Hey all!

37th Season of the Uke time! This week we're being sponsored by the amazing UKEEKU.COM (http://ukeeku.com/), so please go check out the website and leave a comment saying that the Seasons of the Uke sent you.

Here's your video of rules!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2PLyHePtBE

Written explanation for those who can't watch the video/would prefer to read:

This week is all about the UKE BEATZ, percussion on the uke that you work into your playing. Everyone has seen those videos on Youtube with guitar players doing super cool percussion on the body of their instruments--in my opinion, not enough people do this on the uke. So this week, you can play whatever song you choose (no theme, no genre) but you must add some sort of drumming on the uke itself. Hooray!

Yes, chunking and string muting count. But let's branch out a bit--they can't be the only forms of percussion you use.

Do's and Don'ts:

Do:
--Drum on your uke. It's totally up to you how you do this. You can drum throughout the song or just do a solo, or just do it at the beginning or end--totally up to you! If you're worried about breaking your uke, a) be careful, b) use your beater/plastic uke, c) be creative (i.e., hang something off the headstock that is hittable, clip something to the soundhole, figure it out.
--Make a new video.
--Mention that your video is for the 37th Season of the Uke.
--Link back to the contest thread if you post your video elsewhere.
--Know that your official entry is your first one unless you say otherwise.
--Feature the uke in a starring role.
--Covers and originals, both are fine.
--Be creative.
--Have fun!

Don't
--Multitrack. As much as I love it, it defeats the purpose a little bit.
--Cheat (if you're a duo) by having one person play the uke, and one person play the percussion. Whoever is playing uke must also play percussion.
--Break your uke.
--Blame me if you do.

Deadline is Sunday, as always.

Judges are myself and Tim of ukeeku.com. Thanks to my poor math skills, scores will be entirely arbitrary--just make our jaws drop the farthest, and you will win!

1st Prize: Ohana CKP-70 Vita uke. Check it out here! http://ukeeku.com/2012/01/08/ohana-ckp-70-vita-uke-full-review/
2nd and 3rd Prize: Envelopes O Crap.

Go knock 'em dead!

Amendment 1: Loop pedals and multi-tracking are okay on bonus entries only

Amendment 2: Rhythm rings and other things along those lines are fine, but, like chunking and string-muting, they can't be the only form of percussion you include.

Are looping pedals allowed?

hmmmm...I'm going to have to say no to the loop pedal on the official entry, only because the goal is to try and work the percussion into your uke playing.

But since I'm really really curious...looping pedals are a-okay on bonus entries. As is multi-tracking.

Is that an okay compromise?

Here is a traditional West Indian /Caribbean folk song, probably carried over from sailing shanties of the time. I tried to work actual notes into it, but I just couldn't get it to work well, so it's pretty much all percussion.

I put 1/4 cup or so of rice into the uke to get a shaky-shaky sound out of it too. :)

Way to hammer that uke! Up till now everyone has seemed to be a little tentative. I know I would be. If I had an old uke to bang on, I'd give it a try but, all of my ukes are fairly new so I may have to think of something else. Great job!

Definitely cool - I don't see why it wouldn't qualify - you were playing the uke and doing percussion on the uke, right?

I've seen James Hill do something similar with chopsticks, only I think he was actually putting one of the sticks under the strings.

Looks like hitting the strings with a stick might be quite popular. Great U2 song.

Pure percussion accompaniment - very effective and I like a good shanty.

I've gone for an instrumental - sort of as I sang the tune through a kazoo and hit the strings of the uke for accompaniment second time through the tune. Like an earlier entry, strikes against the body are accidental, but fit in quite well and added to the overall effect.

The tune is a Scots slow air called "The Arran Boat". The title refers to the Isle of Arran in the Clyde estuary in Scotland, not to the Isle of Aran off the West Coast of Ireland (Note different spelling). It brings back memories for me of a great walking weekend in Arran in the late 1960s when I came back to the mainland on the last paddle steamer to ply the Clyde estuary. Happy days!

