Watch the video or just skip down and read.
The song starts at 1.22. Waltzing Matilda by Banjo Paterson - an iconic Australian song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KV-Jp_EQB0U

As you read this the Little White Uke (LWU) is on its way to Spain.
Barbablanca will use it to post a video. (Thanks Berni!)
It will then go to The Netherlands for Wetigers to use. (Thanks Michael and Saskia). I'd love the LWU to get 3 or 4 more posts in Europe / UK.

If you wish to take part you can reply to this thread but at some point you will need to PM your address to the person who last had the LWU.

Cost to take part is your time and the cost of postage to the next UU member.

Decaturcomp (thanks Alan) has agreed to take part and when the LWU has had a few more uses in Europe I'd like it to go to him first.
I hope it goes from state to state in US and maybe into Canada.

Let's aim for 24 videos and signatures.

I thought it could end up with you (I was pretty confident you'd be in) before coming back to me, Eugene - Start and end here in Oz.
Thanks Kurt and Eugene,
It will be fun to watch but it is going to happen pretty slowly because of postage times.
On postage - it cost me $37au to send to Spain - so I would expect it to cost between $20 to $30 for shorter trips.
Here's to the LWU. She's (?) on her way!

eh????!!!! What post you using mate??? Sheesh...must be cause we live out the back of whoop-whoop, but that would cost me close to 100 bucks to send that far no doubt..hmm, maybe we need to move closer to town...would help the internet speed too which is neanderthal out here in the bush :p

Anyway, safe journey's for the LWU, may she encounter fair weather, friendly faces and fine music. :)

I'd love to have it stop here on it's way through the U.S. IIRC, Alan's on the west coast. I'm on the east, near DC, so it'll have lots of opportunities to stop in the heartland between him and me. But put me on the list wherever it makes sense.

Great to get all these keen responses!

But don't forget it is going to be like watching paint dry or the grass growing for a while.
I will start making a list of those willing and try and make some sort of itinerary for the LWU that makes sense distance and time wise.
It is very early in the morning in Europe at the moment so hopefully we will get some responses from there - and then off to the Americas it will go. Slowly.

Stay keen - it will take a while!
Cheers, Briz.

I am starting to worry about the LWU and its journey - it hasn't even arrived in Spain yet but was only posted on Dec 27, 2012.
It's not quite as fraught as putting a message in a bottle and releasing it in the sea - but almost.

In certain times in Australia men (yes mostly males at that time) would wander the country looking for work.
They would carry their bed roll - called a swag or sometimes a Matilda.
Thus 'walking with your swag' became Waltzing with Matilda.
So when in the song it says, "Who'll come a waltzing Matilda with me?" it is an invitation to join the journey down the road.
A little bit like joining in the journey of the Little White Uke!

BTW don't worry about your playing standard. Her journey is about inclusiveness and goodwill so if you're game join in.
We are nearly up to the magic 24 though.

Have removed the question mark - welcome aboard TheOnlyUkeThatMatters.

I saw that someone mentioned signatures.
If you can keep the signatures about the same size as mine things should fit OK. Use the front first and the sides only if need be.
Don't sign on the back please, because if the LWU makes it back to me it is going to be on prominent display in my house.
Please make sure you use a PERMANENT marker pen. I used one intended to label clothing. You can see a little mark on the side of the LWU where I tested to see if I could rub it out when the ink was still wet.

OK - Here goes - The first video in the series after the LWU's flight from the land of Oz.

I was going to do a well known Catalan Pop Song, but in the end decided to do one of my own Catalan compositions. It's a sad song with a social message that I wrote for a TV show I used to present (having been given the theme of The Cold to work on). It is followed by a short jolly traditional kid's song.

NB. The flags behind me are traditional Catalan flags. Recently, with the push for independence, there has been a run on the Catalan Independence flag (http://www.google.com/imgres?num=10&hl=en&tbo=d&biw=1111&bih=552&tbm=isch&tbnid=Y6qrQMu2ASYDeM:&imgrefurl=http://venusauxpoissons.wordpress.com/2010/07/11/senyera-independentista-igual-a-una-nacion-con-identidad-emprendedora/&docid=myLaho-wcc--2M&imgurl=http://venusauxpoissons.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/675px-estelada_blava-svg.png&w=675&h=450&ei=yF7rULLQItOZhQe_z4CABw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=4&vpy=135&dur=501&hovh=183&hovw=275&tx=134&ty=115&sig=116889523417152485518&page=1&tbnh=145&tbnw=218&start=0&ndsp=18&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0,i:91). But I haven't got one of those, so my daughter's blue bass guitar (just the right shade of blue with a dash of white) will have to hint at the missing colours.

