Hello, and welcome to the 58th Season of the Ukulele!! My week! I am really exited and I hope everyone has as much fun as I have.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwT5nH-9wQQ

THEME: Ok, this week's theme is going to be instrumentals. I looked through the other seasons and I realized there had never been a season focused just on instrumentals. So why not!

RULES:

1.Ukulele must be the main instruments.
2. Entries must be new videos and must state they are for the 58th Season of the Ukulele.
3. No Muti-tracking, I just want a straight video.
4.Originals would be great.
5 You can sing with your instrumentals, your instrumental would be effectively your strumming pattern.
6. Bonus tracks can be new or old videos.
7. Your first video is your entry unless you otherwise state.
PRIZES:

1st Prize: A Hohner harmonica neck holder.
2nd Prize: Set of Lanikai Aquila Nylgut strings for concert ukuleles.

JUDGING:

Judging will be done by me and my family.

Entry Playlist (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3uMSbjawED1B_EnwCNrIR2dvblqHBO_u)

Bonus Playlist (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3uMSbjawED3AapE_LXyxIp1ENI2asRpx)

EXTRA NOTES: If you already have a harmonica holder or do not have concert ukulele, let me know and we will put the prizes into a drawing.

We are not worthy!!

Wonder if there's gonna be a bunch of Jake covers? Probably not cuz so hard to play!!

OK, I made my comments just hearing the first few note but now just finished watching it and that is so cool. Usually they start with the simple acts and build up the crescendo for the show stoppers but you definally raised the bar. I was gonna play Mary Had a Little Lamb but scratch it now...back to the drawing board. LOL

After recording Sir Duke with Saskia for Season 57 a couple of days ago, I've been working on an instrumental version of the same song. I recorded it this afternoon for the Dutch ukulele forum www.ukeclub.nl but I'll post it here as a bonus.

Inspired theme this week, Andre.
Much respect to you for being the first host to do instrumentals.

It bumps us out of our comfort zone, and is especially helpful for people like me who vocally can barely carry a tune in a bucket.

Clever loophole for folks who still want to sing and strum, the challenge to bring your "A" game to the strumming / picking interludes.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

For my entry I submit this Pink Floyd number I've been noodling on the 8-string for a long time, got inspired to work it into semi-coherence with this challenge.

I edited it down to a "radio-friendly" three minute version by fading in and out.

"Fearless" was on the album Meddle, which came out in the autumn of 1971, the year I left home for college. We listened to it a lot it the dorm.

Old folks may unaccountably find themselves wanting to sing "You'll Never Walk Alone" on the fade-out. The original had a recording of the Liverpool football club choir spliced into the song.

Nice. As a former trumpeter, I always appreciate when people work the horn parts into their arrangement.

OK. Here is an original written for this season - It is called 10 Thumbs but after seeing the other fantastic entries (WOW!) I think I should have called it Eleven Thumbs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRT_Y0RsQJ8

Um. My instrumental has words.

It’s hard to play when you’ve got ten thumbs
They get in the way when you’ve got ten thumbs
You lose your way when you’ve got ten thumbs
What’ll they say when you’ve got ten thumbs

It’s hard to play when you’ve got ten thumbs
So hard to play when you’ve got ten thumbs
They get in your way when you’ve got ten thumbs
Some fingers would be nice.

This is an original instrumental called "Ukephoria". I took my username on UU and YouTube from it. I wrote this in 1982 on a Martin soprano.

A couple of years ago, I deconstructed this song in my head for the first time, and realized that most of the song is moving various minor chord shapes up and down the neck, while keeping the G string open as a staccato drone (like the dip-dip-dip-dip rhythm guitar in a lot of New Wave). Sometimes there's tension between the open G and the minor chord, and sometimes that tension resolves.

I expect to have a few bonus songs this week, because I've been practicing several instrumentals lately.

Ok well here's my entry. I'm NO instrumentalist and I'm not even sure if this counts as an instrumental. I'd like to know if people think that this would class as an instrumental or not. I haven't mastered melodies yet. There is a little humming and whistling in there. Its one of my favourite songs of all time (Creep - by Radiohead). I'm not even sure whether this band ever made it in the USA but they were very popular in the UK. For some reason it appears to be out of sync and I haven't a clue why as it was done in one take just me and my Uke (definitely no multitracking - apart of course from my dramatic intro). I wasn't going to enter this week so hope this will do.

Some really interesting and contrasting entries so far. I'm afraid mine will sound rather pathetic after this lot.

Chrimes: All I can say to that one is wow! Superb.

