Next: I'd like to say "Kanile'a GL-6" but it's likely to be a Gretsch Guitalele from HMS, and I won't be any less pleased than if it were a Kanile'a. Andrew rates the Gretsch Ukes, and only a fool would argue with that.

My only Uke: Inexpensive soprano on loan from a friend.

No UAS here!

I think the last uke I got was a Harmony baritone, over a year ago. Wanted to reward myself for finishing nursing school by ordering a custom that would be done by the time I graduate in August, but I'm going to owe more money than I hope to make in a whole year after this. And the wait lists keep getting longer and the prices keep getting higher, so I'm probably better off sticking with what I have. If I end up with some pocket money in the near future, maybe a Firefly.

Louis0815
03-31-2013, 10:57 AM
last one: ukelyptus concert Flea w/ pickup (replacing a natural Flea which kept buzzing for some strange reason)

Well,
About 6 weeks ago I posted that I was getting ready to turn over my current crop of ukes to my daughter and the grand-kids so I asked for suggestions about an upgrade from my current Lanikai concert and Chocolate Dolphin. Given the caveat that I live east of Denver, CO.
It's dry here. I humidify but my hygrometer regularly pegs out on the dry side at 16% outside and it's not unusual from the weather reports to see single digit humidity throughout the year. It's all my humidifier can do to keep my "music room" at much above 30% unless it's actually raining or snowing out there. During the winter, I vent the clothes dryer inside the house for warmth and humidity.
"Country Mouse" a contributor here, kindly suggested looking at a Fuke as being mostly bullet proof though I'd been leaning toward a Mainland of some kind; slot head and no rope appeals to me.
Anyway, a Natural Fluke with rosewood fretboard came up on ebay so I went that way.
I'm very happy with it. My 1st concern is it's odd shape, although it is comfortable to play even when standing ( I can walk around the house, playing with not much effort), it holds like an axe; just strange in the hands, like an electric, or something.
My main criticism of it is that I don't care for the tone of my Dolphin so much anymore: Too "plinky=annoying".
My other half heartily agrees and listens to my clumsy practice without compliant where before, she would get up from the TV in the other room to close the "music room" door when I played that Dolphin.
Next buy? I don't know. Carbon fiber if I knew what they sounded like and liked the product?

Last bought - Kamoa E3-P
I really dig it. It was a birthday gift and I must say it provides great bang for the buck.

Next - I'm a little strapped for cash right now. I'd love to be able to grab a Kamaka or a Boat Paddle uke. Those are a bit unrealistic due to financial constraints at the moment. Realistically, I'll probably snag a plastic Islander or Flamingo off of ebay. For some reason I've become very fascinated with those lately.

I last bought a Kelii koa concert, which has been really great. A big step up for me from my Kala KA-S. (It's kind of like when I went from a resin clarinet to a wooden one. Both sound like a clarinet, one just sounds better.)

Next purchase? I don't know. I have a rather small list of things I'd like to buy; I think it's just going to be a case of which opportunity strikes first.

Last uke (for myself)was an Epiphone Les Paul. Next uke will be a Kala KA-JTE BK - hopefully. That is, a Kala Archtop acoustic-electric in the all black finish.

I am a huge fan of Koa Pili Koko, which is really the last uke I bought - but it was gift to my son. I have played it a good bit - mostly working playing pieces by J.S. Bach. My son and I switch out. One of us is on the KPK soprano and the other on a Favilla B-2 Baritone. The sound on the KPK is beautiful. Clear and bell-like. It tempts me greatly. UAS is pulling at my sleeve.

This thread has been like attending an AA meeting. It is comforting to I know I am not alone :)

Last Uke bought was a Jack Daniels Tenor Uke - I wanted a cheap and cheerful instrument I could fit a pick-up on and could leave in Open G. The side sound hole on the Peavey was ideal for fitting the pick-up with the minimum of fuss and cabling - plus no hole drilling! I am going to play it in our new blues band where I think it will also look suitably appropriate.

