I'm experimenting with strings. Any of you ever installed Salvarez Alliance Ukulele Strings on your uke? If, so how did they sound and feel? Where did you get them?

Thanks,

Tom

I did try the Savarez Ukulele strings but no LowG and a little bit to soft tension for me you can get the uke strings at just strings.com

I use Savarez 520R classical guitar strings on my Compass Rose and Mya Moe tenors they both sound great..i am an all out string junkie..

you can get them at any guitar store..or elderly.com

the ones i use are high tension..which i like..the Alliance might be to much tension if you get the 540 ones..
i use the top 4 strings..and the D string for LowG..they have very good sustain and volume..with a mello/deeper sound..and softer than most other strings

My string of choice, played them for the past two years and used to get the guitar strings and build my own sets, with the Savarez Reds, but now they have UKE Sets and they are very good. Strings by Mail is where I get mine, cheaper than some other online sites when I have checked. The 520's were great but now with the uke sets, I just get those. Same exact material as I spoke with the Savarez rep in France...who sent me a bunch of sample sets.
I have a lot of posts and others have had discussions on Savarez which you can search for.

They are one of my favorite string sets, up there with PhD's and Living Waters. I use Savarez Strings on my custom concert you can listen to hear to see how they sound. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGX7gtJ632Q

I use Savarez Alliance 540R (Standard tension) classical guitar strings on my tenor. Except for the (low) G string, which is a D'Addario Pro-Arte D Light Silverplated Copper Wound J4304. I buy them as single strings from JustStrings.com (http://www.juststrings.com/). I usually a half dozen of each at a time.

I use these, also. I have recently used the Savarez Corum strings for my low G, but I can see using the D'Addario also. I like them just a little more than the worth strings in similar dimensions.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. How would you make a uke set from Salvarez Alliance 540R using reentrant tuning? By the way, I use Salvarez Alliance 540R on my classical and love them

I use a guitar E string (541R) for the A, B string (542R) for the E, and G string (543R)for the C. I don't know if the E or B string would work better for a high G. I'd probably try the E string first.

Savarez Aliance are my favorite strings. I have them on five of my ukes. As uke4ia said before me, I use the 541,542,and 543 for the A,E, and C strings. For reentrant I use their KF 57 for the G string. For low G, I have used their Corum which is a polished wound string. Chuck Moore turned me onto these. Unfortunately Savarez has discontinued the Corum strings. At the suggestion of Matt from Strings By Mail, I purchased Savarez' Cantiga polished wound strings, 514 RH, which I believe has replaced the Corum. But I have yet to try them, so I can't vouch for them yet.

Thanks for the info Dana. I'm going to give this set a try on my Sideways8. The Aquila strings on it now, sound just a little dull and a bit 'thunky' on the c-string.

I haven't been using the 541, 542 and 543 series strings. I've been using the Alliance KF series and been happy with them. This is how I've ordered them for both concert and tenor ukes. I like them just a little more than worth fluoros. And I like worth very much.

Here's what I've been using and because I'm lazy, I will list strings #1 through #4 in a row separated by a comma:

Concert high g. KF55, KF66, KF74, KF57
Concert low g. KF55, KF66, KF74, D'Addario NYL026W
Tenor high g. KF57, KF66, KF74, KF62
Tenor low g. KF57, KF66, KF74, Corum 504R

Dana got me into the Savarez but I have since moved to the Southcoast double wound for low g and Medium Heavy for the reentrant.

I broke a set of Alliance Classical guitar strings and made my ukulele set. I don't know the number association for each string, but used:

First E for A
Third G for E
Fourth wound D for C
Second B for G

I like the results. There isn't much of a choice of uke strings to choose from in Greenville, SC. I'm hesitant to order online in that my credit card number was recently hacked and a substantial amount of fraudulent charges were charged to my account. Fortunately, the bank reversed all the charges, and issued me a new charge card. However, it was a real
hassle. (That's another story).

I guess my question would be: Does Salvarez pretty much use the same gauge of their classical guitar strings for their tenor ukulele strings?

the uke strings are a smaller gauge than the 520R classical strings..

Okay string junkies, i need your assistance. I have a Kanilea concert that i love with Orca strings, wow they sound nice. But i am open to suggestion, and curious about the Savarez, i have heard a lot of good things about them. But i am not knowledgable enough to put a Savarez string set together. I don't want to hurt my (baby) Kanilea concert with toooo much tension. Can you recommend a low G string combination for me?

Just switched out the Aquila strings on my Sideways 8 tenor to Savarez (using the strings Dana recommended KF 57, 543 R, 542 R, 541 R for G,C,E,A).

