View Full Version : 43rd Season of the Uke: Mash-Up Madness!

Hey all! I failed at making a video this week because this presentation I have on Monday is eating my soul with a side salad. But anyway, it's week 43 of the uke--which means you have to do what I say* and that is MASH-UPS.

*Yes, I am five years old on the inside.

I love mash-ups with all of my weird little heart. The stranger and more random the mash-up is, the better, and there's not much cooler than hearing two songs that don't belong together somehow work. One time, at UWC, Colin and I mashed up T-Pain's "Buy You a Drink" with the traditional Irish "Oh Danny Boy." It was awesome. I think there's a video on the internet somewhere.

What I'm trying to say is, mash-ups are awesome and now it's your turn to blow my mind with some amazing seasonista mash-up madness!

The rules are pretty standard:

--There's no limit to how many songs you can mash, but by definition, there should be at least two. Otherwise, it's not a mash-up, it's just a song.

--Song choice is completely up to you. There is NO theme, and NO genre.

--The deadline is Sunday at midnight. Not really one for counting time zones, so have them in before I wake up on Monday morning.

--Please say it's for the 43rd season, and if you post your video elsewhere, please provide a link to the season thread.

--Because of the nature of the beast, please title your entry with whatever songs you're mashing, so we know!

--Multitracking IS allowed. Not a requirement, of course, but I'm throwing it in there to give people that extra bit of freedom, if they want. Nongdam, loop pedals are also allowed. YAY!

Bonus points for creativity, awesomeness, and randomness!

The judges are me, myself, and probably my boyfriend/sister if I can convince them to stop being studious and watch a lot of Youtube videos with me. Boyfriend is 26, I'm 24, and my sister is 20 so while you're free to choose whatever songs you want, I'm going to go ahead and conjecture that our favorite mash-ups will probably be those where we know at least one of the songs. What I mean is, the chances that we have heard the songs you're mashing drop the farther away you get from the 90's, unless you're doing classic anything, musicals, folk, or Queen. Don't let this stop you from doing your favorite revolutionary war ballad, but consider making said revolutionary war ballad extra awesome to make up for the fact that we've (probably) never heard it before.

Edit: On second thought, this rule probably does not apply to my boyfriend. He's German, and they know all the American songs from the 60's, 70's, and 80's, provided said songs have been remixed to a really awful techno beat.

As always, I'll update the playlists frequently.

Official entries: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-PdguYv0KETHoLbuiUtPZI7mMAqAbILZ&feature=mh_lolz
Bonus entries: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-PdguYv0KEQp52JV7VK3iWAKWQcoJ9SN&feature=view_all

Also, I probably won't be commenting on the videos much this week because I'd like to do another results video at the end. And I'm flying to America on Saturday to hang with my parents for Christmas.

PRIZES! Will be whatever random crap I can scrounge up for you at the local Christmas market. Yay!

That being said...

HAPPY MASHING!

Edit:What is the difference between a medley, a remix, and a mash-up?

Excellent question.

A medley is generally multiple songs, related in some way (artist, theme, genre), sung one after the other

A remix is generally a single song in which the tempo or style has been changed.

A mash-up is generally when parts of songs are combined to make a whole new song. Singing the lyrics of Song A to the tune of Song B is not a mash-up. Singing the first verse of Song A with the chorus of Song B is a mash-up. Singing the first two lines of the bridge of Song A with the first two lines of the chorus of Song B is a mash-up. The melody of each song stays the same, but the ability of two melodies to work together in a new way is what makes the mash-up. Any Youtube search for "mash-up" should give you a good idea.

There is of course significant overlap between the three, but those are the guidelines.

Hi, Tina... as someone who is considerably older than U, and only vaguely familiar with mash-ups, (tho' i do love them) I wonder if U would mind explaining here exactly what your definition of mash-up is... for instance, and this would probably be my most important question... would all the lyrics to each song have to remain true to the original? I tend to be one who substitutes lyrics at will - whether it's becuz i think the original could use improvement, or just to suit my own purposes.... i happen to think it's fun, fair use of creative license, and sometimes maybe even an improvement over the original..... OR even just a way of updating, making it more relevant to current times... whatever the reason, is any of that allowed? I have yet to even enter a season, being both technologically challenged & camera shy, but just in case this could be the week of my debut, LOL, or in case others of my generation are wondering similar things, would U mind spelling out what is OK in a mash-up & what is not?? Many thanks!!

