View Full Version : 39th season of the ukulele......"the ukesterbrown challenege"

thesillydave

So,…the 39th season…this week will harken back to some great ukulele music..
And, specifically, to one of my favorite Uke players and teachers....Mr. (Dave) UkesterBrown!

UkesterBrown was very adamant about making sure that this was my idea… and it was! not just a sneaky way to get people to look at his uke site! I just really like his song choices, and his songsheets have helped me become a sillier dave!

PARAMETERS:
* your song must be from Ukesterbrown’s songsheet
* ukulele front and center, no overdubs...
* state in your clip that the recording is for the "39th season of the ukulele"
* multiple versions of the same song are OK, and encouraged! And inevitable! first post will count as entry unless otherwise stated, the more bonuses the better!
* one take, no overdubs
*For every bonus song, you name goes into the hat for the BONUS prize! A new puppy! ..no, just kidding! A Sparky’s Roadhouse Café T-Shirt!

JUDGING CRITERIA:
points awarded in the following criteria:
* Playing
* Singing
* Overall performance: (camera presence; personality; creative flair; x-factor etc...)

JUDGES: thesillydave, ruth (thesillydave’s wife) and…..Mr. Ukester brown! Yes! The real Ukester!
DEADLINE: 11:59 PM HAWAII TIME, SUNDAY Nov.18TH.

PRIZES:
1ST PLACE: 25.00 gift certificate from UU mechandise!
2ND PLACE: 20.00 Amazon gift card from Mr. UkesterBrown!
3RD PLACE: Snarktuner! And the bonus prize….a collectable, wearable, share-able Tshirt from my silly café!
The song sheets:
http://www.ukesterbrown.com/song-sheets.html
All of his songs have a video of him playing the song if you need to get an idea of how the song “could” be played… BUT…that’s not the point…to play it like he does…play it your way…any which way!
Have fun! Cheers!

nice one Dave. Not sure I have time to record anything this week, but I think I have recorded many of these songs before, so I will throw up a few 'bonuses' maybe. have an awesome week everyone! Ukesterbrown is a fine, fine player and crooner and it's a wonderful website he has up and going for sure. :)

I decided to do "if the devil danced in empty pockets" I don't know the melody for it
so I just sang what I felt went along with the chords... in some places it sounded like
"Bad Leroy brown" I suspect the tempo and the melody is out of whack... but that is what I do.

Sing the melody correctly and you have a cover, sing the melody all wrong and you have an interpretation.:old:

Nice theme! Saddle up Dave's...LET'S RIDE.
Be back in a little bit with a tune ;)
Suppose I should ask now for clarity- Many of the tunes here were performed by LOTS of artists, and Ukester is a stickler for the original verse, do we need to do the same?
Wouldn't want to put all my eggs in one basket with a Bob Wills rendition only to find it ain't what your after-
Thanks for what is gonna be a great week Dave

As it was the only one I could play without to much practice ;-). I'm thinking we are going to see a lot of this song this season.

The main parameter is playing a song from that song sheet page, ...how you want to play it is your call!
i've covered many of these, some are close to Ukester's, some are not! think of them as a starting point!
have fun with these songs...play them straight up or make them your own!
ie., check out wee_ginga's great interpretation "If the Devil Danced In Empty Pockets"
cheers!

Brilliant idea for the contest, Dave!
We play a lot of the songs from Ukester Brown's website, so it is quite hard to decide which one should be our official entry. I guess this week we can hear a lot of different versions of the same song, really looking forward to this! For today we decided to post "Sunny" because we play this song almost the way Ukester Brown wrote it in his sheet. So if a beginner on the UU wants to learn it he can use our vid as a playalong.

Double the Dave, double the fun! I love Ukesterbrown's arrangements so now the difficult part is going to be choosing which one to record.

Already there are great entries! It's already shaping up to be an amazing week.