The Savarez sound more even and smooth, better intonation, clearer notes, less tinny and have more "sparkle" for lack of a better description, compared to the Aquila.
The Savarez feel better too. I like the Aquila strings, but I think I'm buying more Savarez.

I recorded a before (Aquila) and an after (Savarez) sound samples. The Savarez are still breaking in, as they have only been on a couple hours.
See if you can hear any difference. (Recorded with Blue EyeBall 2.)

Kent, looking forward to how the strings sound on your CR and Kanilea concert. Tension will be less on the concert scale, and that should be good, as the tension seems a wee bit on the high side for the tenor scale.

Hey Doc

I have a CompassRose-concert that is Cherry with a Spruce top. I have had trouble finding strings that sound great. Aquila nylguts, low G, are ok. I've tried several others, but nothing that i'm thrilled about. And i have heard that Rick likes the Savarez, and now i have strings on order (Thanks to Didg), i'll let you know how it goes. The Kanilea Concert with Orca strings is absolutely amazing sounding. That's what i want the CompassRose to sound like too. The CR has a wonderful sound, but the strings make such a big difference.

I was just at Rick's shop ordering my new custom today and played both his Koa and Cherry Ukes. Both ukes sounded just fantastic, no surprise. I think the Koa has the Savarez and the Cherry had the Aquilas. The Cherry uke sounded fanastic and I have not heard any ukes with Aquilas that sounded as good as Rick's did with Aquilas. Really surprised me as I am not a fan of their type of tone but they sounded great on that Cherry uke. Just shows you every build, style and string is going to sound completely different, you have to just fine what works for you. He does like Savarez as we were just discussing how much we both love those strings. He uses the wound Savarez and I use the unwound Savarez on most of my ukes with a wound Low G. They are fantastic strings.

Just to update an earlier post on this thread, if anyone cares.:) I restrung my Kamaka HF-3 yesterday with The Cantiga 514 polished wound low G along with the 540 series A, E, and C strings and it sounds fantastic. They replaced a set of Worth CHLGHD non-wound low G's that I also liked. The uke sounds alive again and also very balanced for a wound string. I had used the Corum polished wound before, but they are no longer available. A big thumbs up for the Cantiga!

Well, the Jury is in!

Here's what i did, i orderred the following from StringsByMail

3 x Savarez Alliance KF74 - .74 mm / 0.0291 inches, Single String (KF74) $9.30
3 x Savarez Alliance KF66 - .66 mm / 0.0260 inches, Single String (KF66) $9.00
3 x Savarez Alliance KF55 - .55 mm / 0.0216 inches, Single String (KF55) $8.70
3 x D'Addario NYL026W Classical Guitar .026, single string (NYL026W) $4.95

I figured 3 sets should do it. I wanted to test the strings on the Compass Rose Concert (Cherry with Spruce top) and on a Kanilea Concert koa, both low G. I have tried several different string sets on the Compass Rose. Aquila, SouthCoast 650, Worth clear, Orcas, PHD, and probably more that i cannot remember. I do remember Worth Brown not lasting more than an hour. The Aquila gave the best sound. I put the Savarez/D'Addario combo on, and i liked it. The best yet. A very nice sound, even tones on all strings, and good quality up and down the fret board.

On the Kanilea was the Savarez set that Savarez puts together for ukulele and i used an Aquila wound low G. They had an OK sound. Note to users, these strings had a very high string tension, and this made me nervous.

I put the second set of the Savarez/D'Addario on the Kanilea. Very good sound. And very similar sound to the Compass Rose. And my memory said the Orcas even sounded better than the Savarez/D'Addario. After a couple of days of the Savarez/D'Addario i put the Orcas on the Kanilea. And wow, that amazing tonal quality was back, singing of koa angels.

Here's how they will stay for awhile:

Compass Rose concert (Cherry w/ Spruce top), Savarez/D'Addario strings, wonderful sound.

Kanilea concert (koa), Orcas strings, beautiful sound.

When the Orcas wear down, i have several other string sets waiting in the wings for the Kanilea (Worth Brown and Clear, Martin, Ko'olau Mahana and 'Alohi, Fremont Black, Kamaka, Aquila red, Hilo Black). I'll update as we go.

Thank you for all the help. Keep those ideas coming.

Craig, thanks for putting me on to "stringsbymail." I ordered a set of Salvarez Tenor uke strings last week and in three business days they arrived. Great service. I'm really satisfied with these strings...... I like them better than the set I created from Salvarez Alliance Classical Guitar strings. Of the different sets I've tried, D'Addario Titanium, NyGut, Pro-Art; Aquila..... the Salvarez stand out.
