I would check the tension on the head.
If it is sagging it will sound muddy and the action may be low because the saddle is sunk.
I am sure you can do some web searching on tension adjustments.
Sometimes strings will have an effect on action as well as tone.
 
First, I'd make sure that the floating bridge was set in the correct position, and the hooks holding the head were properly tightened. Then try tuning it up to D and see if you like the sound any better.

After that, if you still want the action raised, check and see if you can find a slightly higher bridge.

I think this is great advice - and I have found that it's amazing just how different different banjoleles can sound, there's so much that affects the sound they make. They are real tinker-toys. Good luck with it.