My advice is when you think of two songs, don't go with it and go even more extreme!! Make it fun!

For example, I just got a new Ukulele Christmas CD and they had Mele Kalikimaka and Jingle Bell Mashup...TOO EASY

Yeah, I guess both Dave and Pootsie are right. To qualify as a mashup, the lyrics are sung faithful to their origin but with an entirely different melody.

Well drat. Here, I had just figured out that the lyrics to Eazy E's 1988 classic hiphop tune Boyz-N-the-Hood fit perfectly into the melody of Hotel California, but that would be a "to the tune of..." not a true mashup.

A mash-up is when you take two songs, and blend into one really cool song. Here are some more video examples that might help.

austin1
12-08-2012, 11:50 PM
If it helps anyone, here's how I mash up songs:

I generally do it in two ways. One is I get a song stuck in my head, and because I pretty much sing/humn incessantly, whatever song I'm bee-bopping to usually morphs into another song as soon as I reach the point where I no longer know the lyrics to the first song. The other way is I listen to a song on the radio/my computer, and then start singing another song over it--when both of those songs simultaneously sound good, I figure out a way to mash them up. As long as you have two songs in the same key, or two you can put in the same key, you're good to go. Then just play with the order of the lyrics. Another option is you pick your favorite song to play, figure out the chords, and then pick another song with similar chords. Then play the first verse of song A with the chorus of Song B. Does it sound like a song? Congratulations, you are mashing!

austin1

Yeah, I guess both Dave and Pootsie are right. To qualify as a mashup, the lyrics are sung faithful to their origin but with an entirely different melody.

Not true. You don't have to change the melody to have a mash-up. All you need to do is have two or more songs that you somehow blend into one. If they have conflicting melodies but you still make them work, more points to you.

Here's another example. This is a video I sent my sister after mashing up two songs I hate very much,. It's called Mashup of Songs I Hate, also know as A Thousand Years (Christina Perri) vs. I'll Look After You (the Fray). I figured it out when, after hearing the former on the radio, I realized it basically had the exact same chorus as the latter.

For clarification:

"A medley is a piece composed from parts of existing pieces, usually three, played one after another, while a mash up commonly sees parts of songs combined and played together to make an entirely different piece of music."

To my mind a Mashup is where you take the words of one song and sing them to a different melody
Like doing Rawhide to the russian tune Kalinka (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ax2rXsMbMGc). Whereas a Remix is where you take a well known song
like Five foot two (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m12srrAm1Lk) and change the tempo so it is more like a slow blues

I know this week is going to be a stretch for some, but I like to think that's what the goal of the seasons is: to stretch and get outside your comfort zone. For me, I used to freak at the fact that multi-tracking is so infrequently an option, but now I've learned to enjoy the challenge of trying to be creative with just me and my uke. I also think that sometimes we need to stretch in a direction that isn't a genre or lyric theme, which is why in my first (and now second) week, song choice is not a parameter. I don't care how skilled you are at mashing songs, all I want to see is creativity, and that you had fun. I hope this will be acceptable to all.

Okay, I've edited the original post with this, but I'll post it here as well:

That's a remix to me, not a mash-up. It's entirely possible, though, that "mash-up" means something different in England and in America. If that's the case, my intention for this week was the American definition, which I've set in stone in the original post.

yes. There's no limits to what you can do, but as long as you take (any) pieces from one song and combine them with (any) pieces from another, you've effectively mashed up two songs. Basically, you're just taking pieces from the music that's already out there and combining them in new, fun, and unexpected ways.

Wikipedia to the rescue

Definition of Mashup (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mashup_(music))
mashup or bootleg (also mesh, mash up, mash-up, blend and bastard pop/rock)
is a song or composition created by blending two or more pre-recorded songs, usually by
overlaying the vocal track of one song seamlessly over the instrumental track of another.

