View Full Version : Season 56: FiL's Favorite Texas Singer-Songwriters

FiL

Welcome to the 56th Season of the Ukulele!

I'm from New Jersey, but I love a lot of music that has come out of Texas. I'm especially fond of the songs of Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, and Robert Earl Keen. So, this week's theme:

"FiL's Favorite Texas Singer-Songwriters"

Official Entry Playlist (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL73VgknTi6zadISLUmQpyVSpQO3cxKWjh&feature=view_all)
Bonus Playlist (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL73VgknTi6zaJqXlRwEg2yFKMYoX189HK&feature=view_all)

A. Official Entry Rules:

1. Your song must be one that was written or co-written by one of the following Texas singer-songwriters:

Townes Van Zandt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Townes_Van_Zandt)
Steve Earle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Earle) (Yes, he was born in Virginia, but he grew up in Texas)
Robert Earl Keen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Earl_Keen)

2. Your face must appear in the video.

3. The ukulele must be front and center in the music.

4. It must be a new video, specially created for this Season.

5. Unless you tell me otherwise, your first video posted will be your official entry.

6. You must state verbally or in writing at the beginning or end of your video that it is for the 56th Season of the Ukulele.

7. Please state verbally or in writing at the beginning or end of your video which songwriter you are covering.

8. In your post to the 56th Season thread on UU, please include the name of the song and the songwriter.

9. Overdubs are OK.

10. Don't post any videos before Sunday, March 10, Hawaii time.

11. Contest ends at the end of Sunday, March 17, Hawaii time.

12. Only one official entry per person.

B. Bonus Song Rules:

1. Bonus tracks must be new videos, specially created for this Season. Please don't repost your old Seasons videos. I've probably seen them already.

2. Bonus songs can be from ANY Texas singer-songwriter, provided the song was written by the songwriter. Here are just a few more famous singer-songwriters from Texas:

Guy Clark
Rodney Crowell
Joe Ely
Lefty Frizzell
Jimmie Dale Gilmore
Nanci Griffith
Butch Hancock
Don Henley (Eagles)
Buddy Holly
Waylon Jennings
Kris Kristofferson
Lyle Lovett
Willie Nelson
Michael Nesmith (The Monkees)
Roy Orbison
Billy Joe Shaver
Sly Stone (Sly & The Family Stone)
Bob Wills

You can find more at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Songwriters_from_Texas, though the list is far from authoritative.

C. Prizes:

There will be at least one prize awarded for my favorite performance. If I can't settle on one, I may award prizes to multiple winners. Prize(s) to be determined, but they will be awesome. Or maybe just mediocre. Who knows?

OK, now that you've made it through all the rules, let's make some videos!

This is a cautionary tale, so all of you take heed.
This is what happens when you tell the Kid to play some of his favorite songs- Bill remembers I am sure.
You get videos. Lots of really quick, unpracticed videos.
You get videos before coffee.
Before a shower.
Before pants.
Melissa will participate once we are decent...me? I have no humility, and indecency is a steady state.
Bonus Numero Uno- Billy Joe Shaver, Bottom Dollar

I saw Steve Earle for the first time at Farm Aid III here in Lincoln in 1987.
21 years later he played here again at an old movie theater.
Lots of water under the bridge for us both.

Here's my little tribute to him, a one-chord drone song played on three sizes of uke, u-bass and electric sitar.

While there are song I like by Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle and Robert Earl Keen I'm not enamored enough with them to try to put em on a uke. There are plenty of other Texas song writers that I do like so I'll just have to stick to bonus material. Hope to get one done today.

I love Townes' songs. thanks for a great topic.

"Tecumseh Valley"--that was pretty much perfect!

I learned some new songs today, like this Townes song - Snow don't Fall

His other snow song. Well done!

And I learned about this Townes Song called Lovers lullaby, I recorded both to see which one would be my entry, and I guess this is a bonus now.