We tigers: Excellent. Very fluid sounding and relaxing.

~Dave~~Wave~: Very good. I like your technique.

Pabrizzer: You don'sound like you got 10 thumbs. Some nice chord melody there.

Xommen: Nice one. Simple strumming sounds fine to me.

Uke4ia: an interesting one. The beginning sounds a bit flamenco like, then the whole thing changes character.

UkeyDave: nice one. That has a nice relaxed, yet rhythmic feel to it.

Nongdam: that was really well played. Very much classical style. Who was the composer?

I hope multi-tracking is ok on a bonus track.
My audio interface module fried last week and I had to exercise its replacement to make sure it's up to the job.

This is the title track from the first King Crimson album that came out in autumn 1969, I'll never forget the first time I heard it, did my head in.

What is that you have on your U-Bass instead of the big rubber band strings?

Those are the German-made Pyramid wound strings, silver-plated copper wrapped on silk.
After trying four different kinds of poly strings, these won.
More sustain and better tuning stability, more like conventional bass guitar.
Pricey @ $59, plus $40 to have a new nut made, but transformed the instrument for me to the next level.

Now back to our regular programming.

I LOVE instrumentals and want to learn more......this one is Wildwood Flower, with hiccoughs, I'd never get it perfect. With thanks to Ken Middleton; his free tab.

And here's a bonus, the first instrumental I learnt, last year. It's Finlandia - a bit of classical by Sibelius. Mike Lynch's interpretation. I'm getting these done because if I leave it - it won't get done at all! I'm looking forward to watching the great stuff already posted... :)

While we're doing Scandinavian classical music...

Bonus track. This is "Death of ┼se" from the first Peer Gynt Suite by Grieg. I have a CD with the New York Philharmonic playing both the Peer Gynt Suites and three Sibelius pieces including "Finlandia", the piece Lesley played. I've got a book of sheet music for the first Peer Gynt Suite, and, well, this was way easier to learn to play than "Anitra's Dance". Twice, I got 95% of the way through, and messed up. The second one I decided to just live with, and this is it.

This might be considered cheating, but my original video sounded so flat and so boring that i decided to record the accompanying chords (in the background) in an attempt to make the sound a little fuller. The result is a video that's marginally less flat/boring :p

Oh well, here goes:-

This is my entry for Season 58 of the Ukulele Underground Contest (re Instrumental).
Lets say its a fun entry. I think the last minute is the better part. There's no way I am an instrumentalist on the ukulele (or anything else for that matter). Not been playing long enough yet - that's my excuse. But I don't want to be left out of a season.
I tried to make the ukulele the main instrument, but none of them sound that good...!
I happened to have a Lagerphone which I made recently - 250 bottle caps and a broomstick. The broomstick was easy, but having to drink 250 bottles of beer was a challenge...!!!!
This YouTube upload was the first take I did, with a rubbish'y bit edited out of the centre.
In the second take, I slammed the lagerphone down onto my toes (no shoes on!), that was enough.
Andre, I hope this attempt is acceptable as an entry - is there a booby prize for coming last....!

Urgh- I don't know any instrumentals...well, I have done one, for a season passed. I learned two tonight, we will see what they look like at the end of the week. For now they are as rough as a cob.
However, the song I judge all musicianship on... The song I love more than any other song (a tough call for a DJ for sure), happens to be an instrumental, and happens to be completely ridiculous and beautiful all at once.
Andre- may I offer a third prize for it? Don't want to rain on your parade here at all mate, but I gotta see this done (PeeWee- I am talking to you).

OMG!! I just realized as I was about to post this that I said "for season 57 of the ukulele," when this is of course, Season 58. At least I remembered to say it was for instrumentals.

http://youtu.be/JH4_6mctnms

Please excuse my somewhat lackluster performance, the wind noise and the out-of-tune soprano. I neglected to bring the tuner with me as I wasn't planning on recording this week's entry on my day trip today... Yes, I brought my uke with me, but I do that anytime I'm going to the beach. Today was the first gorgeous day of Spring here in Seattle, and I felt lucky to get the day off.

Then again, I only got two more work days left, and then I got a week off before I depart for Thailand; who knows how long I'll be there.

If you'd like to see the longer "Tour d'Joko" video from which I pulled this mediocre performance, click here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svbfiSEPhdc), or just view my blog in my signature. It's even ukulele themed as I used one of Julia Nunes' latest songs as the background music.