Remix Definition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remix)
A remix is a song that has been edited to sound different from the original version.
The person who remixed it might have changed the pitch of the singers' voice, changed
the tempo and speed and has made the song sorter or longer, or instead of hearing just
one person singing they might have duplicated the voice to make it sound like two people
are singing, or make the voice echo.

Medley Definition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medley_(music))
In music, a medley is a piece composed from parts of existing pieces, usually three,
played one after another, sometimes overlapping. They are common in popular music,
and most medleys are songs rather than instrumental. A medley which is a remixed series
is called a megamix, often done with tracks for a single artist, or for popular songs from a given year or genre.

So basically what I said :D Except to clarify (again) overlaying a vocal track onto the instrumental track of another does not mean singing a song to the tune of another--that would be overlaying the lyrics onto the melody.

Curious why, if you're going to use a Krabbers mashup as an example, you wouldn't use this one, which is actually a mashup. He starts playing "Price Tag" by Jessie J, then keeps that chord progression going while running a bit of Iz's Somewhere Over the Rainbow over it (at around 2:15). More evidence that you do not need to be a duo or multitracker to create a successful mashup.

Tina mentioned a bit about her age, generation and how that's influenced her musical influences. The lyrics of my mashup date from 1988. I remember being a freshman at the university and hearing the rapper Eazy-E for the first time. Being away from the influences of your parents, hometown and cliqueish high school friends for the first time, one is ready to experiment. I did so in my musical tastes. I'm not much of a hiphop fan overall, but I loved Eazy-E back in "The Day"...

I'm also not much of a rapper myself, but in the spirit of the week, I tried...

Oh yeah, lastly, this is NSFW. Rated "R" for language.

Hi all,

Okay, I get it now! Here is my entry; and yes, it was fun to do! I was at a loss at first, but I was thinking about N'Sync from the 90's last night, and then when I woke up this morning I was thinking of The Supremes' song "Where Did Our Love Go?" and voila!
Thanks again for the opportunity!
Seemlessly and beautifully mashed!

Well mashed, ukuleledaveey!
I guess it is the jumping from one song to another and back that makes it a mashup.

Thanks so much! Actually, I asked my daughter about mashups and she gave me some pointers. I was trying to think of 90's songs, and since my daughter was a huge N'Sync fan as a young teen, their songs are very familiar to me. I was going to mash two of their songs together, but then this morning I woke up thinking about The Supremes and I realized the two songs I ended up using had compatible tempos, and it just kind of all fell into place. :)

As I mentioned last week, I'm very happy to have a brand new computer, but unfortunately, it doesn't yet have the software capacity as my old, now broken, one. Here it is allowed, and I can't multi-track. Oh wellz.

I remember this song being played when Eazy died. You should have sang the chorus to Hotel California to make it a mashup...oh well

Not usually one to do covers, I thought I might sit this one out this week. Especially as I was terrified that all the songs I know are probably completely unknown to those who see the Nineties and Noughties as their reference points ;)

Then, half-awake this morning, my brain mashed the first lines of this effort I am presenting here and I leapt out of bed and got it all down in less than an hour. If you don't know these songs, you need a course in Rock 001. Enjoy....

Mash up of Los Pescadores (Buffy Saint Marie ) & Spanish Caravan (The Doors)
Can't believe i got it in the first take.

This IS MY OFFICIAL Entry :

Am sure that the Doors and Buffie Saint Marie
songs can be easily found and recognized. Am really happy with the mix of these
as i think together they work well to create a whole new song. They both work
towards a singular concept of Wanting to be in Spain with the Fishermen and
really having the longing and need to be there that translates out to the Spanish
Caravan take me away. Really enjoying this challenge now what else can i find
to meld together ? Don't worry won't be posting them but more than likely will
keep looking for others that go hand in hand.

Tina will have to weigh in, certainly, but that is generally what we mean by multi-tracking at the Seasons. Usually we only allow a continuous single take, but every now and again open it up to multi-tracking, when people will add different instruments and background vocals. The nature of the mash-up lends itself to vocals of two songs intertwining, so I assume this is why multi-tracking is in this season.