Little White Uke says:
The Netherlands here I come! I'm all wrapped up again... Berni will be posting me tomorrow!

LYRICS and Translation:

Quin fred que ha fet

Quan tornava de la feina anit
vaig veure com un indigent
preparava el cartró que li serveix de casa.
Més tard m'estirava al llit,
vaig sentir un calfred, tan fort,
recordant aquell pobre home.

Quin fred que ha fet!
La gebrada va ser forta aquesta nit.
Tot és blanc. Quina glaçada!
No puc oblidar que hi ha gent
que ara dorm al carrer
Sigui amb neu o calabruixada

Prenent cafè al dia següent,
Llegeixo El Periódico.
Esgarrifat de tantes desgràcies
Guerres, plagues, suïcidis i fam,
De cop se’m van començar a congelar
Totes les meves ganes de viure.

When I was coming home from work last night
I saw a tramp
Preparing the cardboard that would be his home that evening.
Later, as I climbed into bed,
I felt an incredible shiver down my spine
Remembering that poor guy.

How cold it has been!
The frost was really hard last night!
Everything’s white; what an ice sheet!
I cannot forget that there are people
Right now sleeping on the streets
Whether it’s snowing or hailing.

Having a coffee the next day,
I was reading the newspaper
And was shocked at so many calamities:
Wars, plagues, suicides and starvation,
Suddenly, I felt my desire to go on living
Freezing inside me.
CHORUS

BONUS SONG
El Gegant del pi ara balla, ara balla
El Gegant del pi ara balla pel camí

El Gegant de la ciutat ara balla, ara balla
El Gegant de la ciutat ara balla, pel terrat.

The Giant of the Pine Tree is dancing, dancing, dancing.
The Giant of the Pine tree is dancing along his way.

The Giant from the City is dancing, dancing, dancing.
The Giant from the City is dancing on the terrace.

FANTASTIC BERNI!!
Can you PM me how much it costs to send to The Netherlands. It will be interesting to keep a tally of how much the journey costs the LWU.

Barbablanca

LWU now on its way to the Netherlands. I don't mind stating publicly how much it cost to send it. It was €14.85 (18.55 Aus.$)
That will probably be fairly standard throughout Europe, I'd imagine.

I look forward to hearing all the other videos and stories connected with the LWU. My wife had a brilliant idea yesterday when I had already wrapped it up and that was that I should have taken a few photos of my local area with me and the LWU. That'd be a bit of added value, if anyone else picks up on the idea. I'll try and post a few photos of me, a Uke and my town over the next few days to compensate for that piece of negligence ;)

That's actually a good idea. Gives the project some more attention. That's what it deserves! Pabrizzer, what do you think about this? If you want I can set up a page in no-time. Just let me know.

The LWU arrived in pretty good nick and a lot less out of tune than I anticipated. I'm considering putting on a set of aquilas, if that's okay with Pabrizzer. This project is also going to be a test for the little uke; traveling around the world and experiencing a lot of postal service beating and extreme temperature differences.

New aquilas should improve it a little but it is just an inexpensive LWU. It will have priceless value to me should it make it back to Australia though.
Face book page is a good idea but I don't frequent that place. I do have an account though which I never visit. If you do set up a page can you PM me the url please.
One of those carbon fibre ukes would have been ideal for the journey that the LWU is in for.
I'm sure hoping it is up to the task.

Do as many songs as you want. They can all go in the playlist. I have asked ukeval to play his lovely version of Waltzing Matilda so if those in custody of the LWU felt inclined to do their version of that song that would be EXTRA SPECIAL.
I hadn't thought of that when Berni had it so maybe he could do a version on that 'Tasmanian' baritone that I know he has.

We've been rehearsing today. Hopefully we'll manage to record tonight.
We have taken the LWU to see some sights. Here we are at De Grote Markt in the centre of our city Breda. You can see the lovely medieval OnzeLieveVrouwe Kerk in the background. Home to a famous grave of one of our ancient royals.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h229/sasenmike/CC532CE5-E327-4FAD-B865-0EEBB888C6A3-17830-00000FF73EF39C87.jpg

This next picture is taken at Spanjaardsgat:

The cool thing about this is that the LWU came from Spain to the Netherlands and Breda and Spain are linked through history. Spanjaardsgat is famous for being the spot where Dutchmen were able to fool the Spanish occupation by sneaking soldiers into the city walls by hiding them in a ship that went into the Spaniaardsgat. Today it is the home of our national military academy.
The following picture depicts the surrender of Breda to the Spanish, painted by Velazquez.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h229/sasenmike/740dadfcf5cac3b83a9477a1dca20a95.jpg

Maybe that's a better link to Berni. Breda was occupied by the Spanish, Cataluña is striving for independence from the Spanish.