This week is going to get very busy! I first met "Ukesterbrown" at the Windy City Ukefest. I commented on his Kepasa soprano and he handed it to me to let me try it. He had just gotten it. Some time later I recognized the Kepasa in one of his videos and commented that I met a guy in Chicago and what do you know it was him. We have since had a continued musical friendship via the interwebs. I play quite a few of the songs from David's site, some because of his site and some because I have similar taste in music. My friend Stacey frequently asks me to play Sunny until she asked me to post a video so she could listen whenever she wanted to. This one is because of Ukesterbrown's site. Thanks David, keep them coming. I may have to redo it and make it my official entry. For now, it's bonus material.

I discovered Ukester Brown's website this summer when looking for a bonus song to do for Rain Week. The week before had been Garden Week so I thought I'd combine the two themes. I had never heard of this song before and could never have learned it without Ukester Brown's song sheets and YouTube video. I love old songs from this era so I have since gone to Ukester Brown's website and YouTube site often for chords, words and tunes.
Thanks for the wonderful theme this week sillydave. And thanks Ukester Brown for your amazing collection of old and lovely songs.

Transpose away barefootgypsy! Make the song yours. I have become very adept at transposing since I joined the Seasons. You need to be able to sing it in your key. Good luck and have fun! Some great material to work with this week.

An interesting theme, especially if you're into jazz era songs and there are some great songs in the list.

I'm sitting at my computer, knackered after a great singing weekend, catching up. I shall probably take a Seasons "Holiday" this week as there are one or two things I want to catch up on.

I have an Irish Eyes are Smiling Parody written by WWI soldiers in the western front which describes their experience which I might post as a bonus if I can get it recorded tomorrow. I sang it today in the last session of the weekend as it is 11 November, the anniversary of the WWI armistice. (Just as a reminder). Remembrance day has come back into prominence in Britain in recent years with our involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan and the deaths of too many soldiers there. Is it the same over the pond?

Nearly forgot: I'm hosting next weeks season - advance plug. I have what I hope will be an interesting theme lined up.

This song uses the tune of "When Irish Eyes are Smiling" which is in ukester brown's collection and something of the structure.

However, the words are different. It's a WW1 soldiers' song which describes their experience of battle.

http://youtu.be/_Bo37z6TeXw

I leave it up to you, Dave. If you think it's OK, then it can be my entry. If you think it has strayed too far from the theme, then I am happy for it to be treated as a bonus track.

Words:

When Very lights are shining,
Sure they're like the morning light
And when the guns begin to thunder
You can hear the angels shite.
Then the Maxims start to chatter
And trench mortars send a few,
And when Very lights are shining
'Tis time for a rum issue.

When Very lights are shining
Sure 'tis like the morning dew,
And when shells begin a bursting
It makes you think your time's come too.
And when you start advancing
Five nines the gas comes through,
Sure when Very lights are shining
'Tis rum or lead for you.

Geoff, this is a very interesting variant on the melody. The experience of battle interests me, and I read a lot about it because you can see what good humans can do for each other when they're on the same side. This song is representative of the gallows humor that soldiers in the field throw around to hide their real feelings. Very touching.

Thanks for the season!!

I have never loved a song in the seasons as much as I love this one!

Hey guys! So I didn't know many of these songs, and decided to go with one I had never heard, "Imagination." I was learning this thing all day, got it down, and then my fingers started getting sleepy, and losing their minds and this took too many takes to come up with what you see here. I love what I'm seeing, and I really like the songs on the Ukester's list, but I'm afraid I'll be sitting this week out, folks.

I've got a full shift in the morning (need to get up in less than 6 hours to make it in by 5 AM EST), then need to finish laundry, pack, do dishes, go to a Fiber Night at the knitting store, and then out the door by 3:45 am Thursday for the flight to California.

There just isn't enough time to jump in this week.

But I'm looking forward to the following week, when perhaps I can join with some co-conspirators and do something either totally fantastic, or guaranteed to ban us from ever submitting videos again.

Might even be both at the same time. (g)

Keep on Swinging, everyone! I'll just lean back and watch y'all this week.

@wee_ginga_yin Jazz Hands!! Another great song!!

@filipinouker You have nothing to fear. Loved your version of Summertime, you truly have a beautiful voice.

@xommen I did one calle "The Coffee Song" once, but it was nothing like this one. Great job!!

@000Kanaka000 Another wonderful video! Great job getting down and dirty and bluesy.

