Just got off the phone with MGM and bought the last HF-3 they had. I'm going to have it set up with the low G and see how that is. My current uke is set up low G BC when I bought the strings I made a mistake and got the set with the low G........I like it tho' and figured I can always change it later.

I am so excited! This is a present to myself from my mom who just passed away a couple of weeks ago...:(

I mainly play guitar but I just haven't been able to bring myself to get them out.....the other day I was sitting at home and saw my little uke and picked it up and started strumming and found that although I am sad she is gone the sound made me feel better - the little uke has provided me comfort.

I've been playing Jake's Pianoforte for her and I think it will sound wonderful on the Kamaka. Now, whenever I play it I will think of her and smile.

MGM said I'll have it sometime next week.

I never owned a Kamaka, but know from Staci and Aaron and others that Kamakas rule. (Aaron owns a full store and could play any uke he wants--and he plays a Kamaka!). They are legendary for a reason, these Kamakas. Staci owns the best of the Ks, and I've learned so much from her comparison of them in answers to other threads.

Yes, yes, photos, Diane. Wow...you've jumped right to the big leagues.

We've exchanged PMs about your mom...and again, I'm sorry to hear of her passing, Diane.

BillMo, so you're the one......I do believe that makes us ukulele cousins....

Thanks everyone for your kind words. I have been blessed the last few weeks in that although she's gone my wonderful family, friends, relatives, and my forum family have provided strength and encouragement.

I talked to Andrew Sunday and he said he purchased 5 and 3 were already sold with 2 left. He said they would last about a week and I thought he was being overly positive but now I see that Kamakas sell themselves. I was thinking about getting rid of mine but better keep it now. LOL

And my condolence to you and your family Bigsky.

I'm very sorry to hear of your loss, I'm in a similar boat. I just lost my last living grandparent, my sweet grandma, and am flying home for her funeral tomorrow. But like you, I also just purchased a nice Hawaiian K-brand ukulele and when I get home it will be there waiting for me. I also imagine this uke will remind me of her often when I play it, as she lived many years in Hawaii and it was her favorite place in the world, and I bought it the day she passed. I think its really cool that with buying a well made uke that we love, it will be with us the rest of our lives. Kinda neat to think of the musical journeys we will have together, and that we will be old one day and still playing it! Blessings for your family, I'm happy to hear you are in good spirits with good support in this difficult time. Peace!

Hey, Big Sky. I just took delivery of my HF-3 today. Suffice to say, it is a beauty to behold! I'm in love! I can't wait 'til you get yours! You just can't go wrong with purchasing from Andrew, MGM, and the staff at Hawaii Music Supply. They can't be beat. I've made so many purchases from all sorts of vendors over the years and no one has come close to outdoing those guys. I'm so excited for you :)

Congrats! When you put it down maybe you can take a few pics for me and BillMo to see - do you have a NUD thread?! I am excited - I've been playing the OU7T alot but I know the Kamaka will blow it away. I probably won't get mine until next week so I will have to live thru you guys for the short term....lol

It's nice that you are finding a way you can remember her with an activity you love. Glad the new uke will help provide some comfort.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and words.

I am being impatient now, the FedEx site has not been updated since Sat evening saying it's in Memphis, TN. I threw up my hands and said to my hubby "why don't they update the tracking more often!" No sooner than the words had left my mouth than the phone rang.....it was FedEx with the automated update......very strange indeed and we both had a good laugh. I was like wow, that's really good service...lol

Should have it tomorrow.

Yes, I have been unable to put this beauty down!!!! After the mix-up with FedEx the driver delivered it at the end of her run about 4pm.

Since the box was cold I did let it warm up a bit before I took it out - not sure if it's necessary but over on the Taylor forum everyone suggests you let the instrument come up to room temp. It was probably thinking "where am I - as VA is alot colder than HI."

At first glance I was a little disappointed BC the koa didn't knock my socks off right out of the box. However, after I took it out and looked at it you can really see the flame in the koa. I have 3 koa guitars that vary from "plain ol' " to master grade and this definitely ranks up there with my 12 string koa.

It's so light I can't believe it, like air. I was actually a little afraid I was going to crush it or something....not really but it's so much lighter than my other ukes.

So the first strumm went something like "whanninnnngggg" and I started looking around for my tuner.....I had it strung with Worth's and a low g. Once in tune I strummed it again and, well.......just wow. It's so bright and clear and the sustain is something else.

I played a bit of Jake's 143 and it just sounded great - I was even able to do the d and e chords with one finger easier than my other ukes. Probably BC I was so excited.....

Then, my husband and I took turns looking every inch over. There were no major flaws - well, really ANY flaws - and the only thing I really was able to see after very close examination was what is probably a few buffing marks on the finish. You can see the pores and I think it adds to the beauty. My husband is used to my guitars and other ukes that are glossy and not satin like this one. I was unable to find even one thing that didn't fit together perfectly, there are no gaps or anything (not that there would be) but it's been my experience that even with high end guitars one is able to find something wrong with it.

Of course as all can imagine I have been playing it practically non-stop. It's beginning to stay in tune and sounds great. The only thing I noticed is the intonation was slightly off on the g and a strings but then I used a different tuner and it had the intonation spot on so I don't thinks that's going to be an issue. The strings probably need to be played in.

Here are a few pics - I wanted to go outside to get a few in the daylight but it was so cold today I didn't want to spend much time outside. Still trying to figure out my iPhone - everytime I upload a photo it turns them sideways.

Thanks everyone, I do love this little uke and have been playing it non-stop. The sound is so nice and the more I look at it the more beautiful it becomes.

Soooooooo, last week we toured the Martin guitar factory and then stopped by the local music store and got a...........Martin S1. I am not generally a fan of the soprano size but this is a little beauty.

Saw alot of the Martin koa ukes being built but I could not figure out how to smuggle one out without them noticing....

Hoping the latest UAS flare-up is satisfied, for now anyway.....lol

Wow, a Kamaka tenor and Martin soprano. You go, girl!

I think your Kamaka has great wood. Can you post bigger photos...would love to really see it.

Lovely! Now that the strings have settled, how's the intonation?

BigSkyUkuleleGirl
03-04-2013, 11:28 AM
Hi Steve, both ukes are so nice. The Martin is a little small but hey.....who's complaining!!!

I posted a NUD for the S1 and here are a few more pics of the Kamaka - my little cat Gabe photobombed one, guess he thought the ukes were getting more love than he was....lol.

The intonation issue seems to have resolved - I figured it was maybe just the strings settling in.

Congrats on both of your new sweethearts. Can't believe how little the Martin looks next to the Kamaka. Be sure and bring the Kamaka to Acoustifest. I'll bring the new Mako.

BTW, tracking says "Out for Delivery". Today could be the day.