I love the lyrics to this one. From what I think was his last studio album before he passed away, "No Deeper Blue".

Here's a bonus I've heard Guy Clark sing about a hunnert times. I love this one.

Alright, Guy Clark in da house! Loved that you picked a song with an Irish connection, as I was originally going to make this week's theme Irish songs, until I discovered it had already been done as part of the original six seasons. Both Steve Earle and Townes have Irish connections, too.

Oh my goodness, what a great theme.

I saw Steve Earle for the first time at Farm Aid III here in Lincoln in 1987.
21 years later he played here again at an old movie theater.
Lots of water under the bridge for us both.

So cool! When will somebody make an electric sitar uke?

"Live Music Is Better" bumper stickers should be issued. I think Neil Young said that. What a fun performance, Dave!

Townes most well known song is Pancho and Lefty.
Willie Nelson had a minor hit with it.
Does that help?

Steve Earle's big hit was Guitar Town (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AINUPFbFpqg). Probably less appropriate for uke, but still an awesome song.

FiL
03-11-2013, 09:22 AM
I knew when I picked this theme that some would be happy and others would be scratching their heads. Perhaps this will help:

Three of Townes Van Zandt's most well-know songs are "Tecumseh Valley", "If I Needed You" (a #3 country hit for Emmylou Harris in 1981), and "Pancho and Lefty" (a #1 Country hit for Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson in 1983). His songs have popped up here and there in the Seasons--I covered his "Snowin' On Raton" last week.

I'm not sure what would qualify as Steve Earle's most well-know songs, but "Guitar Town", "Copperhead Road", and "The Mountain" would be up there. "The Devil's Right Hand" is a personal fave of mine.

Robert Earl Keen is much less well known than the other two. SillyDave and I have both covered his "Merry Christmas From the Family" in the Seasons. Aside from that one, his most famous song is probably "The Road Goes On Forever" (covered by the Highwaymen [Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Willie Nelson] in 1995). I'm partial to "The Rose Hotel", "I'm Comin' Home", and "Feelin' Good Again".

Hmmm, Steve Earl's Copperhead Road and Guitar Town were big enough radio hits over here that they may have crossed the pond.

Some claim that Copperhead Road was the inspiration for today's "bag rock" but I don't know as I'd stick my neck out quite that far...

Well, the Pogues were on that record hence the Bagpipe-y drone at the beginning of the title song. WPedia says "Steve Earle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Earle)'s "Copperhead Road (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copperhead_Road#Composition)", released in October 1988, makes use of bagpipes throughout the song played through a keyboard."

Yeah...it's a whole genre now, bigger in Europe than on this side of the pond. Think RHCP (Red Hot Chili Pipers), Bags of Rock, Celtica, etc.

One bit of caution...if you start watching these on YouTube you may glance out the window a "few minutes" later and notice that the sun is coming up... :)

Earle's "Copperhead Road" album was extraordinary in the way it combined old school country and hard rock without compromising either one.

Wow, Berni singing "Pancho and Lefty"--it doesn't get much better than that! You made my day. Oh, and yes, I left a whole bunch of fine Texas sing-songwriters off my list in the bonus song rules--it was not meant to be an all-inclusive list, just a sampling. Sorry folks but I've never heard of any of this season's Texan musicians. Are there any songs that I may have heard before by any of these artists? Please don't kill me I'm just a humble Englishman. :(

Steve Earle's 'Copperhead Road' (1988) used to get quite a bit of airplay in the UK, only made it into the Top Fifty though.