@peewee What shall you do? Play a great song!! :)

@weerpool That was such a sweet song. You did a wonderful job on it.

@FiL If the kazoo bothered your coworkers, they have some issues. ;) Great song!!

@GT3T11 Ginny, that was wonderful! Your dance card should fill up in no time. :D

@Tootler I'll take rum please. I love old folk songs and that you play them.

@ukuleledaveey Great medley! "Five Foot Two" is just a great to do a medley with, I think it goes with almost everything. I know this is really strange but when I clicked on your video I started thingk "Ukulele Davey likes to play his ukulele..." to the tune of Ukulele Lady. I don't know why, I should probably seek professional help.

@Penguinofsorts Girl, you can sing!! Great job playing that baritone.

@caroljean Such a pretty song and it sounds like your son like it. :)

@eugene ukulele One day, I hope to be able to play that good. Love your songs!!

@decaturcomp Spirit Fingers!!!! LOL, you just made my day. I find myself singing along and playing air uke when watching videos.

Bravo, Julien! A wonderful performance with three iterations of the melody.
It's great you're submitting to the Seasons challenges. How did you find them---were you watching for a while and just jumped in?

What is your uke, and is that tape on it? Are you playing it to pieces?

I was aware of the seasons since a long time but didn't have permanent access to the net.
My Uke is a simple concert oscar shmit and yes there is tape on it because the piece that holds the battery in place is broken...
This should be my practice uke but the other one, a tenor brucko, need to be fixed... I hope I will have it back soon.

So many great tunes to choose from, but this one was a certain stand-out for the Cloverdale Kid.
I learned it from Bob Wills, but Cab did it too (and did the heck out of it). The Hoosier Hot Shots did it and man they let it rip...what a great side.
My favorite version (besides mine of course) is by Dave Stuckey and the Rhythm Gang.
Enough of all that- Here's what I managed to cobble together in the kitchen tonight.
Nobody's Sweetheart Now- Billy Meyers ,Elmer Schoebel, Gus Kahn & Ernie Erdman. 1924
Such a great old tune-thanks for a great theme Dave.

Lily, I did enjoy this, a lot. Irving Berlin was unsurpassed with romantic ballads. He eloped with a woman whose father didn't speak to them for years because of it, until he needed Irving to bail him out after the stock market crash. Irving assigned to his dear Ellin rights to "Always," so she'd always have an income.

Now, what is that uke you're playing? It's not the blue Dolphin.

It's my first bonus! I love Frank Loesser so I couldn't resist, even though it's a duplicate. Also I had the urge to channel my inner Lola Albright. Somehow I don't think that last part worked out. Oh, and this was a single take... which I believe to be a cautionary tale. I'm off to England tomorrow and just wasn't able to clean it up.

There's a subtle tribute in here to my husband's late parents. I was very close to both of them, and I thought saying neither of them liked me would make them laugh. Actually, they would probably laugh every time I picked up the 'ukulele... but in a good way.

I hope you enjoy it!

What a great Week. Some classic tunes indeed.

Here's a bonus of a song that Ginny did already. I am combining Ukester's verion (in G) with a melody line tab from Uke class (in C) along with trying to apply what we learned about key changes / modulation and pivot chords(C to G and back to C), while at the same time embellishing the instrumental part with some chord melody type playing.
Here it is, over-ambition, sleep deprivation, and clumsy fingers have not helped the result:

What a great Week. Some classic tunes indeed.

Here's a bonus of a song that Ginny did already. I am combining Ukester's verion (in G) with a melody line tab from Uke class (in C) along with trying to apply what we learned about key changes / modulation and pivot chords(C to G and back to C), while at the same time embellishing the instrumental part with some chord melody type playing.

thanks to all!

What a nice version! You have been paying attention in uke class. I like the sliding chord change especially.
Your broken-hearted style (or is it fatigue) makes it seem the only future for you is riverboat gambling. The dock's at Memphis, Tennis C.

A lot of those are bonuses, brizzer. Dave didn't separate them out. I think the biggest Seasons yet was the British Invasion week. Though with three separate contests, Jon's Coffee, Tea, and Honey might have been bigger.
