Hello, hello, and ho ho ho!

It is with great pleasure and anticipation that I announce the 44th season of the ukulele: holiday songs!

Your task - create a new video playing a holiday song of your choice. Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa, etc. If it's a holiday, and it's celebrated in December, it's good to go!

Your prize - a Lanikai Banjolele LB6-S, generously donated by the ever-awesome Mr. Tim "No V" Szerlong! How cool is that? I played the little guy this past October at the Milwaukee Uke Fest, and the thing is a monster. He had a couple other non-banjofied ukuleles for me to try out, but I fell in love with the LB6-S. Visit ukeeku.com and tell him how awesome he is, please.

Rules and guidelines:

Your official entry has to be a new video created for this season.
Your entry must mention the 44th season of the ukulele.
Only videos posted in this thread will be considered.
The ukulele must be featured front and center.
Your first entry is your official entry. All other entries are bonus entries. Bonus entries are ineligible to win the Lanikai banjolele. The entrants may change their official entry at any time before the deadline, provided they say so in this thread.
The deadline is Sunday, December 23rd at 11:59 PM, CST. That's mah birday! :D
Call me crazy, I like overdubs/multi-tracking. No bonus points will be awarded for overdubs, but neither will I outlaw them. Feel free to overdub to your heart's content.

And that's it! If I can get my Mac to obey me, I'll make a video for the contest, and edit this post to include it.

As soon as the first video rolls in, I'll post a link to the playlist. And here's the playlist (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLG4QVMv1Lrb6kgSh170m1LD9JVsGTYml2)! And here are the bonus tracks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-6gB1NmVbI&feature=share&list=PLG4QVMv1Lrb7PbEl_6VLcWcjS_hKhdx3U)!

Also - I'm new to running a Seasons of the Uke Contest! If I'm forgetting something, please let me know. I'll be your best friend.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for entering!

I own one of these wonderful banjoleles! We're probably going to do a Christmas song (our little family), so I'll enter anyway. :) I doubt I'll win, so someone else can get to have one of these wonderful instruments!

Have fun, everyone!

Edit: Thank you, Ginny, for correcting me (next post down). My faulty aging memory thought Tootler had called Season 45 for holiday songs months ago. It was actually Seeso who had called it for Season 44.

Seeso, Since Tootler said months ago that next week's 45th Season would be for holiday songs, I'm going to wait for next week.

Seeso called holiday songs for his week about three months ago when Ukuloonie first posted this sign-up:
http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/showthread.php?69035-Sign-up-for-future-Seasons

There are loads of holiday songs...plenty enough for two weeks.

Cameos from Esme the cat, Santa Claus, and a few of my ukes.

Peace On Earth, Happy Holidays to all UU'rs right around the world.

I think it's pretty traditional to require that the ukulele be featured - other instruments okay as supporting cast but ukulele front and center. (One would think that would be pretty obvious given where the seasons are hosted...but sometimes you just havta spell it out.) ;)

Oh, and congrats on the birthday!

Normally the first entry is THE entry, unless otherwise stated by the person submitting.

seeso this is your seeson (sorry couldn't resist) so as host I think you pretty much have the say.
In the few that I have entered bonus tracks are "labelled" or stated by the entrant as being a bonus track (and not limited in number).
Bonus tracks have not been eligible to win in the ones I know about.
Each entrant has only had one official entry - usually the first (but some hosts allow that to be changed as long as the entrant lets them know which is to be the official entry).
But I reckon you're in charge for this one.
I do know that you are going to get LOTS of videos if you allow more than one official entry with such a great prize.

PaBrizzer - that was so cute. It must be great playing Uke with your granddaughter. I wish my daughter would play with me. I had to bribe her to do a little melodica work on an entry for the Seasons a while back (French Week).

I love the look your granddaughter gives you at the very end of the video. Great life affirming video of a song I'd never heard before. Well done both of you!

Here's my entry. The Boar's Head Carol. This version of the song dates back to 1521 and it is associated with an ancient tradition of sacrificing a boar and presenting the head at Yuletide. The tradition definitely dates back to the middle ages and is thought to be Anglo Saxon or Norse in origin and is a sacrifice to the gods to favour the new year.

The custom is continued to this day at Queen's College, Oxford and I first learned the song from a Queens College graduate. There are number of other schools and colleges both in England and the USA who have a boars head tradition, some quite recent and others long established.

