The 50th season of the ukulele: Uncle Elvis Week!

I've been completely insane, so I'm crazy late. Sorry!
This week is the lead up to my birthday, so I am being completely selfish and choosing something that I want to hear!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCE-yN9TLWQ

Your task: Record an Elvis song! Easy, right! AH HA! There's a TWIST!
I want the B-sides (not necessarily LITERALLY a B-side)... I want the less common Elvis songs. No "Can't Help Falling In Love", no "Suspicious Minds"... I'm looking for songs from his movies that no one remembers. I'm looking for obscure.
You guys are amazing. I know you're going to blow my mind!

Prizes:

First - A copy of my new CD... which I'm furiously writing at this moment!, a "Mike Hind and his Magical Ukulele" tshirt in either M, L, XL or XXL, a pin and a sticker.
Second - A copy of the CD and a tshirt
Third - A pin and sticker.

BONUS! I don't know what the prize will be, but if you stump me and do an Elvis song I've never heard, there's gonna be something special for you!

Rules and guidelines:

1. Your official entry has to be a new video created for this season.
2. Your entry must mention the 50th season of the ukulele.
3. Mention where the song you are doing is from, so I can check it out.
4. Only videos posted in this thread will be considered.
5. The ukulele must be featured front and center.
6. Your first entry is your official entry unless specifically stated. All other entries are bonus entries.
8. The deadline is Sunday, February 3rd at 11:59 PM, HI time or 6:00 AM on the 4th, Bermuda time!
9. Multitrack if you want, but it may or may not count towards the final score.

The main criterion for a good score is awesomeness.

This means bring the joy. Bring the happiness. Bring confidence and balls. Show me how awesome YOU are!
Make me cry tears of joy.
Have as much fun as you can.
Picture everyone in their underwear or in Hallowe'en costumes when no one else is.
Remember, when you play, everyone wants to be you. Everyone is rooting for you.
Sing your hearts out! Play your hearts out!

BE AWESOME!

OK, here's my entry; there are a couple of things, in that I neglected to mention the name of the movie that this song is from, which is "Love Me Tender," although that might be surmised. Also, I made an error in the last verse, but I did this in one take and I don't think my cough will let me do another. Thank you for the opportunity, a fun theme!

I should be an honory judge cuz I hardly know any Elvis songs including the popular ones. If I know your song, you should be automatically disqualified! So far, I haven't heard any I know. LOL

Question:
Does the song itself have to be obscure or just Elvis' version?
Elvis covered a lot of well known songs but his version is pretty obscure.

YEAH. RIGHT.
Here is another bonus track done for this season, but sorry it's just me being me.
I may try and muster up some "AWESOMENESS" for my official entry but it'll probably just end up with me being me as well.
This was done by Elvis sitting next to some female in the back of a pickup in some movie.
I will argue that the song with these lyrics IS obscure. I hadn't seen these lyrics before.

Obscurity is in the ear of the beholder. So this obscure to me Elvis song may not be to real Elvis fans. Anyway.... Host, you decide.

Here's my case for obscurity, let the judge and jury decide.

This tune was released by E as a single in 1963 and bombed, stalling at #103 on the charts.
It was only when it was covered the next year by Terry Stafford that it got to #3.

Suspicion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suspicion_(Terry_Stafford_song))... which had previously been recorded (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_recording_and_reproduction) by Elvis Presley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_Presley), made it to number 3 in the U.S. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) and number 31 in the UK Singles Chart (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UK_Singles_Chart).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_Stafford#cite_note-British_Hit_Singles_.26_Albums-1) It had the unusual distinction of being at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_Hot_100) on April 4, 1964 just below The Beatles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beatles) when they made history by holding down the entire top five. The following week is when Suspicion topped out at No. 3 with the Beatles holding 3 of the other 4 spots of the top 5. Stafford's recording sold over one million copies.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_Stafford#cite_note-British_Hit_Singles_.26_Albums-1)

Elvis's original eventually got on the UK charts in 1976.

My favorite cover is the reggae version by Alton Ellis.

It took less than 15 minutes after I uploaded for YouTube to detect that it was copyrighted material, maybe because I mentioned Terry Stafford in the notes.

