This Irish folk song has enjoyed wide popularity over the years and there has been much discussion over the meaning of the lyrics.

For me, this song is about someone at the end of their life looking back over their life with not a few regrets over what has and hasn't been.

Another time I've learned something about Irish Folk Music! Interesting lyrics, so many cultures describe dying as crossing a river or a sea. I wonder if it's an ancient greek/roman tradition or a viking tradition in Ireland.

Possibly a bit of both. Do you also get it in Germanic folklore?

Water of Tyne that I posted as a bonus in season 38 has the same imagery and that's one from England.
