Dive into season 62 of the Ukulele. The theme is "water" [that's right H2O] Since it's EARTH WEEK [Earth Day is 4-22], I thought it would be swimming to highlight one of our most precious and "taken for granted" resources ,besides you,, the one that makes Earth so rare in our solar system [ and the universe as far as I know]. It's cheap and literally rains from heaven [in most places] , but try to do without it for a few days .
Here's a link to some interesting facts about water.
http://www.gcwsa.com/Facts%20About%20Water.htm

On to the Seasons rules. we have to have a few RULES, we don't want this to devolve into ANARCHY do we? HMMM. ok , THERE ARE NO RULES

EXCEPT:
1. hAVE FUN
2. DON'T TAKE THIS too SERIOUSLY , [see rule 1]
3. iF YOU HAVE TO ASK IF IT'S OK TO : play a song about...,MULTITRACK, include OTHER INSTRUMENTS, overdub, , pay talented people to play with you, etc. ,it's not. Otherwise, [see rule 1.]
4. a UKULELE should be seen and heard ,and please mention the week
5. No posting till Sunday.
6. 1 " official" entry per person,
7. Bonus entries - don't go overboard and make them fresh for week 62
And now,the REAL reason many participate on the seasons [besides the fame and glory],
THE PRIZES.
1. A brand new genuine Pineapple. [ pineapples are mostly water,
see pineapple facTS http://www.kingoffruit.com.au/fun-pineapple-facts.html ,
this one is a Lanikai LU21P, well dried.. [It is marked with a Z,?? [2nd], it was listed as having high action [think
high nut].
The action has been lowered and would make a great beach, river, lake , stream, or bathtub uke.
" These prizes will be awarded by a drawing of the "official "entries names.
2. For those who really want to dive into this, players who are actually on or in the water [in the video]have a chance to win an Oasis humidifier.[notice both prizes are water related]
If you live across the ponds you may pay the extra postage or designate the prizes to someone in the states. It is possible[though unlikely] to win both prizes, howerver greedy that may seem.

I was watching this video last night http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaqO2B_ppRs

When I saw Andy's theme, this is the first one that popped up since it's mostly shot in water. I learned it today and made a video with a blue tint!!...unfortunately, the title of the song is "Moon"!! :wallbash:

Watch the video and you'll see why I posted...totally reminded me of Andy, especially his Season 62 kickoff video!!

The Bodleian library in Oxford, UK has a collection of over 30 000 broadsides. These are the pop songs of their day and date in time from the 16th to the early 20th centuries with most being from the 19th centuries. The songs are mostly words only. A very few have music, a few others specify that the song should be sung to an existing tune.

The song in my video came from a mid 19th century broadside and I found that it would fit to an existing traditional tune. The "action" of the song takes place by water, so fits the theme.

http://youtu.be/L2Br8QQQU-s

If you are prepared to write your own tunes, the Bodleian Library Broadside Collection (http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/ballads/ballads.htm) can be a great source of songs but be prepared to spend time hunting before you find something you can use.

Call this my entry as it looks like I won't get time to do anything else this week.

The Water is Wide
Just managed to get this in before leaving the lighthouse cottage this (Monday) morning. My brother Ivan and his wife Debbie helped out.
We went to the trouble of going to the veranda where there is a view out over the Pacific Ocean looking directly east but the camera exposure just makes it white. There is nothing across this stretch of water til you get to Chile so it certainly is wide.
The rooms in the cottage have wonderful acoustics as the walls are solid cement blocks 40cm wide and it has 12ft (3.6m) ceilings.
The noise you can hear is actually the sound of the surf which we would not have had inside.
My official entry to Season 62.

If you listen again, in v1 she's looking out over water and v2 & v4 both refer to the rose withering on water. So, water is referred to in three of the four verses and my reading of the song is that the girl is stood by water and probably threw the rose she had picked into the water.