Ha! My computer must be trying to tell me something ("Forget it, kid. Go try something else - that doesn't involve you opening your mouth")!
I record my entries using QT and my Macbook's built-in camera, but the default settings don't match YT's specs. So I have to export the original clip into a format that YT is happy with, then import the result into iMovie to add opening titles, then export/upload to YT from there. It's a very long-winded business (as an aside, why do entries have to be made via YT? Why can't we just upload audio via, say Soundcloud?), and so I left it running while I headed to my local ukulele jam (filmed last night for PBS, folks!! Let me know when it's on!). I checked in via my cell to see if it had uploaded, so I could post the link to UU Season 56, but at that point in the evening, my battery was down to its last 5% of juice, so I only had a couple of minutes to post the link before the phone died completely.
On investigation, it looks like the audio never made it beyond the first stage, export from QT native to YT compatible format. This time, it's made it as far as the iMovie stage. It'll be another hour or so before I know whether it's gotten as far as the wonderweb. Waiting around to die, eh? No. It just seems that way sometimes :)
Edit: just seen Eugene Ukulele's version. Think now I'll just leave mine for another day, or better yet, another season....

Eugene did make me completely re-think how I was going to approach this though. I too was trying to perform this in the style of the album version with Calvin Russell. Instead I've gone back to the way TvZ played this on 'Heartworn Highways'. What Brian and Ray said. There's a sweet Steve Earle song called "Nothing But a Child" that I'd love to hear a woman sing. I was talking to Terri about Townes' "Delta Momma Blues" which is written from a woman's perspective, an should appeal to anyones's inner Linda Ronstadt. For bonus stuff, Cindy Walker wrote top ten hits for everyone from (Lots for) Bob Wills to Willie Nelson (Shotgun Willie) and Roy Orbison's great "Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream?")

Purdy Please?

When I saw the subject of this Season, I was convinced that people would instantly jump on this song. It's always been one of my favourite Townes tracks. I was surprised not to see it yet, so I've put together my version. Also, I've discovered how to use the timer on my camera, which cuts down on the faffing around. Hope you enjoy. :) I've found this season so compelling that you may yet get a bonus out of me.

@FiL - I'd never heard that version of 'To Live's To Fly' before, and it's gorgeous! I need to embrace my style for future seasons, because my country tendencies don't really come through with the uke. :)

@Pabrizzer - You're spot on. Steve did write God is God for Joan Baez. (Was one I was considering, but couldn't string the last verse together. Thought that's pretty important, so I cast it aside.

Finally, someone remembered "Rex's Blues"! It doesn't get much sadder. Thank you Shady, it's clear you have excellent taste in music!

Well, I finally found time to get something recorded. I know lots of songs by lots of Texas songwriters - we lived in Lubbock when I was very young..... don't remember much about it myself, but my father, always a country and rockabilly fan, developed a lifelong love and obsession with the Outlaw and Cosmic country guys out in West Texas.... it's what I was raised listening to. The older I get, the more I love it and it's my favorite kind of music to play.

I made myself learn a new TVZ tune for this Season, always one of my favorites.... I've known it for years, but never sat down and played it through, figuring out the guitar part. I recorded the guitar part and then did a rough improvised lead with the ukulele.

This is from his record "High, Low, & In Between"..... I've often thought of covering this entire record - the more I think about it, I'm not sure that any other record has had such a profound impact on how I listen to and think about music as this one. It's one of the best albums out there.

This one's a bonus - I've got something else in mind and hope to get it recorded over the weekend.....

Thanks for the great Season - FiL! And thanks to all the Seasonistas for some fine listening.....

It's a Steve Earle song called 'Halo round the Moon.' from his album 'Transcendental Blues'

This is my first attempt at multi tracking.

I didn't have much success with the
IMovie programme for adding various images into the frame

I guess I ran out of time to figure it out.
So at the end of the song I have added the elements
that I would have used had I figured it out.
I also created a soundcloud version without me singing here (https://soundcloud.com/theukuloonie-1/56-season-of-the-ukulele-halo)

Here's my entry. I am only familiar with Townes from Skiddooo's earlier entries and with Steve Earle from The Wire, so it was nice for me to dip into the catalog. I found this song of Steve's from his 2011 release I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive. It makes a perfect uke tune, if you ask me. Thanks, Fil, for introducing me to some great music.