Many thanks. Yes they do add something. Very useful for adding a rhythmic effect to a song. They are not expensive. Mine cost me 5GB. I reckon they would be about the same in dollars as they are made in the US, so are imported here which adds to the price.

John
James did that indeed, I tried to do this myself but I have no bridge that is as low as his I guess because he slides the chopstick really close to the bridge. Also I think his uke was designed to do the percussive stuff, I checked all my ukes (I have 5) an only my Tenor has any kind of a drumsound in it, and even that is overpowered by the sound of the strings when you play them. That's why I went for beating the strings, which is much harder then I thought when I started it, after take 9 (I made some errors) I was getting some problems hitting it in the right rhythm.

By the way as John says I also don't see why it wouldn't qualify.

The small body of the uke means they don't resonate when tapped as much as a guitar body which is probably why you don't see it done as much as with guitars. I tried it with a song some time ago, putting in a couple of percussive taps on the body before starting a verse and it didn't come up all that well. All my ukes are soprano except for one concert and the best result I had was with my Flea which has a deeper body than most and so resonates more.

I went for tapping the strings - tuned percussion. After all instruments like the xylophone and glockenspiel are considered percussion instruments so why not? Even so, I put it through my Marshall Micro amp to get a bit more volume.

I wonder if James Hill has a mic in the body of the uke as his really sounds when he taps the body?

Believe it or not, I wrote it myself, and originally played it in a blues/jazz/R&B band I had about ten years ago. Yes, I believe I took it down from YT a while back. I do that sometimes, just to clean up the channel somewhat. I have this strange idea that I should never have more than 100 videos up there...now I'm getting close again...

Please enjoy my submission for the 37th season of the ukulele. It’s a tropical…err… I mean… topical song about the events of this week. I’ll be the first to admit, it’s kinda rough, particularly starting about half-way through, but it only took me three takes! This percussive stuff is hard! My fingers hurt!

One thing I did learn though about the ukulele in making this vid is that the body-thumping I managed sporadically throughout the song must be transmitted by the sound hole of the uke much more so than the sounds produced by the strings. What I mean is that the thumps and taps sounded a lot louder on the video with the uke pointed towards the camera than they did to my own ears while playing them.

Seasons of the Uke: Entertaining AND educational!

My comments on the recent entries:

Strumsilly: Hand-Jively cool rendition of a classic

DocBekken: Your song had me tappin my feet and scatting along. Now, I just have to clean up all this scat on the floor.

Kanaka: Yours was the best incorporation of the percussive element I've heard tonight. Great job!

Uke4ia: Aww, man, I was so concerned when I saw your song title that the song I chose for this week was taken. Same title, different song! Yours was excellente!

Decatur: Loved your use of the ukulele drum set!

Eugene: Your skills, timing, natural feel and genuine enjoyment of the sweater vest... err.. I mean Ukulele are unparalleled. You have immense talent.

Ipsofacto: Fantastic song choice aside, I really liked how you played your uke like the bongos at parts. Very well done.

Let it be known that Season 37 is when the pros came out to play.

As soon as this season was announced, I thought of you, Craig... So great to see you here, friend. That was great! Those of you who don't know him should check out his you tubes for more amazing golpe. My favorite is Elephants.

I've been working hard on a tune which will bridge the gap between seasons 36 and 37, so I really hope I have time to record it. I've got two shows opening, so I'm at work roughly 12 hrs a day 6 days a week for the next couple of weeks, and time is tight...

Here in post-Sandy central New Jersey, my office doesn't have power this week, so a rare video from home (which, thankfully, does have power). It took a while to find a song and something moderately interesting to do with it. It was certainly a challenge! Here's Bob Dylan's "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry". Makes me think one of us should go for that two handed tapping like Stanley Jordan and others do on the guitar. Beyond my pay grade, I'm afraid.

It's a Fluke. Made by the same company that makes the Flea. The Fluke is a little longer and has a triangular shape. The Flea has a pineapple shape. Both have plastic backs that give them a nice loud sound, and are great for tapping on.