Sounds a bit corny put like that :wtf:

Interesting facts about water:
1) it is the only substance found naturally occuring on the surface of the earth in solid, liquid and gaseous state.
2) liquid water is about the most difficult liquid in the world to heat up (and to cool down), which is why it is used as the standard by which the ease with which all other materials can be heated (or cooled). The Specific Heat of (liquid) water is 1.
3) Water was also one of the original bases of the metric system. 1 litre of liquid water weighs 1 kilogram, and 1 millilitre of water occupies 1 cubic centimeter. That's why c.c.'s grams and mills (millilitres) of water are equivalent. 1 calorie was defined as the amount of heat energy required to raise one gram/c.c./millilitre of water through 1 degree centigrade (1 degree Celsius).
4) At sea level, it takes an extra 630 calories/gram to convert liquid water at 100║C to water vapour, whereas it only takes an 80 calories/gram to convert ice at 0║C to liquid water at 0║C. It is because ice melts approximately 8 times more easily than water evaporates that global warming would lead to sea level rises.
5) If it wasn't for liquid water on the surface of the planet, there would be no land. Water in the mud dragged down into subduction zones (where one tectonic plate dips below another) reacts with the basalt produced at the mid-oceanic ridges to create andesite, the building blocks of continents.
6) The extra energy required to make water evaporate (turn from liquid to gas) is known as the latent heat of evaporation. It's latent, meaning hidden, because the heat is only expressed when the water vapour condenses to liquid water (normally in the form of steam, mist fog or clouds, which consist of tiny drops of liquid water suspended in the atmosphere). It is the release of this latent heat of evaporation when warm moist air rises that gives rise to hurricanes, tornados and thunderstorms.
7) Water does not get denser as it gets colder - well it does, but only till it cools to a temperature of 4║C. After that it starts expanding again. That's why when lakes freeze, they freeze from the top down. The bottom of the lake contains, of course, the densest water, but that water will have a temperature of 4║C, while the less dense water at top of the lake will be at a temperature of 0║C. No other liquid has this property. That's why, when other liquids freeze, they freeze all in one go (put some olive oil in your freezer and see what I mean).
There's lot's more interesting facts I could share about water, but those should be enough to make you go "Hmmm" :)
At least it took your minds off the tune!

One further water-related fact, the Earth is the only planet in the Solar system, indeed the only planet that we know of, that has liquid water on its surface.

Astronomers are always talking up the possibility of life on other planets, citing the billions of planets there are probably out there in our galaxy. But if you ask a biologist what are the chances of life actually occurring on an Earth-like planet, they'll tell you it's a billion-to-one. So basically, the odds are about 50-50. Personally, I don't know what's scarier: the possibility that there might be life elsewhere in our galaxy - or that our Earth might be its only home.

The idea for this tune came to me last night as I was *trying* to fall asleep -- in fact, it took me forever to fall asleep because I was so excited about doing this song for this Season, and I was hoping no one would beat me to the punch! ;-) So, here it is! Originally recorded (and written by) Al Green (and Mabon "Teenie" Hodges) in 1974 and then recorded again in 1978 by The Talking Heads -- Take Me To The River! It is a reeallly "ruff" (and rough!) cover -- you'll see why when you watch the first part of my video! Thanks for watching and for a super-fun season, strumsilly! :-)

AA pabrizzer original written this morning.

I, Water

I carry ships
I shape the land
I crack and turn
The rocks to sand

I fill the sea
I block the sun
Within me
Dwell leviathan

I roll down cheeks
To show child's pain
I am raging storm
And gentle rain

I reveal the colours
In sun's light
I paint the tops
Of mountains white

I quench thirst
Feed giant trees
I cradle souls
Who sleep in me

I gouge the earth
With glacier’s tongue
I once was pure
But look what you’ve done

It takes me a while to get official entries to happen, strums... sometimes it never happens. both of my 'would have been offiicials' today turned into bonuses in the execution. They're just too watered down, I suppose.
This one for example, talks about water in a more metaphorical way than a meteorological way...