I knew that Breda was familiar to me, but I didn't check on Wiki. Of course! That painting was used as part of an entrance test I was once involved in for a performing arts course.

Let's hope the Catalans have the luck of the Nederlands in getting independence and then going on to being a major European success story :) (But no equivalent of the Tulip Madness please ;) )

And here it is! The Dutch entry in the Little White Uke.
Having had some trouble finding a song that was culturally significant and did not mention football or beer, we took a slight side step and went for a song from an important Dutch television series. It was called Ja zuster, nee, zuster (Yes, nurse, no nurse) and was aired between '66 and '68, aimed at families. The songs were written by composer Harrie Bannink with lyrics by Annie M.G. Schmidt, who is one of our most beloved authors ever: every child grows up hearing her stories, and in her hay day as a columnist she was a subversive force to be reckoned with. The TV-series gained some sort of mythical status because almost all the tapes were re-used by the network for budget reasons, so very few images remain. Some of the songs made the hit-parade back then, and all of them are still available and still well loved.

We chose this song, Met u onder een paraplu (Together with you under an umbrella), because it is about rain, of which we have plenty in the Netherlands, and because it's a duet, which suited us fine. We went wild multi-tracking!
The lyrics have no specific cultural importance, and the translation goes a little something like this:

“Are you all by yourself out in the rain, Miss?
Maybe I can join you for a bit?”
“Well, sir, I’ll be straight with you,
But I must object to that.”
“Excuse me, Miss, it’s really pouring, come and give me your arm.”
“My mother says I mustn’t but I have to admit it’s warm.”

Together with you under an umbrella

They walked across the puddles, splishing and sploshing,
You could hardly see what’s in front of you because of the terrible rain.

“Isn’t this cosy, to walk together like this, Miss?
Isn’t it cosy in the rain?”
“Thank you, sir, I’m at my destination
The tram stop for the number 9.”
“I’m sorry, Miss, the tram’s just left.
Let me walk you to the bus stop.”
“Well, mother says I shouldn’t but I must admit it’s nice.”

Together with you under an umbrella

They walked along the waterside and walked along the canals
Hand in hand they strolled through the evening rain.
He said “Mind that puddle, Miss, the road is very narrow here.”
And: SPLASH!
They fell into the canal, umbrella and all.
They were pulled out of the water and the young lady said: “Sir, I see my mother was right after all and I will never do this ever again!”

“Are you all by yourself out in the rain, Miss?
Maybe I can join you for a bit?”
“Well, sir, I’ll be straight with you,
But I must object to that.”
“Miss, I have an umbrella.”
“What a great idea, and look, here comes my family, they’ll join us on our walk.”

Together with you under an umbrella.

Nope, nothing philosophical to be learned from that ;)

To answer your questions, Pabrizzer: yes, it's incredibly cold right now. There's some skating on the smaller ponds and canals, but the really large stretches of water that are used for the long-distance courses aren't solid enough yet. But usually this type of weather fills the Dutch with excitement and hope that the Elfstedentocht (Eleven city tour) can be held: this is a course nearly 200 km long and really separates the men from the boys! Last one was in 1997...

It wasn't as sturdy as it looked. I didn't have a suitable box to use as an outer box, so it basically was the same as in which it came, but with some extra wrapping and miles of tape...

The postage was a little under 15 euro (can't remember exactly), which is about 19 Australian dollars.

Little white uke visited Munich!!!
We took it sightseeing and it really loved the Hofbräuhaus
So we decided to record the most popular Bavarian Beer song called "In München steht ein Hofbräuhaus".
The song was written in the 1920s and is often played by a Blaskapelle (kind of a Bavarian Brass Band).
In the video you can see some photos of Munich. Saskia should have a look at the Rathaus, it owns a very famous "Glockenspiel" that sounds each day at 12am. :) At the end of the video a musician from the Hofbräuhaus takes the LWU.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ArxvlZH5-U

Of course this song is in German, parts are Bavarian.
I googled for a translation, only found this one, it's translated word per word (and not very good), but you'll get an idea. If not: It's all about beer and lovely Munich.