Apologies for being MIA for most of yesterday--I spent seven hours jamming with about 20 of my closest friends. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday!

I think the playlists are up to date. If yours is missing, let me know.

Townes' musical illustration of Hogarth's "The Rake's Progress (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Rake's_Progress)", I believe:

What happened? Did you run out of Guy Clark songs? :) Great singing, bro!

Here is my entry for Season 56 - Copperhead Road by Steve Earle. My co-worker actually suggested this song. To be more accurate, she was disgusted by the fact that I had never heard this song until she played me the video two days ago. I think I was too busy listening to Ratt, Motley Crue and Poison.

I think we had the same '80s, Gary! Though I was more of an Iron Maiden guy than Poison. Glad someone tackled this one. I like your folkie take.

This season was wonderful because it allowed me to show my love of country music that I usually keep hidden!

I realized this week that despite the years of singing along with this song, I never was actually singing the melody but instead a harmony line. So that gave me the idea for this recording.

The harmonies really add to this one. Hope to hear you do more of them in the future.

Peewee, you're my boy!

Since you asked politely, ok.

Multi-tracked in GarageBand: tenor ukes, U-bass (with Pyramid strings, get it?) in 3 octaves, drum loop & harp.
Live vocal & uke stick on the video.

OMG, you are a nut, Dave! I love it!

my fave TVZ song, a pretty intense affair. FiL, please make this my entry mate

Done. Intense, indeed!

[nothing to quote here...

Another well-sung song, but in a completely different way.

No need to apologize. Multitracking can make the videos very complex to put together. It sounds great!

Once again pulling from the Western Swing end of Texas music. You two sound good together!

Thanks FiL and Seasonistas and Happy St. Patrick's Day!

A great song for today! You have been a video-making MACHINE this week, Alan! And I love 'em all! Thank you!

Wow, the Seasons are coming around so quickly these days that I don't have time to listen to every entry!!!

Previously, I often skipped "bonus" entries... but this season that was barely an option! Some great stuff folks. You've introduced me to some wonderful songs!

That was flipping brilliant, Glenn. The fact that you've managed to incorporate the signature riff knocks this out of the park! I have to ask- would you mind sharing the chords? It happens to be one of my favourite Steve Earle songs.

Well, Season 56 is now in the books! Thanks for all who participated, whether you made an official entry, a bonus entry, commented on others' videos, or did all of the above. I am gratified to see that a few of you share my passion for this music. I was exposed to some excellent songs I didn't know this week, and I hope some of you were, too.

I still have to listen to and comment on the last batch of videos, but first I want to post one final bonus: My version of "Feelin' Good Again" (with apologies to TCK for mispronouncing his name!):

Hey all,

So I've watched and listened to all the official entries multiple times, and there are some really fantastic performances here. Thank you once again for playing along! It was a great joy to see how many of you connected with this music that I cherish. And the bonus videos--on my! What a bounty!

I wish I could give everyone a prize, but I settled on one performance that really opened my eyes.

CountryMouse, your version of "God Is God" was simply gorgeous: a perfect match of voice and song. I often don't like the way I sound when I harmonize with myself, but when you do it, it sounds like Heaven. I want to hear more of it!

In case anyone missed it, here it is again:

Here's a very late bonus for Season 56.

This season was the inspiration I needed to learn this song. It's still sloppy and need some work, but today seemed like the perfect day to record it.

As for my sloppy fretting...I'm going to blame it on a tired fretting hand, and too big a uke. I'm really a concert girl. :D

The FiL week lives on. How?
A buddy of mine from SEUKERS stood up to play at our unplugged open mic and said, "Alan I got this from your Australian friend." (pabrizzer - I've posted a couple of his videos with relatives to our group's facebook page as inspiration). Michael had looked up some of Pa's other videos including one from this week played on a Baritone. M. was looking for songs to play on his new bari so he chose this one:

It just goes to show you...each of our actions is like a ripple in still water.