Ugh- dog sick, but wanting to play. This is not my best of a long series of not so greats, but when I am sick the Ukulele punk rock just pours from me (cue laughter)
This BONUS song is about water, and a beach...and the perils of having "Earth Day" once a year.
I suppose old punk rocker turned environmentalist types ought to be at least happy that we have such a thing as Earth Day, it mostly just makes me cringe...
Apologies to anyone from Marin County California, or anyone who drives a Prius. I bring you the Dead Kennedys, a controversial band of balladeers from my home state, the folk music of a miss-spent youth.

Here's my entry this week. Night Swimming by R.E.M. This was one of the songs that got me into playing ukulele. When I saw and heard Ukulollo play this I was amazed and knew I had to learn it. As a beginner I had no idea what I was doing and after a few frustrating days gave up. I picked it up again this week because of the water theme and was amazed that I could play it now. Shows what the seasons have done for my playing. I wish it was a multi-track week so I could get all of the parts in with a nice vocal, but such is life. Here is the Rhythm with my sketchy vocals. Look for the multi-track coming soon to a Youtube channel near you.

I wasn't sure if would get another video done this week, but I managed it this afternoon. I needed some therapy after being told how much it would cost to fix the damage to my car body after hitting a sheep up on the moors last summer.

I'm sure this will qualify under rules 1 and 2. I had fun doing it and I didn't take it too seriously. I recently got a Risa Stick uke and I dug out an old Radio Shack Reverb/Delay unit and plugged it in. The result was serious damage to a Beatles song.

Thanks Strumsilly for this theme. I have had the first two verses of this song and the chorus (but no melody) in my "Pillow Book" (where I write down all the ideas that I wake up with) for about two years now. Your theme gave me the impetus needed to finally write the elusive third verse which ties the abstract "objective" nature of the first verses into the subjective link with nature of the third.

So here is "Waterfall"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qhskfa-Hurw&feature=youtube_gdata

The Lyrics are in the description on YouTube - Click on "Show More"

Incidentally, does the melody sound familair to anyone? I think I might have unintentionally plagiarised it. (It is highly likely that, if so, it is reminiscent of another of my own songs ;) )- But if anyone recognises the tune, please sing out ;).

I wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't said, but now you put the idea in my head, the melody to your verse* does seem reminiscent to me of Dylan's "Chimes Of Freedom"†

The melody to these lines of yours:

*The brook becomes a stream, becomes a river all too soon,
What trickled through the meadow driven now by earth and moon.
Till it seems nothing could stop you, no man made force at all,

Sounds (to my ears at any rate) a little like the melody to these lyrics:

†Tolling for the aching whose wounds cannot be nursed
For the countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones an' worse
An' for every hung-up person in the whole wide universe

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBIcfPBVxxQ

The melody in this part of your chorus:

Your power taken from you as you slow down to a crawl.
Nothing tames a mighty river like a lofty waterfall.

in its turn sounds reminiscent of another 60s folky tune, but I can't place it at the moment (something by the Seekers?).

It doesn't really matter though. I'm sure that like most of those folkies, Bobby D "borrowed" the melody from somewhere else originally, and "Waterfall" is a lovely song in its own right.

Wanted to let my seasonista friends know that I have been paying for the internet wifi by the minute at internationally acclaimed resort prices and so I have not been able to watch or comment on anyone's videos these last two weeks. This will change in a couple more weeks when I get assigned a teaching assignment here in Thailand and I get set up with a permanent residence. The internet cost is about the only that isn't amazingly awesome about Phuket, Thailand. I recorded this video in Rawai Beach. NSFW in that you probably don't want your co-workers wondering why you're watching a sweaty fat guy playing uke....

Enjoy!

I wanted to try something different; much faster than songs I usually play. Neither the accelerandos nor the ritard were done quite right, but oh well. It was fun.