The song is macaronic - that is the words are in two languages, in this case, English and Latin.

http://youtu.be/cfa4swabkwk

The chords are for a standard C-tuned ukulele but I play it a tone up using a D-tuned ukulele

The [C] boar's head in [G] hand bear [C] I
Be[F]decked with bays and [G7] rosemar[C]y
I [C] pray you, my masters, [G] be [C] merry
Quot[F] estis in con[G7]vivi[C]o (so many as are in the feast)

Chorus
[C] Caput [G] apri [C] defer[G]o, [F] Reddens laudes [G7] domin[C]o (x2) (the boar's head I bring, giving praises to God)

The boar's head, as I understand,
Is the rarest dish in all this land,
Which thus bedecked with a gay garland
Let us servire cantico. (let us serve with a song)

Our steward hath provided this
In honor of the King of bliss
Which, on this day to be served is
In Reginensi atrio: (in the Queen's hall)

And taken that way, Jazzbanjorex.
Another bonus track but I'm pretty sure I won't be stealing anyone's thunder with this one.
It is an original song by Barbablanca and can be seen in Eugene and Eugenie's Christmas Song Competition.
Or by clicking HERE. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-o8Ut-WAYA)
Strange that a guy in Spain gets so many things right about our culture but he does explain that a little with his song intro.
But I rarely listen to the Queen's speech being a staunch republic supporter.
I also changed one word in Myrna's honor.
He said it was OK to cover it and post it here.
I was hoping to be standing knee deep in the water with the sun beating down. Instead I'm staring sort of blankly obviously reading the lyrics.
This is what can happen when other people start playing (with) your songs Berni....

ha ha well spotted, i used to be in a band http://www.youtube.com/sixmilesaway we did call me the breeze, the lads were so lazy they wouldnt learn new songs so what i used to do is write a song over songs they already knew ie mr christmas..." you play call me the breeze i'll do the rest"
also another of my originals is hitchin a lift, i told them you play folsom prison blues and i will just do my thing, unfortunatly their lazyness was the end of what could have been a good band,

Krabbers. Brilliant rocky Santa song.

Isaac, lovely..... and that Epiphone Concert Les Paul sounds fine. I applauded at the end, did you hear me? ;)

I'm hoping to get a non original entry here before the week is out. Luckily no-one has covered it yet. It's one of those "songs I wish I'd written" - Watch this space.

Thanks for the feedback, I've been a silent onlooker on the seasons for a while now, :)

For this season I'm singing one of those "songs you wish you'd written" from the Songwriters' Songwriter, the late Stan Rogers (of Canada).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQgldUAcAzs&feature=youtube_gdata

Here are the lyrics:

First Christmas Away from Home

This day, a year ago, he was rolling in the snow
With a younger brother in his father's yard
Christmas break, a time for touching home
The heart of all he'd known, and leaving was so hard.
Three thousand miles away, now he's working Christmas Day
Making double time for the minding of the store
Well, he always said he'd make it on his own
He's spending Christmas Eve alone
First Christmas away from home.

She's standing by the train station, begging for change
Four more dollars buys a decent meal and a room
Looks like the Sally Ann place after all
In a crowded sleeping hall that echoes like a tomb
But it's warm and clean and free and there are worse places to be
And at least it means no beating from her Dad . . .
And if she cries because its Christmas Day
She hopes that it won't show
First Christmas away from home.

In the apartment stands a tree, and it looks so small and bare,
Not like it was meant to be
The golden angel on the top, it's not that same old silver star
You wanted for your own
First Christmas away from home.

In the morning, they get prayers, then it's crafts and tea downstairs
Then another meal back in his little room
Hoping maybe that the boys will think to phone before the day is gone
Well, it's best they do it soon.
When the old girl passed away, he fell apart more every day
Each had always kept the other pretty well
But the kids all said the nursing home was best,
'Cause he couldn't live alone. . .
First Christmas away from home.

In the common room they've got the biggest tree
And it's huge and itís cold and lifeless
Not like it ought to be.
The flashing Santa Claus on top
It's not that same old silver star you once made for your own
First Christmas away from home.

YEAH!!! I was just considering yesterday doing this one. For those who don't know it, this is from Walt Kelly's "Pogo" comic strip. The group would sing the first part of this every year, then Beauregard the dog would insist that the real version was called "Bark us all bow-wows of folly". Back in the '80s, I wrote a Pogo-style version of Jingle Bells:

Gin Gilda
Gin Gilda
Gin Gilda LeMay
All the phantoms in her boudoir wonder who's been slain

Datsun troop or so
Any goner's hope in Spain
Oven the escargot
Latin Hall of Fame
Paisley cotton string

Oat muffins a-tizzle singeing flavors impolite

This is my 15th video in Seasons weeks, but the FIRST song that I picked, so I'm back to being a beginner. But the challenge of learning it was was good.

I'm throwing baskets full of sparkles and good-luck charms out to all of you Seasonistas, with best wishes for a happy and productive new year. It may be the year that the Perfect Uke finally comes to your home...

Great song Ginny.

Excellent finger style rendition. You're getting good.

Enjoy your holidays Seasonistas! Thank you for inspiring us to join this weekly ukefest. We look forward to many more.