Hey Dave...you are aware that Elvis covered a couple of Hank's songs, right? ;)

I'm waiting for E to weigh in on whether songs that were hits for others but not so much for Elvis are legit, if so then I'm going to grab one of those Cash covers... LOL

JohnYeah, quite a few Hank tunes, and awesome songs like Muleskinner blues and Blue Moon of Kentucky. I have heard the first song he played in the studio was Earnest's "Walking the Floor Over You" but who knows if there is any truth to it. Some of his flops also went on to be hits for another of my heroes, Dean Martin. When I was a kid Elvis was about all I ever listened to ...here's the funny bit, I had never seen any of his movies until tonight. I am a better man for not having seen them, but OH WOW do I have our song for this week- there are some crazy songs in these films!
Only thing holding me back is the dance that goes with it- I ain't much of a dancer

He pretends to uke a LOT in Blue Hawaii. He also pretends to act- he was really great at that as my research is showing. I have since moved to Frankie and Annette because Melissa could not take any more Elvis (thought a Beach Party would do her some good- she is just scowling).

Did I keep Elvis albums? I have no idea what became of them! I know that when I first heard The Everly Brothers, Elvis got left in the dust! LOL! I've never had that much interest in his music since then. Seriously. I know that sounds like blasphemy to a lot of folks, but oh well!

I saw "Love Me Tender" at the Mariemont Theatre (which is still there!); and for some reason I seem to remember it as being in colour, even though Wikipedia says it was in black-and-white.

And I nearly became an accordian player at the age of ten...but it's a long story as to why it didn't happen. I'm glad I play the uke instead.

I like Myrna's style, so I am going to follow her lead with my FAVORITE Elvis song.
It is not obscure I don't think, so it is a bonus. I am certain it is a bonus because I could not find an Ukulele so I improvised.
The song was in a movie. A really bad movie about Hawaii so that has got to count for something.

Aloha, Seasonistas! Greetings from sunny Florida! Yup, I'm on the road. I've been quiet for a few weeks as I had a few things going on, but today I am at a computer and watching some 'ukulele! I'm on someone else's computer and I don't want to sign them out of their YT account so I can't post comments there, but I want to tell you all I am REALLY enjoying everyone's Elvis videos!

I don't know if I will be able to make a new video for this contest, so here is a bonus entry. It's not all that obscure but I never heard it until about a year and a half ago. I recorded this for Tootler's rock 'n' roll week way back in 2012. I hope you enjoy it!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY UNCLE ELVIS! This is a great theme, and thanks for hosting with such... awesomeness!

Here is my entry, for what it is worth. I'm not entirely happy with the result but I'll have to live with it as extra takes were not really improving it.

This song was a hit for Elvis in 1970, though not as big as in earlier times. I don't know that it's particularly obscure, but I hadn't heard it. I quite liked the song itself though I was not that keen on the arrangement on Elvis's recording - too lush. Anyhow, here it is: Kentucky Rain.

Yours looks like a very good quality one with leather(?) bellows.
I like the song 'Wooden Heart' and often do it when mucking around anywhere.

I started on a cheap concertina and once I realised I had enough money to buy something better, I did. There are a number of problems with cheap concertinas; first the bellows tends to be stiff which for an anglo, which is what you have, is a problem because of the suck-blow system. The second is that they often have intonation problems because the reeds are not always properly checked and third the mechanism is often sloppy and prone to fail.

Mine is a decent quality instrument but is only really mid priced. Even so, it was a big step up money wise. With concertinas there is virtually nothing between the cheap instruments and the mid priced decent quality ones. Oh! and yes, it does have a leather bellows. It is also light (in weight) and the mechanism is also very light so can be played rapidly, though I don't really play quickly. The mid priced instruments compromise by using good quality accordion reeds which, because they are mass produced, are much cheaper than genuine concertina reeds. There is a slight difference in tone but not enough to bother most people. If you want genuine concertina reeds you have to pay at least double what I payed for my instrument and endure a long (several years) wait.

As to the suck blow system, it's a matter of preference. I find it intuitive, probably because I've always had harmonicas which work the same way, but I know others who don't. You would probably be better suited with an English Concertina which has the same note on the push and pull. I didn't find the English Concertina suited me because of the layout of the notes on the keyboard and because the way you have to hold it. It's a case of each to their own.