Having been "absent" from UU for a few weeks, not having touched my uke until today (practising like a mad woman!), I really found this week's challenge a mammoth one! Here is my attempt at mashing/mixing/confusing 4 songs:-

Hey baby I think I wanna marry you

We'll do it all
Everything

We don't need
Anything
Or anyone

Oh, can't you see, you belong to me,
my poor heart breaks with every step you take.
Every move you make, every vow you break,
every smile you fake, every claim you stake, I'll be watching you.

(But) When I see your face, there's not a thing that I would change
Cause you're amazing, just the way you are

(So) I don't quite know
How to say
How I feel

(Cos) when you smile, the whole world stops and stares for a while
(Boy) you're amazing, just the way you are

Oh, can't you see, you belong to me,

OK, I'm not sure I like doing this to songs but it's mash-up week so mash I will.
Mash-up of Eddie Vedder's Broken Heart, Wooden Heart (Muss I Denn by Friedrich Silcher), Achy Breaky Heart by Don Von Tress and Born With a Broken Heart by David Wax Museum.
I have taken some liberties, especially with the little bit of Eddie Vedder's song at the begining.
Songs cover three centuries - Muss I Denn written in the 1800s - Achy Breaky Heart from the 1900s - Broken Heart and Born with a Broken Heart from the 2000s.

Aloha,

I doubt anyone's noticed but I've not posted on any of the weeks since the Monster week! I'm so sorry for that, and slightly disappointed in myself. I can claim to have a few good reasons: my sister got married; we're short-staffed at work; and, to top it off, my laptop's broken so I can't record anyway! Saying that I've just realised the PC has a webcam, hopefully trying to figure it out and post some sort of video this week. I won't be able to multi-track though, which is a shame.

Anyway, just thought I'd share that slight rant/self-justification and hopefully I'll post something soon!

Originals found here
Eddie Vedder - Broken Heart (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iasPAGrn7Gk)
Wooden Heart - Elvis (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05ZgyoZvhgI)
Achy Breay Heart - Billy Ray Cyrus (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byQIPdHMpjc)
Born with a Broken Heart - David Wax Museum (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-mBx6tpGQk)

Great song, I like how you had a "Heart" theme for each song.

I've never tried to play a mashup before, but I'm a big fan of other people's mashups. I like my mashups as mashy as possible, so I really like hearing the vocal track from one song on top of the instrumental track of a different song and finding out that they actually work together even though the original songs had totally different chord progressions.

With that in mind, here's my multitrack entry, "Smells Like Billie Jean." I'm singing Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" while I'm playing Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean." Except when I'm singing "Billie Jean" and playing "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Or something.

Oh. And I put some guitar in there cuz it's Nirvana and Tina didn't say I couldn't.

And for some reason my computer got real glitchy and some of my video tracks got jerky and out of sync. Best I can do on a tight deadline.

I know, you ladies will say "It's only man flu" but that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. :old:

Gotye's somber hit seemed like prime mash-up material, and Nirvana's Sliver has similar rhythm and is about as depressing. (I blew my voice out at karaoke Friday night. Yesterday, I couldn't sing this at all; today, I barely could. Whew.)

Hi gang,

I've been really enjoying this week's entries, and until Friday, had been working up what I thought would be really great, Pumped Up Kicks and Dog Days Are Over. But the subject matter of the former, and the bits from the latter that I interpolated were way too raw after the tragedy in Connecticut. Weekends are my busiest times this season (7 shows between Friday and Sunday), so I don't have time to work something else up.

This mash-up will definitely go in my quiver, and once some time has passed, I'm sure I'll get it recorded, so thanks for that, Tina! And the rest of these have been gold. Great work, Seasonistas!

Finally finished my official entry this afternoon. I wanted happy snow/winter songs (major key) that had nothing to do with the holidays. I found many fine winter/snow songs written in a minor key. So I combined some of them to come up with a song that changes moods midstream. I paired the music with video clips of snow in my backyard (which have been filmed over the years- but the last bit was filmed just this afternoon). Et voila- my mashup. Enjoy.

Hey all!

