I learned today as I was buying 4 cubic feet of English alder that it is known as 'Waller' in Shropshire. Great day at a country wood yard run by an old Salopian joiner. Single 16' board 3" thick had some lovely flame and was a nice cream to orange colour. This type known in the clog making trade as Scottish Mahogany! Had to cut well inside the bark line to get rid of some long horn beetle infestation - they just love this stuff. After milling I got about 50 necks and 20 tenor sets out of this board. Gonna make some killer ukes out of this stuff! All for $4.25 a bd/ft!

Fantastic, Pete.

Funny thing, though. I saw "Waller" and immediately thought of the great Bluegrass guitar player and singer from the original Country Gentlemen, Charlie Waller...