No real plans for a new one. But if I ever do get a new Uke, it'll probably be an Ohana Concert CK-35GS.

Last uke I bought (which has already arrived) is a Kamaka custom mango tenor (wonderful)

I just placed an order for a Jason Wolverton Tenor (experienced classical guitar luthier--relatively new to ukes, but his stuff looks and sounds great). Pua Ferrau back/sides and old growth redwood top. I'm buying a bunch of new ukes, just to try--be on the look out, I may sell some even if I like them.

The last one I bought was a Clearwater Vita which arrived today and to say it's truly awful in build quality is an understatement so it's all packed up ready to go back.
The last one I bought and kept is a Lanikai LU21 Baritone which I love the deep rich tones of and the next one I will buy will be a nice fully wood (as in no laminate) bodied tenor.

Last uke was a week ago, the humble Makala Mk-C, i set it up myself, was an awful buzzing which was easily fixed once i located the issue, now sounds absolutely gorgeous, so much more comfy to hold than my old soprano too, and i have never seen a fretboard so perfect, not one fret being too high or low, no sharps at all, i am not so sure about the saddle though, im thinking of replacing it.

Next.... my custom build violele mk-II, no need for another uke for a while.

MattHi Matt! The Living Waters sound great - when I got the Kiwaya it had Aquilas on it - I was lucky enough to get it as a used instrument on ebay - someone needed the cash to get a custom. A friend of mine who is a member on here, recently
made himself a Sopranino from koa.It was a lovely
little thing,so I asked him to make me one!
I have played Soprano,Concert,Tenor and Baritone
in my time, and prefer Soprano above all (although I
still own two concerts and one tenor)
On Wednesday 29th May at one of our group meetings,
he brought it along for me.It is a beautifully finished
little beast,and rings like a bell.Early days yet,as the
strings have barely settled in,but so far so good.It is
strung with Aquilas at the moment, but will be swapped
over to Worth Browns soonish (my strings of choice)
So another one in the fold, and thanks to Pete Beardsley
for his creative urges!

The last ukulele I bought was a Willie Wixom pineapple shaped concert.

I don't plan to buy another ukulele for quite a while since I now own 6 and some of them feel left out because I don't play them enough. Also, my wife might be very upset. Her words when I bought the Wixom were, "You don't NEED another ukulele!" Of course, but who really NEEDS a uke?

The picture shows my collection. The WA Wixom long neck concert is in the middle. From bottom clockwise: Eddy Finn banjolele, very thin Kala tenor, Kala soprano - my first one bought 3 years ago in Hawaii, Ibanez concert, Fender tenor.

I can proudly say that it has been long enough since I've purchased an ukulele that I had to think for a bit about which was the most recent acquisition (pretty sure it was my Pono baritone).

I even resisted temptation whilst visiting uke-mecca (Mainland Uke's shop during UWC) and two other visits to retail stores with a pretty good selection of ukes.

I'm so proud of myself (we won't mention that I have two of everything, already)... LOL

All that said, I am about to fall off the wagon some time in the next few months when I find the right "last tenor I'll ever need to buy."

Last uke I bought was an Eastman concert. Fabulous uke, I can't believe there isn't more discussion on these. The kind of sweet mahogany uke that Martin doesn't seem to make anymore.

Next uke? Well, I'm really in selling mode, but I sure could use a resonator....

Last: 3 Lanikai LU21-T's. Two as gifts, one for a low-g strung for me. Not too sure how I feel about the LU21-T though. Rather bulky compared to the Kala SMHT I normally play.

Next: Hopefully one of the hollow body electrics. Still trying to convince the rents it's a good present for Christmas.

Most recent: Compass Rose mini-jumbo mahogany tenor from The Blue Guitar
Next: My Mya-Moe mahogany six-string baritone will be finished on Wednesday April 3.

I got my Mya Moe six-string baritone (#1013) and, just today, a Pepe Romero Tiny Tenor from HMS. (I also got some Makala sharks and dolphins that I'll be donating to one of those organization that collects holiday toys for poor children.) Next up is baritone steel string Compass Rose, which is, I believe, now being finished. I'm working on getting another custom baritone and I'm in the process of arranging for a custom tenor guitar.

