Fretwire with fatter tang

And to me, that is the most bass-ackwards way to control neck relief that I can think of. Sure, it kinda works, but really now...
 
Rick, it's an old tenor guitar without a truss rod. I straightened the neck of a yard sale guitar with heat, but I don't know if I would manage (or dare) on this one.

Please, can you give me some advice? Since you already guessed right about the purpose of the fret wire.

I'd seriously consider pulling the fretboard and installing either carbon fiber or an Allied Lutherie/Mark Blanchard truss rod.