In München Steht ein Hofbräuhaus (literal translation)

There where the blue Isar flows
Where one with “Greet God” you greets,
Lies my beautiful Munich city,
That peers doesn’t have (that doesn’t have peers)
Water is inexpensive, pure and good,
(but) Only it thins our blood,
More beautiful are drops of golden wine,
But most beautiful of all is (this) one:

In Munich stands a court brewer’s house:
One, two, bottoms up
There runs many a cask out:
One, two, bottoms up!…
There has many a good man:
One, two, bottoms up!…
Shown what he can tolerate
Already early in the morning he started
And late in the evening he came back out
So beautiful (wonderful) is it in the court brewer’s house.

There you drink beer not out of a glass,
There there’s only “the big liter container”,
And when the first stein’s empty
Brings to you Reserl soon more.
Often at home the wife gets a shock
Stays the husband sometimes longer away
But the good neighbor people,
They know the score.

When also many a beautiful city
Sites has,
One is there nowhere like here:
That is the Munich beer
(He)who thought up this song
Has so many a long night
About Munich beer studied
And has it exhaustively tried.

In Munich stands a court brewer’s house:

LWU has left Munich today and is heading for Braunschweig to Elmann, then to Ukeval and so on.

But I'm a long way away from being able to control where it goes.
Europe ain't that big and is meant to be a union right?
So I am at a bit of a loss as to why people who came on very early are being bumped down the list.

I guess the important thing is that you all will get a turn and that you are communicating with each other as to where the LWU is going.

LWU arrived friday, picked up on Saturday, played on Sunday and, I hope so, Monday send on.

My vid background shows pics of in-situ research mine labs, for deposit of nuclear waste (my job has to do with this). Some salt mines are here around Wolfenbüttel. So my choice was the Steigerlied (Foreman/climber song)

First lyrics are from the 16th century. Miners always greet Glück-auf: be happy to come out/to open the rock + dig goodies. The oldest German mine in nearby Harz closed some yrs ago, and was in production since 10th century. Only 1000 years after start they detected, it was faster to screw tourists than rocks.

Although deep mining nearly vanished, Steigerlied is sung in all German miner regions e. g. the so called coal pott north of Cologne. It’s a popular anthem for miners, miner students and clubs, e.g. fans sing it at each game of premier soccer club Schalke 04.

Steigerlied (translation at YT)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtoTrpnUJ-Y
I gave LWU a typical scenic European ABC trip (Another Bloody Castle/Church): Lessing theatre (1909) is the follower of the first theatre building in 16th century - Trinitatis church was built by a duke as portal to a never realised city quarter - HAB/Library-Augusta is preserving the evangeliary of Henry the Lion from 12th century, which 1983 was bought for 17 Mio. EUR from my taxes - aside is Lessing’s house, with his most important character Nathan the Wise, but not wise enough to play the uke - aside also our castle, accommodating a college.

Despite all strong historical connections of regional nobles to Munic and to the British Royalty, I’d prefer to drop the rest of ABC.

But I’m encouraged to present the former (1878), and the new headquarter of Jägermeister. The herbal drink was invented in 1934 by entrepreneur Mr. Mast and the booze base is still only produced here. So a part of each Jägermeister you ever took, was coming from Wolfenbüttel. Have a drink on me!!

But here are a couple of photos which I managed to have taken during my short coffee break this morning. Also our first bit of sunshine after sooooooooooo much rain!

I'm afraid I've chosen to be "mute" in this video and, instead, have played two instrumental tunes: "God Save the Queen" and The Philippine National Anthem, interspersed with a few photos from the Somerset/Bristol area.
So, here's my humble contribution to the The Little White Uke's World Tour:-

Now that all of the signatures on the LWU are black I'd like to keep it that way please.
So sign with a PERMANENT black marker pen please.
Don't forget to add your location. When it gets to USA that could be your state.
I also want to keep a postage cost tally so please PM me or post a reply to the thread with postage costs.
If the front gets too full to sign please sign on the sides but not the back as this LWU is going to on full display in my house should it make it back to Australia safely.
I appreciate the further offers to take part in this project but due to space on the LWU for signatures and the time this project will take I will keep it at the 24 (+me).
It is going so well - safe journeys LWU!!!

Thanks Barbablanca. Sorry I didn't sing in Tagalog or write an original song like you encouraged me to do - maybe next time!
I love Clifton, Bristol very much! When were you living in this area and for how long? Was it for work or family reasons?

Hi Ukelites! The sunny weather was a fluke / blessing! I was kinda hoping for snow - like you had! It had been raining here so much recently - and I've been busy all week - but by Friday, the weather cleared. This little white uke is blessed and is a blessing, methinks! :)

That was cute playing you guys did. The xylophone worked well with it.

The song starts at 1.22. Waltzing Matilda by Banjo Paterson - an iconic Australian song.