Here it is... I haven't had much time this week to search for songs, and I'm not a big Elvis guy anyway, so most of the catalog was obscure to me beyond the stuff you find on Greatest Hits albums. Then I remembered this tune from my local Uke Club's songbook. And lo, it was a literal B-side -- released as the flip to Blue Moon in 1956. I started singing it in the shower this morning, and with very little effort came up with the kazoo solo and boom.

Thanks, UE for a fun one!

However, I have noticed that when Nanilei records me, I get really flustered. This took me EIGHT takes, and I had to get my music again because my mind just flew out of my head!
I'm not super happy with it, but the amount of pressure I was putting on myself to get one in the can was only getting worse.

So, without further ado, here is a beautiful song by Kui Lee, I'll Remember You.

Oh, and the intros were getting more and more ridonkulous mentioning how excruciatingly awesome Uncle Elvis is, and they were making me laugh, so I had to stop that. Maybe I should make a gag reel :)

One of the rules for my upcoming season will be to stop making excuses while presenting videos, particularly for those little miss perfect contestants out there (I am NOT talking about you, Tina, please don't get me wrong-your entry was awesome, by the way).

Yeah, I'm the big offender here, and its a fair criticism. I promise not to do it anymore, boss! Even this week seems like an apology when I go back and read it and I didn't mean it to be. I was actually pretty happy with this week's go.

(And I am a perfectionist, constantly disappointed. Sigh)

I started late, so I'm gonna give a little while longer (mainly, 'cuz I've been insane today and haven't stopped moving!)

If you haven't got 'em in, GET 'EM IN!

I love Susan Cadogan's reggae version of "In the Ghetto". I had no clue it was originally performed by Elvis. Or that Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds did an incredible version. Mine's a first-take, words-not-quite-right wonder...

Thanks, Uncle E, for giving us a week with the King. Viva Las Vegas! Viva las Seasonistas!!!

We had every intention to make a video for this week...
but then life took over.
I was going to dress in Mel's hammer pants and play the Uke, while she danced around in her belly-dancing regalia to the absolute worst song Elvis (my childhood hero) ever made.
Because that video will never see the light of day, and no one else has done it, I offer you this for a smile

Great week Uncle E- sorry we could not get it together- we shot too high, like Icarus I think

Aye- I suppose it was not meant to be. Helter Skelter in a summer swelter the Byrds flew off to a fallout shelter and we just did not have what it takes.
You know, it is funny trying to make a video on February third...because the three men I admired most, they took the last train for the coast, singing this will be the day that we die.
Just could not do anything but today.
At some point it may make it to tape, but today is a day of deep reflection here.

Here is my last minute (as usual) entry. "Adam and Evil" from the 1966 moving picture, "Spinout"

CoolKayaker, if you're watching, I bought that drum from one of those chicks who don't wear lots of make-up.

Hi Matt.
Thanks for the comment, we are all guilty at some stage during the seasons. You got more than ample reason for pride, particularly looking at the progression of quality of your submissions over the course of the year.

Now that I know about Elvis' penchant for 14-year-old girls, this song (and video) is really creepy.

And if I may rant just a tad... The movie poster for Harum Scarum indicates that the action is set in Baghdad, though it seems the plot is just some vague "middle east" place, but in any event the the clip displays a painful and uncaring ignorance of actual Arabic or Persian culture or any other "somewhere out east-ish" culture. The only identifiable non-western dance steps the girl did were actually South Asian.

Seriously, how wrong can they get it? As a scientist might say, it is so far off the mark it is "not even wrong."

... Oh, and the pedophile thing is creepy, too.

Man... when life piles on, it piles the heck ON!
I've been on my iPad for a few days and, for some reason, YouTube is a horrific monster of hate on the iPad.

I've been listening to all of these when I can and I have to say... You guys are AMAZING!
Seriously!

I'm composing notes and comments and counting points and adding more here and there.

The playlists should be updated properly now. Sorry I've been lax.

Now to get writing!

I just spent two days in the studio, recording my EP... and I love it!

I'm hoping tonight for results! (Just had a gig get dropped, so I have time)

hey E, congrats on the recording mate.

wanted to say, I made a terrible mistake and deleted my youtube channel by accident. Thankfully, I still had my entry on the computer files.

I've reloaded it, here is the link:

I'm pretty sure Tootler said in his intro that there were to be no winners that week. Just the joy of participation.
I too have been waiting for Elvis to let us know what happened with all those AWESOME entries for Elvis Week. Mainly to try and keep the "Winners" Playlist up to date.
