Aloha Norma Gal,
Play with what finger you are most comfortable with for what style....I tried all my fingers.... and playing with your thumb is not bad at all
Lookie at the ukulele master Ohta san and tell me if that is wrong...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32pQP8UGQdU

Hey Stan I noticed that before in your HMS picture. You have matching thumb nails. Haven't been able to get mine like that yet.
To the original poster I use all four fingers or index on down strums and thumb or forefinger on up strums. Everyone is different. Main thing is enjoy yourself.
I believe it's best for a beginner to strum using their forefinger. Strumming and picking techniques with thumb and other fingers comes in a little later. That being said, lots of folks happy using thumb. Depends on how well you want to play. Lots of techniques will be based on that forefinger. Don't forget to practice up strums as well.
As a newbie myself, I'd say try them all! I started with the thumb, forced myself to use my index finger and now I can alternate pretty well! Just keep trying until you find something you enjoy imho
Try more than one at once too! I use index and middle, spaced about an inch apart sometimes, either to give emphasis on certain beats (you're putting more energy in with no extra effort) or just to give a different feel.