I love the way you changed the strumming to get the right mood - strumming hard over the sound-hole, for example. I've been a lover of classical music all my life - Grieg, Sibelius and Tchaikovsky were early loves, then Racchmaninov.... all very Romantic stuff... it took a lot longer to appreciate Bach and Mozart but I got there! Never made it to Bartok! I'm still smiling.... lovely.

OK- so we have a few things here transpiring against me.
In 1983, the Hag (Merle Haggard)...who I love, set the world record for most whiskey shots purchased (5095...40 gallons) On March 21st.
Then, I have this nagging song in the back of my head I have been trying to learn, and I bin all the time. I had never learned the second part until yesterday, so I guess there is a silver lining here.
It is about Whiskey Before Breakfast...
Anyone else see a theme emerging?

This song has the most meaning to me and my wife as this is the song I sang to her when I proposed. In our wedding reception, my wife surprised me and did the Hula in her mermaid wedding dress.

I only did one verse and it's too bad that you can't hear the words as it has lots of meaning. I am very proud of this song as it's the first one that I tried to figure out without copying anyone else.

Without this season, I would not have tried to figure this out as it's pretty hard to play with the chords and melody up the fretboard. I'm sure by the end of the week, I'll play much better but on to the bonus song!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVN6pZp6VG0&feature=youtube_gdata

VERSE 1
Tomorrow morning if you wake up and the sun does not appear,I,.....I will be here.
If in the dark we lose sight of love hold my hand and have no fear, 'cause I,.....I will be here.

CHORUS
I will be here , when you feel like being quiet, when you need to speak
your mind, I will listen,
and I will be here , when the laughter turns to crying,
through the winnin', losin', and tryin', we'll be together,
'cause , I will be here .

BRIDGE
I will be true to the promise I have made, to you and to the one who gave you to me.

ENDING
Just as sure as seasons are made for change, our lifetimes are made for years,
So I.......I will be here , We'll be together . I will be here.

Thanks Bonesigh

I really believe anyone can play instrumentals but the hardest thing is figuring out the notes so I started to share all my tabs for instrumental parts. I believe if playing all the strings are tough, just use the top 3 string and if that's tough, just use the E & A unless of course the notes are too low on those strings. The second reason is that I am forgetting how I played these songs. I memorize them for a season and then can't remember a few weeks later. LOL

Aloha guys and gals, this is our entry for this week. We took the brief of instrumental to mean as many instruments as possible! So we used: soprano ukulele, concert ukulele, melodica, harmonica, shakers, drum, recorder, electric guitar and some whistling thrown in for good measure!

This is the Progression of Rock 'n' Roll, 1950s - 70s. Can you name all the songs? 11 in total.

I hope you enjoy watching it as much as we did making it.

Really cool, you guys really got th twang down, looks like you need a harmonica holder, though. Mighty as montenegro.

I'm sure by the end of the week, I'll play much better but on to the bonus song!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iP-429MxrbE

That was beautiful, very nice.

I do the same thing with my instrumentals but I don't have the patience to tab them out. I usually just tape myself to remember. During Christmas I learned this great song "The Snowman". Never got around to taping it. Now I've forgotten it ): Learned my lesson!

LOL

I MUST have some sort of mental deficiency because my fingers just won't do what they're told! I've been a chord strumming guy for years now and have used every reason to avoid learning this stuff. But now it's go time. I've been working on a very little something all week and I truly need a lot of help. I love music so much, but it does not love me.

Yeah!

Peewee, shall I make a basic track with Saskia in GarageBand and email it to you?
I'm trying to get Saskia to play Telstar, but she's planning on doing some sowing and needlework; time to do some sabotage... Ghegheghe...

I know just what you mean though from a slightly different perspective. If I want to play a tune, I have other instruments I can play - recorder, flute or harmonica. I spent most of yesterday evening trying to get something down. Nothing fancy, just melody. It took me 80 takes to get something without too many obvious mistakes. I've uploaded it
You Tube but I don't feel it's really good enough so I will only use it as a last resort.

I might do what decaturcomp did and use my harmonica on a rack with the uke as accompaniment. Depends if I get enough practice time.

I was hoping to get something done this week and I have just about managed it. I would have liked to have had more time but I had a newsletter to do for our local U3A and then I lost two days as we went to a funeral of one of my wife's relatives which meant an overnight stay.

This is an original tune, a lament I wrote a few years ago after the son-in-law of a friend was killed in Afghanistan. He was working for a charity and was not in the military but was being transported by a military helicopter when it was shot down. The title of the tune "In a Far Place" refers to his having died a long way from home.

Anyone heard about Beck's recent music? Last fall, he released a collection of sheet music called Song Reader (http://songreader.net/). To hear these songs, you can learn them yourself or listen to versions being posted on the web (none of which are performed by Beck himself).