Hawaii? (Yes I know it is a state of USA but it is special ukulele wise, right?)
I know we can't fit any more duplicate performances (same country) due to the time this project is taking and room for signatures but more COUNTRIES would be fantastic.

Hi Frax,
As Brussels would add another country to the the journey of the LWU I'd be happy for it to go there next. So if you PM Ukeval your address it could go to you next and then on to WeeGingaYin in Finland (he will PM you his address).
Brussels is sort of the European Union's capital right?
Cheers, Brian.

On the signatures I'd like them in Black ON the LWU front or sides.
We will come to what happens when we run out of space when it happens.
I thought filipinouker had forgotten to put her location with her signature, but now see that she has cleverly underlined a capital UK in her name. Good way to save some space filipinouker.

Hey guys !

I’ve got some special teasing for ya all today =)
I wrote an original song (music + texts) yesterday that I called simply “The Little White Ukulele Song”. I recorded it today. So sorry for the playing mistakes, it was my third shooting and wanted to give you something to hear.

So, in order to make you wait, here’s my bonus video before my Belgian song and outside shooting arrive.
Plus, I put the lyrics on the description of the video this time, because yeah remember ? That awkward french accent, still… =)
I hope you’ll enjoy it !

Hey guys !
Just a little feedback, LWU's fine here ! It sings a lot !
These last days have been a pain in the uke because of the snow down here.
But I'm glad to tell you I will be shootin pics and recording short clips in the center of Brussels tomorrow friday, with a friend of mine.
After that, I'll have to make the production of the vid, but I'm working at the hospital saturday AND sunday, which kills my week-end.
But as soon as each video's recorded (my short clips and the belgian song), I will be able to send it to Dr Bekken, Norway very soon !
If there's no delay on my planning, I should be able to send LWU to Norway in the middle of next week. I'll let you know.

Hey guys !

Here's my cover of Jacques Brel's "Vesoul".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWmQgB6hInE

This is a famous belgian song from a famous belgian singer, the lyrics are in french and I have to admit, quite difficult to sing ;).
I have some pics and short videoclips pending (i'll work on it and will post'em a bit later), but everything is now in my hard drive, so it's time to say the LWU good bye and let it fly towards Norway.
Dr Bekken, I'll MP you for all the infos concerning the shipping.

I HATE to say goodbye... but the journey goes on and on and on ! And this is so awesome ! Thanks pabrizzer for a great project.

Thank you pabrizzer !

Man, you heard well !!! I put a little joke inside, I indeed replaced the word "accordéon" by "ukulele" ;)
The song is one of Brel's most famous, and it often deals with music, disillusions, especially concerning relationship between men and women...

In this one, he sings that "she" longed to see many cities, so they visited them all ("you longed to see vierzon and we saw vierzon, you longed to see vesoul and we saw vesoul" etc...), but couldn't come to the places where he wanted to go ("you longed to see hamburg, so we saw Hamburg / I longed to see Anvers, and we saw Hamburg again ! / I wanted to see your sister, so we saw your mother.").
So, what did he do ? Tell her "So i swear, I won't go far, I won't go to Paris coz I hate the blare of waltz and accordion".
The song is a good waltz, with an omnipresent accordion.

That was lovely!
Thank you so much for the compliment teruterubouzu

Frax... ça etait formidable!

That's a very difficult song to sing and you handled it superbly. I had to open a lyrics page to be able to follow it, though. :)
I understood most of it, but what is a "flon-flon" exactly?

Good luck LWU on the next stage of your journey.

Barbablanca> flon-flon
Just detected: it's a sound imitating word (onomatopoetic), describing the sound of instruments (brass band), you hear from the far. Like "vouf-da-vouf-da" ;-).

For some wrong but sufficient translation: translate.google.com
Theme of the song: He went everywhere she wanted. Now's enough.

Thank you for your kind words Barbablanca !! =)

Yeah it's a hard song to sing, and Brel mastered it perfectly. He's the best performer I've ever "seen", in terms of emotions - he had this ability to "live" the stories he told with intensity and power.

the "flonflon" is a quite old term for talkin about blare, those noisy chords (I wouldn't say "noise" ^^) used sometimes in popular music, and in a way, quite pretentious. We really don't use this idiom any longer today !

le flonflon d'une fanfare = the noisy music of an fanfare, that stresses its presence...

I have to admit, this isn't easy to explain, hope this helps =)

It saddens me how wonderfully multi-cultural the US could have been if the joy of bilingualism (or trilingualism) had not been stamped out by the conformism of monolingualism. :(