First off, apologies all around. I'm sorry I was an epically bad host and dropped the ball this round. I picked the week that I did because I figured, since it coincided with me coming back to the States, it would be smooth sailing. It wasn't, but only because the second I got home I was pounced on by lots and lots of people I love which was great for everyone except you guys who entered, because then you had to sit around for a month while I got my life back together. So, apologies for that. Also, apologies for not doing a critique video--I really wanted to, but I don't have time to edit it thanks to a giant presentation I have on Wednesday (for which I am also editing a video). So I'm just doing a critique post.

And HUGE apologies to the first prize winner, because my dog ate your prize so now I don't have one.

Anyway. Enough with how much I suck, let's get down to the entries!

...starting in the next post!

...continued from the last post...

UKULELEDAVEY!
First off, thanks for being the first entry, bonus points to you for that!
Why I loved it
Those songs worked together so well--had I not known either of them, I would have had a hard time telling where one started and the other ended, which is what the true mash-up spirit is all about. Also, those were never songs in a million years I would have thought to mash together. Thank you for that.
Here, have a haiku.
Could the random mash
have been any better? No.
I like your hoodie.

XOMMEN!
Holy crap, how did you know Passenger was my new favorite thing in the whole world=
Why I loved it
Another two songs that work together really, really well. Thematically I don't think you could have picked better ones. Also, your singing was lovely.
Here, have a haiku
Did I mention I
love Passenger? Also, your
goatee is awesome.

JOKO!
1988! That's when I was born!
Why I loved it
I hugely applaud your rapping skills and I laughed all the way through your video. I loved it to pieces and it totally brightened up my day. I wish I could half as enthusiastic and brave in front of the camera as you.
Here, have a haiku
Your rapping is tight,
yo. Awesome glasses. Haha,
you said "slapping hoes!"

PATRICIAPDX!
I love your hat!
Why I loved it
In top of having an awesome hat, best. song. choice. ever. NSync and the Supremes? Amazing. Absolutely amazing. Plus they mash so well! And I had your song stuck in my head for the rest of the day.
Here, have a haiku
Thank you so much for
Doing a boy band. Extra
points for way coolness!

DAVEWAVE!
I have a German keyboard and I can't find the accent marks on in, so sorry your name is waveless.
Why I loved it
Way to mash up two songs that don't seem like they should go together, but somehow did! I loved your transitions and the way you performed the whole thing. And I appreciated the pictures! Because I'm five years old like that.
Here, have a haiku
The morning dew drops
onto the flowers below.
Loved your video!

NONGDAM!
This has nothing to do with anything, but you have a cool voice.
Why I loved it
I loved your interpretation of the songs--like that Crazy was slowed down into this funky, soulful thing, that Mad World got energized, and that Creep blended so well. It sounded great!
Here, have a haiku
Don't worry, my friend.
It doesn't make you crazy.
It makes you awesome.

BARABLANCA!
Sweet baby Jesus, I think your accent just took out Passenger as my new favorite thing in the world.
Why I loved it
Way to mix up the best classic rock songs, ever. Awesome, awesome, awesomeness all around, and you totally have the voice to pull all those fun songs off. Really clever arrangement--another one I don't think I'd be able to tell the pieces apart if I didn't already know them.
Here, have a haiku
I cannot express
how much I want your hat. So
I wrote a haiku.

000Kanaka000!
In case I haven't told you this before, your tattoos are really cool.
Why I loved it
Excellent thematic mixing! I always find myself mixing songs that are completely wrong for each other, but thanks for reminding me how amazing a mash-up can be when the songs actually fit each other! And your voice was stellar as always.
Here, have a haiku
I am totally down
with a trip to Spain! Also,
I like your style.

FILIPINOUKER!

YOU'RE DRESSED LIKE SANTA!
Why I loved it
Huge points for Weird Al Yankovic and Run DMC. Plus those songs went so weirdly well together, I enjoyed it thoroughly. Also, the Christmas at Ground Zero part gets stuck in your head so I totally bee bopped around my house singing it on Christmas Day and my mother was confused.
Here, have a haiku
Did I hear a dog
in the background or was I
hallucinating?

my sweet baby Jesus, you
sang about zombies!