I spent the week learning one of the instrumental songs. Luckily, my pal Mike was able to join me on guitar. Beck's arrangement is for solo piano---it was fun to figure out a uke/guitar arrangement. Special note: this is the only song I've ever played that required me to play every fret on the first string. Whee!! Thanks for a great challenge, electrauke!

Very cool Ralf. Interesting song. Strikes me as a bit melancholic with a Tom Waits-ish style and humor, if that makes any sense.

Lyrics:
Well, I'd like to visit the moon
On a rocket ship high in the air
Yes, I'd like to visit the moon
But I don't think I'd like to live there
Though I'd like to look down at the earth from above
I would miss all the places and people I love
So although I might like it for one afternoon
I don't want to live on the moon

I'd like to travel under the sea
I could meet all the fish everywhere
Yes, I'd travel under the sea
But I don't think I'd like to live there
I might stay for a day there if I had my wish
But there's not much to do when your friends are all fish
And an oyster and clam aren't real family
So I don't want to live in the sea

I'd like to visit the jungle, hear the lions roar
Go back in time and meet a dinosaur
There's so many strange places I'd like to be
But none of them permanently

So if I should visit the moon
Well, I'll dance on a moonbeam and then
I will make a wish on a star
And I'll wish I was home once again
Though I'd like to look down at the earth from above
I would miss all the places and people I love
So although I may go I'll be coming home soon
'Cause I don't want to live on the moon
No, I don't want to live on the moon

I know the contest has not ended but just a heads up.

Hey Andre, the seasons are a weekly contest - it's the one thing that holds true from week to week: Saturday night to Sunday next. Folks sometimes continue to post bonuses after the week has concluded, but it really does take away from the next season to keep accepting full entries into the following week. One day of crossover is enough.

This week is awesome, and I'm sure no one wants to see it end, but end it must, I fear. I'm sure if you wanted to extend in a more official capacity, starting a larger instrumental contest in the general contests board, lots of folks would continue to enter.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to posting my entry for Season 58 this afternoon!

Hi all! I've been enjoying watching this week's entries... I've been hearing songs I've never heard before played on this beautiful instrument. Last year, I tried doing instrumentals, but it was a bit difficult for me to pick up like Ginny said, my brain and my hands can't agree and my fingers need a little more stretching exercises, so i decided to just keep singing and strumming :p... but there was one song that I've learned and I decided to enter it this week. I know it's pretty simple, but I think it sounds good on my sopranino so here it is :o

What a challenging week. Thanks for coming up with such a great theme electrauke. There are so many awesome entries this week. I'm really impressed by everyone's skills. My entry is a chordal arrangement in which I attempt to keep the melody note as the top note in each chord - not an easy task (especially since I needed lower notes which meant some chords are only played on three strings). I practiced and practiced and still cannot play these chords as smoothly as I would like. But I gave it my best. Hope you like it.

I cannot allow this to stand, sir! Don't you understand that it's YOU we like? That you can throw out a rockin' tune on a Mahalo smiley-face uke in one take when you're frying up dinner matters WAY more than fingerpicking! Get back to rock tunes, where you belong. :)

Hi Moons,
I commended you on taking on such a challenging piece a year ago and now you have mastered it!

Wow! Thanks very much, that is an amazing compliment and means a lot to me. I watched the original after I made this one and I cringed. Thanks

JUDGING UPDATE ALERT:

Going through some grueling judging right now, so many great entries. Had to bring ElectraDad in for his opinion and have it weeded out to the top 5. May have new category of most EPIC intro and most creativity, with the prize of a certificate.

Now back to the regularly scheduled program.

Thanks for the great entries, sorry I took so long, I wanted to give everyone recognition. If I missed you, do not take it personally, I was just skipping through pages.

Thanks again

Well done boys, quoting myself from earlier this season:
- it's not over until the eugene sings(or does not in this case)
- dave has no weaknesseses

Excellent week Electrauke. I must admit that when I first saw the theme my initial reaction was rubbish. I was WRONG big style. It made me go into unfamiliar territory and it turned out some fantastic entries and was thoroughly enjoyable week. Thanks for hosting and thanks for the mention. I'm glad it brought a smile to your dad's face. For me, playing the ukelele is all about having fun as well as trying to improve. A brilliant week. Thanks.

Great Season, everyone! Thanks, Andre, for putting it together; congratulations to Jon and Dave; and a heaping helping of appreciation and respect for everyone who played her or his first instrumental this week---way to meet a tough challenge!