It would be fun to see updates from other people who've already posted in this thread. I mean, how often to we get to quote outselves? :)

It's the saving up I cannot abide. I know it's not just me, but I actually can't do it. So if I did get another after my fluke arrives, I think it would have to be an Outdoor Ukulele. I'm not a figure-8 fan, but those things are just cool. And so's the price. :)

So, Michael Zuch is making a tenor uke for me. We talked; I wanted a slot-headstock, and low-G. But past that? Luthier's choice.

Here's what we came up with:

Back & Sides: Tulip Magnolia
Top: Adirondack spruce
Bracing: Sitka spruce
Neck: Spanish cedar with carbon fiber reinforcement
Neck joint: Mortise and tenon with bolt
Upper bout sound port
Rosette, headstock overlay, end graft and heel cap: Brazilian rosewood
Fretboard and bridge: East Indian rosewood
Bindings: Faux tortoise shell with Bloodwood purfling
Inlays on headstock and fretboard: Mother of pearl
Finish: Nitrocellulose lacquer (over epoxy sealer and pore filler where needed)
Tuners: Grover Sta-Tite for slotted headstock with replacement buttons
Strings: Worth BT-LG Fluorocarbon.

So far, I think it looks terrific, and I expect it to sound terrific, too.

Once I get the Zukulele, I'll do a review and sound sample.

Stay tuned ...

I'm deep into UAS. Since listing earlier here a Hanknn 2 hole and East-Start arch-top (still waiting for it), I sold an Eddie Finn spruce/mahogany, and gifted to my cousin's son a Lanikai monkey pod that cracked. I replaced the monkey pod with a Lanikai zebra wood (coming today), and realized I really liked the spruce/mahogany look so I ordered a Lanikai version (coming Monday). Then just last night I saw a beautiful mandolin style uke (mando-uke, mandolele?) on eBay and bid on it.

I haven't purchased a uke since my custom arrived over a year and a half ago - yes, it's *that* perfect :) But I keep wanting to replace my concert Kamaka with something that projects better, so if I did buy another uke, it would either be a spruce-top Kamaka Ohta-San, a National Resonator, or a spruce-top mahogany concert from Mike DaSilva.

a Maccaferri Islander off of craigslist...it plays ok, has a crack or 2 on the top, which don't affect playability. It plays fine, sounds like plastic, it's from the 50's, fills a space on the wall. Thinking seriously of an Islander MC-4 to fill that space!

A Lanikai Baritone "Gamblers Special" from ebay last month- $42 delivered- slight fret buzz from negative relief- fixed by filing some frets and a slightly higher bridge bone-
their's are a mm or two shorter than most I think-
a really great hollow sweet sounding uke now.

Probably not going to buy anymore ukes- I've got at least one in all four sizes now
but this one freed me up to sand the finish and the top back and side woods of my Rogue Bari-
and I expanded the sound hole greatly- and what an improvement in sound!

Not done on sanding the wood thinner either, but it's got much more volume and resonance already- starting to sound like a more expensive uke.
Wish I'd made a "before" video before I started and I think even on camera the sound difference would be quite apparent.

I'm going to install a friction tuner in the middle and a 5th low A string, just because it has SOOOO much string spacing- so I'll have something unique that's my own creation-

it'll need a new nut, and it looks like I'm going to have to file down and regroove a hacked classical nut I have
the string spacing will be about a string width wider on either side
I originally thought I could just redrill the saddle, but that won't be possible without taking it off- and I'm NOT going that far
so I think I can put some set screws and move the original two middle strings out wider around them
and run a new middle string from the friction tuner and tied onto maybe a small eyelet at the bottom

the saddles are clunky and there's all kinds of room at the bottom especially

Here's the sanded Rogue, next to the Lanikai, and finally those next to an Oscar Schmidt 1/2 size classical
