Any word on the Godin 'ukuleles? Do they have synth/MIDI access? It's filed under the multiacs and that's what they call the guitars with synth access, but I don't see anything definitive.

The Godin Multiuke is made in two models....a sunburst finish and blonde colored finish. They do no have multipin function for synth like some of their guitars do but play very well and utilize RMC pickups made in Berkley USA which is a very high quality pickup utilizing four individual saddles that are set compensated and a great preamp equalizer with volume control.
The Kala Archtop with the custom tailpiece and pickguard is a special model without pickup where the customer can special order severl options and customize their Archtop. These are still manufactured in China but the special customization to take place at Kala in USA. I will post all the new Flukes and fleas pics in next reply...
I will check my video function to find out why the focus is not working...the first day all the pics were from a phone but now i switched to my camera...

Ya that model is nice. cool slothead. I got to talk with Kim Breedlove again. He came by Koolau a few years back when we carried the guitars and spent a few hours with Noa and I. Seriously nice guy, had a place in Kauai for the past 26 years. He's pretty much retired now but still makes and loves Ukes. He has made some sopranos and said he got them sounding good and will add it to the line. He also asked me what I thought if he made the regular Americana tenor retailing around a grand in redwood and walnut instead of spruce mahogany. I'm like..uhhhh, YA!

Hey Aaron, are you guys carrying Pono? You should be, email or call for some great NAMM specials.

I'd LOVE to carry Pono. Spoke to John a couple years ago about it, just had a real hard time convincing the owner here. But I've let him play my 2 Pono's more and more, so I'm hoping I can get that going soon ;)

Unfortunately I'm not at NAMM right now. Andrews photo made me call our rep :) I saw it on a NAMM list they sent me last week but they couldn't provide photos. I would've bought it before NAMM had I have seen it.

I've never stocked a Breedlove Signature Model. I've also got a Master Class coming in (all Koa). I'll get clips, and hopefully we'll have a video setup and I can have some videos too. I'll give a full review when they come in :)

Great news, and it's about time. I guess all of our complaining about those schaller frictions did the trick !!

Anything new from Martin ? ?

I'm not at NAMM, but Martin introduced a commemorative Artist Custom edition 1T "IZ" tenor model. It's not a duplicate of Iz's Martin, but it's a lovely instrument from the pics and I've talked to some folks who played it and liked it.

Here's a link to the downloadable PDF brochure:

I love the look of quilted Maple! The blue is growing on me; I've seen several solid body electrics with blue quilted Maple, but never a uke.

This thread is killing me! I'm making an honest effort to thin the herd down, but there are some gorgeous ukes here.

Curious if anyone at NAMM tried out the Bill Tapia ukes, and if so, how they sound. I know they're built in China/Vietnam, but from the ukuleleunderground interview by Aldrine, the ones in Vietnam at least are hand built.

Someone who attends the San Francisco Ukulele Rebellion every-other-Sunday meetup brought one with him this past Sunday and let me play it. He bought his from the Strum Shop, near Sacramento, which just got a whole bunch of them. His looked great, and felt and sounded a lot like the Kala solid acacia tenor I used to own - crisp but a little soft. I think he had Aquilas on them. It looks like a nice ukulele for the price.

So I'm not gonna waste time posting things I don't like, but let me say this. This year is ridiculous. I mean everyone added ukes to their line. And most are not very good and most still don't know a thing about them. One guitar maker had all their new ukes strung with a high G set and tuned high G, but with the C as the G string and the other mixed also. The tension was crazy, and they all buzzed from this mistake, but it typifies what I am seeing this year. Plus China is just out of control. Factories go around saying we make for these booth numbers, go check them out and we can make for you. So you have 6 companies carrying the same thing with a different logo. It's a bit sad. Because all these guitar makers jumped on based on market numbers and not because they like the instrument or feel they can add something different to the market. It doesn't upset me. I'm just sayin'...Uke at 2013 NAMM is a new level of ridiculous.

It's not a good thing that the market is flooded with cheap or cheaper (but overpriced for what they are) ukes, from companies who just jump in because ukes are becoming more and more popular. Hopefully the independent music stores won't fall for these 'ukuleeches' and stay with the established brands like Kala, Ohana, Mainland, Pono, Kiwaya, the K-brands & Collins.

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks that the uke market has reached critical mass. I love seeing new developments in the ukulele world, but out of the countless manufacturers jumping on the bandwagon, there are only one or two new makers each year that are doing anything fresh and interesting. For example, I'm legitimately excited about Godin giving ukes a try because they're known for being innovative. But Peavey and Dean? We're good on generic imports stamped with a guitar manufacturer's logo already, thanks.

But yeah, it's like people got sick of certain cheap guitars, so now those brands will start slapping a logo on cheap ukes.

Haha, posers won't be missed once they leave the building... I do think most people go to the uke because it's fun though, not because it's trendy. The real threat to the uke's popularity is probably market saturation with those bad quality brands that put people off of playing, like yous were saying before. Hopefully these will die out by themselves and with a little guidance people will mostly focus on the good quality ones: adorable Makalas, wonderful mid-range brands, lush high-end ukes... I don't expect a price drop anytime soon though.

