to have one win under my belt it feels so great, now to get this weeks entry in :)
