Hey there,

I gonna order a Kanile'a Tatoo Tenor (my first and only Koa Beauty), the question ist just, which one of those two. ;)

Number 1:
http://s14.directupload.net/images/121026/osaxz5vw.jpeg

Number 2:
http://s1.directupload.net/images/121026/b55i37f6.jpeg

Which one would YOU chose and for which reason?

I have no possibility to hear those two or see them live, I have to make my descission based on the two pictures provided. Is there basically a sound different between light and dark Koa?

Thanks for your opinions!!
Linho

Edit: Just to let you know, I chose No. 1!

I don't know about sound differences, but I like the triangular part in the grain.

Definitely number 2! I like the wood colour better and the triangle pattern on the back, plus it has a better contrast with the etching. Both are gorgeous though :)

I don't know about sound differences, but I dislike the triangular part in the grain. It looks like my plumber's backside when he's under my sink.

Another vote for #2. Like the color and the grain pattern better.

On second look, I liked #1 better! What a difficult choice you have to make. Go with the one that sounds the best to you.

#2 because I too like the grain pattern. It is a tough decision and a very close call. Looks like most people agree that #2 is the one.

P.S. Good luck and congratulations! I like the design, I think you will be happy with either one. Is it solid wood or laminate?

Thanks, I think so too. But it's a hard descission. On the one hand I like the lighter color of No. 2 better, but the triangle looks a bit dirty for me. Don't know...

Sure it's all solid Koa. The Tatoo Tenor is basically the regular T1 with satin finish with engraved tribal pattern. :)

#2 no doubt im a sucker for grain!!!! But if you can play them first sound should be the overal deciding factor

OK HOLD ON A SEC..... AFTER CLOSER INSPECTION ILL GO FOR #1. LMAO. BOTH VERY PRETTY WOODS ON THESE. THE WOOD STRIPES ON THE BACK AND UNDER THE BRIDGE ARE VERY NICE. ... ITS A TOSSUP. FLIP A COIN.

Nice ukes! I'm going with #1 because that dark grain looks great with the tattoo. Plus, to me the stripes look better than the triangle.

I think both are beautiful, but if I had to pick one, it would be... #1

I don't like that the plumber's butt thing is on the front/topwood, as well as the back.

If it was just the backside--like it is on, well, my plumber--it might be tolerable.

I like number 2. I like the lighter wood because, there is more contrast between it and the design. In other words, the design stands out more and I tend to gravitate towards lighter woods in general.

#2 for me. Like the variation in the grain. Don't see the plumbers butt, maybe cause I don't really pay attention when the plumber's under the sink but maybe it depends on the plumber. Aren't you glad you asked this question? How royally confused are you now?

Number 2 really looks hawaiian koa. The number one looks so dark like mahogany. I prefer the number 2 100%!

I prefer number 1 because (a) I like darker wood; (b) I prefer straight grain to angled grain (and now I can't get that plumber's backside image out of my head!), and (c) I prefer the subtlety of the contrast between the tattoo and the wood color. But that's just my own preference. I know lots of people who love lighter wood, angled grain and/or lots of contrast. Fortunately, they're both beautiful. As others have suggested, if you can't decide on the basis of looks, or if you could live with either one, try to pick one on the basis of sound. Different ukes from the same builder usually have subtle differences in sound, tone or resonance. Please let us know which one you pick, and congratulations in advance.

16 to 16. Tie.

I just Presse the BUY Button. In the comments field I asked for the...

Number 1!

Even if I like the lighter Koa more, I liked the straight lines more than the imho "dirty" looking triagle.

I voted, now its 17 to 16. Choice is Made, cant wait for the Beauty! ;)

Tank you all! :)

Number 2, I think the design looks nicer on the lighter wood.

I like the richer color of number one.

But, I do not care for laser etching, which is computer based. If it were up to me, inlay work>laser etching...handmade>computer made... Hawaiian made>non Hawaiian made...but Hawaiian designed are pretty great...see Pono, and Islander! I am a traditionalist...for eye candy curly>straight...kou>koa...I would like to see more necks being made out of koa...I know expensive...but I am a purist!

But you are buying it not me...so up to you!

Isn't that more about weight than cost?

Anyway, good choice Linho.

mahogany is not that light... I believe there was a thread somewhere from Andrew of HMS where he said that he thought the only CNC machine was owned by Kamaka in town, and that many get those pre-cut elsewhere(not in Hawaii) to standardize the necks. Solid Koa is very expensive and I would be willing to bet that the cost of a solid koa neck>solid mahogany etc. You may be right about the same size neck with the same finish side by side in a weight comparison, but I am thinking that is not as big of a deal as the price for a solid piece of koa.

Sometimes finding something with search isn't so easy, so I don't know if this can be found, but someone from Koaloha (may have been Paul, can't remember) said they have a machine but still finish off the necks by hand, to get them just so, that a machine couldn't get it 100%. It was in a discussion about necks in general.

As for the pics, the images are deleted, so tough to vote, just to say I dig mine. :)

Edit to catchup: Congrats on your purchase, wish I knew which one it was! As for the tattoo model, if that was one of them, I'd prefer traditional flash over the tribal pattern.