PS: Ukelites, we know the German part is incorrect. We've had German in school, Saskia even studied it in college, but we stayed true to Stephen Merritt's original lyrics... ;)

This is my take on Woodshed's (http://www.ukulelehunt.com) arrangement of this classic tune. 2013 is going to be the year when I get serious about more instrumentals, and advancing as a player. So, a huge step out of my comfort zone with this one. And a big departure: no vocals. Gulp.

Hi All and First may i wish you All a very merry xmas and a prosperous and healthy new year. It has been a delight and pleasure in getting to know you all and making and sharing music with you all and here is to the next year.Thank you for your kind and generous words of encouragement and ego massaging :) i truly appreciate it all, and i think you are all lovely lovely people. So here is to next year and long may the seasons roll on.

Here is my offical entry for this week, I am personally a bit of a grinch, dont really like christmas and the mass panic and rudeness it brings out in people(especially when they are driving or shopping) But i do have a favourite xmas song and here it is covered ,butchered by me :) "Stop the cavalry" by Jona Lewie
I have chosen a rather poigant photo at the start, christmas day 1914 No mans land, when both sides laid down there guns and had a game of football. I think this world would be a far better place with out politicians, one can dream hey :)
Happy xmas every one

I love Christmas music! I've been enjoying everyone's entries so far--the classics, the obscurities, and the self-penned. But there are so many great songs out there, so I hope you'll indulge me in a few bonus tracks this week.

Here's the first, a cover of Robert Earl Keen's off-color "Merry Christmas From the Family", sort of a white-trash Christmas anthem.

John Lennon's Imagine as a bonus track.

Imagine there's no heaven It's easy if you try
No hell below us Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today

Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace

You, you may say
I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world

You, you may say
I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will live as one

I guess this is an atheist's song of hope.
But I think the sentiments fit well with this season.
I imagine the world could be like that. Maybe next year.

At the beginning of UkuleleDaveey's clip called Stop the Cavalry there is a picture of WWI troops who have left their trenches on Christmas day to play a game of soccer (and I believe some even exchanged basic gifts).
But you know they went back to killing each other in the following days.
Christmas can be like that - love of human kind one day - back to the hurley burley of everyday life the next.
I guess I shared the melody and lyrics of Imagine here because it expresses a wish for long lasting change - Christmas all the time - if you will.

Here it is nearly Sunday, and no one has posted this song.
So it falls upon myself to do the needful.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOrk8flkFnQ

C Am
Met my old lover in a grocery store
C Am
The snow was falling Christmas eve
C Am
I stole behind her in the frozen foods
D7 F G
And I touched her on her sleeve
C Am
She didn't recognize the face at first
C Am
But then her eye flew open wide
C Am
She went to hug me and she spilled her purse
D7 F G
And we laughed until we cried.

She took her groceries to the check-out stand
The food was totaled up and bagged
We stood there lost in our embarrassment As the conversation dragged
Went to have ourselves a drink or two But couldn't find and open bar
Bought a six-pack at the liquor store And we drank it in her car.

Am F
We drank a toast to innocence
G Am
We drank a toast to now
Am F
We tried to reach beyond the emptiness
G
But neither one knew how.

She said she married her an architect
Who kept her warm and safe and dry
She would've liked to say she loved the man
But she didn't like to lie.
I said the years had been a friend to her
And her eyes was still as blue
But in those eyes I wasn't sure if I
Saw a doubt of gratitude.

We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to now F
We tried to reach beyond the emptiness
But neither one knew how.
We drank a toast to innocence,
We drank a toast to time.
Reliving in our eloquence
Another "auld lang syne."

The beer was empty and our tongues were tired
And running out of things to say
She gave a kiss to me as I got out
And I watched her drive away
Just for a moment I was back in school
And felt that old familiar pain
And as I turned to make my way back home
The snow turned into rain.

Dave Wave - Great song! I loved songs which seem to tell you a novel's worth of information in a few short verses and a chorus. I had heard of Fogelberg, but never actually heard him. Looks like someone I should not have missed out on.

Good grief that snowy landscape in the background was perfect for this song. Were they local images from your area? Titanic iceberg sized snow drifts in the car park!!! Woo.... I am glad I am just about to go out and take a hike across some local hills in the Mediterranean sunshine ;)

Not had chance to comment on all the entries this week, but have listened to most, if not all. Great variety this season!

So never more heart felt "Seasons" greetings to all of you seasonistas out there! Bones Festes from Catalonia!

A last bonus song for this Season. This is an original Hanukkah song called "My Menorah Lit the House on Fire and It Burned for Eight Days". I finished the words and learned to play it just a couple of days too late for Mattydee's "Fire" theme. But since I wanted to get the video posted before the start of Hanukkah, it was two weeks too early for this Season.

I hope you had a Happy Hanukkah, Superb Solstice, Fantastic Festivus, and Above Average Apocalypse. And for those holidays still on the way, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and a Joyous Kwanzaa, and a Spiffy Epiphany.