This was SO much harder than I thought it was- and yeah, I can't sing at all while I am trying to drum.
Totally counter intuitive, like that rubbing your tummy and patting your head thing..
This is take 195, and I am DONE.
Oh yeah- I utter some very strong language here (it is part of the song). Please do not play this around kids, or my boss.
Lack of talent means we go for impact :)

I wish more Seasonistas would include the name of the song and the original artist in their posts. TCK, I loved this song and your performance. What is the song, and who did the original?

decaturcomp, 000Kanaka000, Ipsofacto, thanks for the kind words!

Stanley Jordan is way above my pay grade, too.

Nice job with the tappage!!
Like a drummer keeping two beats at once. Schwweet!
Makes me think one of us should go for that two handed tapping like Stanley Jordan and others do on the guitar. Beyond my pay grade, I'm afraid.

I almost didn't get this done because, I ran out of time. I apologies for the orientation but, I had to use my smartphone to record it since my camera battery was too low. It was the first time that I've used my phone to make a video and I didn't know which way to orient it. I would do it over but, I don't have the time now. It's an original song. In a way, it's my song of protest.:D After seeing the kind of shape that some of these instruments are in, it just doesn't make sense. So, I didn't really smack my ukulele very hard. I like to think of them as love taps.

Sorry about that FiL- I pm's, but everyone ought to know that story I figure. The song is called "Shame On You" by The Indigo Girls and is about Chicano Park under the Sand Deigo-Coronado bridge. It was established by a peaceful, but people driven land take over in 1970.It is the largest collection of outdoor Chicano murals, has been fought every step of the way, and is a spectacular example of what folks can do when they put their minds and collective powers together.
Thanks for watching (you to Daddy!) and for the nice comments.

It takes lots of talent to really use the uke as a percussive instrument, which you did a great job vs just adding a beat or two on the 2 & 4.

For a bonus track, this is a video from a couple years ago with some accidental percussion. If you jump to the 4:30 mark, there's a closing instrumental. I'm rapping the soundboard with my knuckle on the downstroke so much that at times it sounds like there's a tabla player accompanying me. I like the effect - I wish I could recapture the effect when I'm trying to do it.

Well, I got a little time at home after all -- so here's the clip I recorded earlier today in my dressing room, between shows. It's rough, but a little imovie and garageband magic help polish it some. So, here it is (again) -- The Rake's Song, by the Decemberists, from their (sort of) rock opera, The Hazards of Love. It's a nice bridge from the Season of the Damned to the Season of the Drums.

Austin1, I didn't say that hitting the uke is stupid. The whole song was pretty much tongue and cheek. In fact, I was going to write a song called "Spanking the Uke" but, I thought that someone would be offended so, I didn't.:p Instead I turned into my song of protest. Someone has to stand up for the ukes of the world. They're such a happy little instrument and spanking them is not a good thing.;)

Anyway, congratulations Krabbers!!!

Thank you Tina - you can give me a hug any time you want, whenever we meet.

I have my wife's permission to be hugged by beautiful women, but they have to be intelligent. You totally fit in those categories.

And Congrats to Everyone!

Tina!!!! I have a confession to make... Your week's video was actually the real me... All my other videos were me wearing my woman costume... Hihihi! Ask "Kevin", Oliver, Colin and Fil :o

Kidding aside, this was really a great week! Thanks for hosting Tina! And Tim for taking part. Krabbers, I want an mp3 of your song cause it's very very beautiful!!!

Congratulations to everyone!

Congratulations Krabbers. Congratulations John. Congratulations everyone for making this so tough on Tina. Great videos everyone. Thanks Tina. I'm honored to place 3rd. I'm accustom to being 3rd to last not 3rd to first . This is new for me. In hind sight I think I should have had a monkey use the thimble and thrown rice at my ukulele. Ah, there's always next time.

Thanks Tina for making this such a fun season.

I just can't imagine and can't believe the time you've spent on that video just to be sure everyone would get a nice word.
That's very kind of you, and a bit insane too. Thank you very Much!
Krabbers your song was really awsome.
Although my first choice was Dr bekken and his so cool "I feel good!"...