I have also re-recorded my entry - Berni pointed out that the volume was really low, so I thought I'd spruce it up a bit. So, my original version of 'I'm No Stranger To the Rain' could become a bonus, if that's OK, SS? :)

This was very creative. Song, ukulele playing, puppetering, art work, all cool.
But for a moment I forgot which season I was in, 62nd with water or 61 with muppets. Way to trip me up! LOL

Sorry about the confusion Jazz. I did this one 3 years ago. I'm kind of known for those puppets that always seem to show up right as I'm recording a song. Not sure if this is a good or a bad thing, not that it matters, I'm just having fun!

Thanks! It's actually one of my *son's* favorite songs, but he's three—a bit too big to put in the carrier, but not quite big enough to sit down and sing along through an entire song.

I'm confused, I thought the seasons started Sunday and ran to Sunday [midnight], season 63 has already started, so is there a day overlap?

They run to Sunday Midnight - Hawaiian time, i.e., 12 noon Monday, GMT, 7am Monday EST (take off one hour for daylight savings time). I have no idea when the official start time is though. That's not at all clear in the rules.

pabrizzer

Yes. At least for all the seasons I've been involved in there has been a day overlap.
And they start and end on a Sunday (Midnight Hawaii time).
That gives most Seasonistas TWO Sundays to get an entry in.
So you can start posting after midnight Saturday night Hawaii time but should have your entry in by midnight Sunday night Hawaii time.

Hawaii is actually GMT -10 So deadline is actually.10am GMT Monday (11am BST). Normal practice has been for the new season to start on Sunday morning giving a 1 day overlap.

Still plenty time to get your entries in for this season

Actually, Seasons start at approximately midnight on Saturday in mainland US, with first postings on Sunday.
Then 8 days later, at Sunday midnight in Hawaii, that party's over.

Wherever in the world Seasonistas live, they have the same length of time (8 days) to participate.

Not strictly correct. When people post their seasons contest posts "late" I end up having more of two Mondays. Well I always have 2 Mondays but usually I have the first Sunday afternoon to organise and prepare as well.
In eastern Australia the seasons begin at 8:00pm Sunday night and end at 8:00pm Monday night.

8 days yes - the same 8 days - no.

All of which (useful) discussion bears out my original observation that the rule on when seasons end has always been very clear, but the rule on when they begin, less so. Perhaps the "sticky" could be updated?

AFAIK, it's always been midnight Sunday (or 12.01am, if you like) Hawaii time but there has generally been less need to spell it out compared with the end time.

The time when the new season challenge is posted has always been a little variable. Some people post Saturday evening, others Sunday morning. People who post Saturday night usually remind you not to post entries before Sunday.

Indeed they usually do. The point of unclarity was what exactly was meant by 'before Sunday'. I now know, of course, but didn't before.

Incidentally, I first started worrying about this 3 or 4 seasons ago, and actually went looking through the rules then to find out when a season officially started. With the best will in the world, I couldn't find out.

Not only strumsilly, but also electrauke have been caught out by this in the last few weeks. My suggestion that the "sticky" be updated to avoid future confusion still stands (or maybe the posts in this thread on that subject could simply be moved over there. I don't want to hi-jack this contest any further than I already have).

As the coordinator I do send the instructions to remind people when to post and what the expectations to being a host are
Of course there are the inevitable problems that can occur
Poor ElectraUke got sick at the beginning of his week so posted his week instructions late
Strumsilly, well he got home late after a night of having a ton of fun
he still posted something but restated what his week was in a another video which he liked better.
Stuff happens but the most part everything runs very smoothly
Each week starts on the Saturday night Hawaiian 11.59.59.pm time and ends the following Sunday Hawaiian 11.59.59 pm time
thats how I have always understood it.

Thank goodness we got the deadline cleared up! I'm trying to remember if I've ever posted before the last day.

Here is my entry. I was in the US for a couple weeks and missed "Our Song" week, which was disappointing because I wanted to play my husband's and my wedding song. But fortunately we have more than one song, and one of them works for this theme! Yay! This is "Beyond the Sea," by Charles Trenet and Jack Lawrence, recorded by many people but my favorite version is, of course, Bobby Darin's. I hope you enjoy it!
