View Full Version : Good Wishes Please for Compass Rose Builder John Robinson

Rick Turner
12-11-2012, 02:37 PM
My main Compass Rose uke builder, John Robinson, who took over from Jake Maclay, is in the hospital with two broken arms, one or more broken ribs, and a collapsed lung from a motorcycle accident today. He was in about four hours worth of surgery at Eden Hospital in Castro Valley, CA today, and I'm waiting to hear how he is. I've talked a couple of times to his girlfriend Melissa, and she's pretty shaken up.

We have back up builders who can help fill the gap, but John will be sorely missed for a few months.

And just like that, life changes. I'm glad he's still with us, and like everyone else, I hope he comes back better than ever. What a rough time of year for something like this to happen.... Not that there's ever a good time. Adding yet another voice pulling for him.

Thanks for the update, Rick. Please give John and his family our best wishes for a quick recovery. I broke a finger on my right hand and gouged my left arm in a bicycle accident last year, and even with injuries so minor, I was amazed at how incapacitated I became just about ordinary stuff like daily grooming and maintenance. I know these things are the least of John's problems as he heals from more serious injuries, and I hope he heals fast and fully, but I understand how dependent he's going to need to be on others until he regains the use of his arms. I hope that sometime down the road he heals to the point where it feels as though the injuries didn't even happen.

He always has a positive attitude, and his passion for the craft is evident in the instruments that he builds.

I went to see John and his family at Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley yesterday, and John was smiling through his pain. He's going to be OK, but he'll have a long recovery. Being the guy he is, he immediately let me know that my luthiers are welcome to call him with questions. Looking forward to seeing you back, John!

Rick, I'm awfully sorry to hear this. These kind of things disrupt the life of the injured and everyone around them as well. I've been through this kind of thing in my shop - my friend took years to heal.

In the end, he came out well, and we came out well, but I'll never forget the time before the accident.

Best wishes to all.

Besides being terribly impractical up here in the land of perpetual winter, Motorcycles scare the wits out of me. I suspect it's the same down in the Excited States as it is here, drivers are getting more impatient and more aggressive all the time.

Wishing your friend and colleague all the best from Canada, here's hoping for a speedy and complete recovery.

I thought I'd resurrect this thread to ask how John is doing. I know from way too much personal experience that the healing process for broken bones, especially in appendages, can take a lot longer than just the bone knitting itself back together, as immobility, and frequently the injury-causing incident itself, can result in soft tissue, muscle and tendon issues. I hope John is well on the road to getting back to his pre-accident self and is in good spirits.

I talked to John yesterday, and he's doing a lot better. He's getting around and will see an orthopedic specialist next week about his hands which are slowly coming back to mobility. He managed to drive last week, and the main thing is that he's bored stiff!

John came by yesterday to check in...he's up and about, looking great but with some of the scariest X-rays I've ever seen...stainless steel plates and screws in both forearms. John will definitely be setting off alarms at airports from now on! He'll be in physical therapy for a while yet, but he's going to start coming back to work on an experimental part time basis next week while he awaits further word from the doctors at Stanford.

Welcome back, John!
