It seems like there's a dearth of new ukes that come with a pickup. I don't want to settle for something, but the idea of having surgery done on a perfectly good ukulele bothers me.

What's "normal" for this? Are new ukes that come with a pickup pre-installed somehow designed for it? Will an acoustic uke lose anything by having a pickup installed?

Unless you get one with a gigantic equalizer board, most of the soundboard transducers, internal mikes and under-saddle transducers are rather non-invasive, that
means they neither visually or tonally harm an acoustic uke too much. One of the benefits of having the pickup put in at the time of purchase is that the builder typically knows which pickup works with the uke, the risk of damage is with them, and, in the case of an undersaddle device, only require one setup.
