Welcome to Season 57 of the Ukulele - Songs About Songs. Or songs about music in general. If the lyrics mention something about music, that qualifies, although the more they pertain to the actual subject of the song, the better.

Rules:

1- Ukulele must be the main instrument.
2- Must be a new video, please state somewhere that it's for season 57.
3- If you want to do multi-tracking, go for it.
4- Originals and instrumentals are fine.

Prizes:
- Custom Schoenhut soprano with manzanita fingerboard
- Your choice of any item on the UU store up to $30, I'll pay the shipping
- Your choice of any item on the UU store up to $25, I'll pay the shipping

Judging:
The poll results seem to be in favor of host judged and random drawing, so I'll do both.
The first place prize will go to my favorite, 2nd and 3rd place will be randomly drawn.
The host's choice winner will choose among the three prizes, the first name drawn will choose among the remaining prizes, the second name drawn will receive the last remaining prize.

Here's a list to help jog your thought process: Songs about music

Please feel free to submit bonus songs from previous seasons if they pertain to the theme.

Here's a bonus track of my own to get things started:

Great choice for a season Doug. Already have a couple I'm thinking about.....

Little bit corny I'm afraid but it was especially written for this season.
I'd like to make this my entry if you'll accept it Doug.
It doesn't have an intro but was written for this season.

Music - Pabrizzer

For the day of our birth
Sadness and mirth
For seasons four (galore?)
All that and more
Bring Christmas cheer
Sing the new year
Music the mortar of life

Lullaby a child
Calm the beast wild
March off to war
Everything more
Deity praise
Battlements raze
Music the chorus (essence?) of life

At end of life
A lowly played fife
Slowly played drum
Just like we begun
For everything done
There’s a tune to be sung
Music all through our life

great theme Doug and what a beautie of a prize :)
here is a little bonus for you, a song i did last summer especially for TCK (Dave) "The night Hank Williams came to town" including a false start, a noisey rooster and some flufffed chords and singing (my usual standard :) )

I agree...great theme, although it took me a while to work out what the brief was, and what I wanted to do. Song chosen, however...just have to practice it, as there are some nasty chord changes. :D (More Marc Cohn.)

Super excited about this season, because I have a song that I love that I can learn! Woohoo!

I love it, Pa, great stuff. Music, life, birth, death -- nothing corny about that.

Broken Man's Lament ~ Mark Germino

This song immediately came to mind, but I couldn't remember the title.
Emmylou Harris covered it.
After some searching, here it is: late night, rough first take, squeaky chair...

Lyrics about listening to an old record, tuning a diesel to make it sing like Patsy Cline, and marrying a barroom singer.

[Whiter Shade of Pale came out in the Summer of Love, 1967.
It's one of fewer than 30 records in history to sell over 10 million.]

Broken Man's Lament ~ written by Mark Germino

I was once a broken man, I was once a broken fool
Lost my wife and children to one basic broken rule.
Now I live my life in silence, though I'm not quite in a shell
I drink and listen to that song - A Whiter Shade of Pale...

I was a good shade-tree mechanic, so I sent myself to school
They smoothed out my rough edges, in my hand they put new tools.
The instructor once he told me I could work on any line
I could tune to make a diesel sing... Just like Patsy Cline...

Well I met my wife to be through my mother's best friend's son
She'd been a barroom singer, she was as good as anyone.
Well I asked her to stop singing, and the girl she did not flinch
Next day she went and bought me a brand new crescent wrench...

We had three fine children as eight years went on by
And earned a supervising line, my knuckles stayed bone-dry.
But after supper I kept hearing her by the kitchen radio
Singing sweet, but desperate harmony A little bit too low...

She left three months later, I'd just come home for lunch
Note said "Easy come, hard go. I still love you so much."
She said I don't know if I'll be back, or if you'll want me when I come
But if and when that happens, dear, you'd better let my sweet dream run...

Great choice, Dave, lots of references to songs, singing, and music.

I am loving this theme, Doug, and the entries so far. I like when half of the puzzle is finding a song that fits.
I have several on my list..going to work though, so I don't get to torture you all right away..

Great theme! And, although not really necessary for a broad general theme like this one, it was nice of you to provide a "starter" list of songs. I'd like to mention that it would be considerate of the host to do this each season, especially when the theme is songs sung or written by more obscure artists, or at least artists several of us have never heard of. Researching these more obscure works from unfamiliar artists can take a great deal of time and I know, at least for me, discourages participation. Just a thought...

I have a pretty fun idea for this week, but it's going to take playing music on something I've never touched in my life. Keeping my fingers crossed I get it done in time!