There's a difference in a fad and a trend. Fads fade away and trends fluctuate. In the 50's many said the guitar was a fad. In that vein many people then and now pick up a guitar to be "cool".

If there is a problem here is has more to do with us as consumers choosing quantity over quality and businesses being guided by analytics and money rather than love and sincerity.
The ukulele is here to stay. With so many great players and music this trend may fluctuate, but it will stay top choice for many. and for good reason.

When I think of the bubble bursting, I don't think it's gonna burst for everyone. I'm optimistic that we consumers have mostly been sharp cookies, and the quality stuff? Here to stay. The good stuff should more or less ride out trends. Roundabout way of saying I agree. :)

Two things at NAMM interested me.

Lanikai was displaying the Tuna Uke, an adjustable bridge similar to one on an electric guitar. Is it the cure-all for bad intonation?

The Blue Nessie microphone is getting a lot of mentions in the press. Is it that big of an improvement?

It'd be great if someone there could stop by the booths and do a brief video.

It's gotta be coming. I noticed a bunch of hipsters in a fashion forum about a year ago, proclaiming that ukes are now lame.

That word hasn't caught on to all hipsters yet, but it must be making the rounds...

LOL, I wish I had seen this. Hilarious!

I think the ukulele is still gaining popularity. If you go on tumblr, there are loads of new posts each day with kids/young adults posting pictures of their new ukuleles or moaning about wanting to learn the ukulele. Younger people are also open to the ukulele being used in popular music. They don't seem to have the same limited associations with it that people in my generation (gen-x) and older do.

Thanks for showing all this.

I tried to get a message to crossrock via email to see if they had a european distributor but it bounced. Have you got an up to date address for them please?

Is Chris Kamaka playing that bass upside down?

Yeah he most likely is. I talked with him last year and he was playing a right handed uke upside down. I asked him about it & he said growing up there were only right handed uke's around so he learned that way.

Thanks Andrew..

a good honest in detail posting of what is going on in the ukulele world..many of the new ukes look nice but got to play them to really know how the sound/tone is..most of the companies have no clue on what it takes to make um sound good!

kind of sure which ones i don't need to try..

I second your emotion..

Mike,

Awesome thread, great work.

Was great meeting you last weekend at the shop (I was the guitar player who wanted to buy and learn uke). Thanks for taking the time for the "blind taste test," was interesting that the uke you suggested was the one I picked blind...despite my wife's opinion, guess I do actually have some taste:rolleyes: Swapped it out yesterday for a Pono upgrade--another one you suggested. I need to stay away from uke stores, this is getting expensive:drool:

I've hardened my calluses, learned a mess of chords and a few songs, so guess I'm ready for the beach back in Florida when I return; so ladies, bring a plate:cool:

Take care of yourself, bro.

Thanks so much for all of you following this thread...Andrew has a few more days here and i leave in about 12 hours back to Hawaii...We have tons of more video and photos but are limited in time to process and post....As for this years NAMM it was a great boon to ukulele players but also shows the desire for those who really dont appreciate and value the ukulele to try and jump in on its sudden popularity...those that truly love the uke will continue to thrive but many companies will fade from ukuleles when and if the popularity wanes...they are in it to cash in and not really to further the ukulele.
It amazed me to see all the clones and copies coming out from everybody with no care as to infringement of design or being original...There was even a new company that had almost every established import models copied from everyone established in their catalog.
There was a question on chinese ukes and yes...many are made from the same factory but under different names...This is not always the fault of the USA importer...deals of exclusive designs and confidentiality are reached with the nakers and often they go behind and then screw the USA importer and start selling it with a different logo to others violating a agreement which because it happens in China or abroad they reallly have no legal recourse that is enforceable..The China music trade show you still can see a fake CF Martin booth selling fake CF Martins and a huge company like Martin cannot shut it down while on foreign soil...Ukulele manufacturers who are much smaller have no way of protecting their designs internationally at present..
The rattan case is nice that was mentioned in earlier threads is nice but coming from Japan the shipping and minimum orders to make it worthwhile it slim It is doubtful you will see any at a price in USA that is reasonable unless someone is willing to import container loads. And as always dealing with customs is a headache. I know of one company that had agents with guns on waist and automatic weapon rifles enter a ukulele company en force just to see if the labeling on the import ukuleles was correct.

It has been discussed by others but NAMM is not as fun as it looks, at least for me. 8th one in a row. I don't know what it is but it makes me ill. The ambient chaos to your ears as thousands breathe the same air. Must be me because many love it.
However, this year I had a secret mission for the truth. In recording. After sampling many, many high end mic setups. I am ecstatic to have gotten an Earthworks setup. So true. Blew away even the most expensive Neumann and others that just seemed colored to me. Earthworks, made in Wisconsin I believe. So excited.
So soon I will be able to show you guys vids of all of these new ukes coming in, as close to being in the room as I have found. Oh man, I can't wait! Thanks friends:D

Was that six string Gretsch a guitalele? I saw quite a few of those in pics. Is there a better market for these instruments emerging other than the high high end KoAloha/Kamaka and the low end Yamaha? I only ask because this may be the direction I am headed in and I liked what I saw! Also a huge thank you for the posts and pics. I found myself logging on each night to see what you all saw.
