Apologies for a lack of introductory video but it was my granddaughter's birthday this week so I'm visiting my daughter in London.

Here in the UK, Spring has been very late coming this year and we have had snow and cold weather much later than usual. The weather has only really started to feel springlike in the last week or so. So I think it's time for some songs about spring. I need cheering up, anyway.

The Challenge

Your song should be about and/or mention spring or one of the spring months; March, April or May. Songs mainly about June, though will not count as entries but do post them as bonuses.

Instrumental entries where the tune title fits the theme are most welcome.

Bonus tracks are encouraged but please show a little restraint in the number of bonuses you post early in the week. Bonuses from your "back catalogue" are welcome.

Multiple versions of the same song are encouraged so if someone beats you to posting the song you were going to do, don't be discouraged, go for it anyway. Earlier seasons have shown we can have several excellent and different versions of the same song.

Terms & Conditions

* Ukulele should be clearly visible in your video somewhere. If you want to include some video of spring at some point, I'd love to see it.
* Overdubbing and multitracking are OK.
* If you're not sure if it's OK, go ahead & do it anyway.
* Mention the "63rd season of the ukulele" somewhere.
* State the title of your song somewhere. I like to know for the playlist.
* Your first video post will count as your entry unless you state otherwise.

Judging

Judging will be by me and my family (if I can persuade them to take part)

Deadline

11:59 PM Hawaii time, Sunday May 5th
That's 11am Monday May 6th BST or 12.00 noon in Western Europe. I don't know what the time will be in Oz, but I'm sure you folks have it worked out.

Prizes

Prizes will really just be token. I have something in mind and will will let you know when I have ordered them.

Of course, March, April & May are spring months only in the Northern Hemisphere - will pabrizzer and other seasonistas down under be allowed to enter autumnal songs? Or ones mentioning August, September and October? ;)

Pabrizzer, that was great. Do you mind sharing the chords for that one? I love the added bits in the instrumental section and the ending run. I know this is "standard" blues stuff but can be hard for us noobs to pick out.

I appreciate that it is Autumn in the southern hemisphere but most of the classic spring songs are about the months mentioned, so we'll stick to the terms in the OP

Hi everyone, I've been off the seasons grid for a few. Sorry about that. Here's a quick phone take of a George Jones song "Take Me" that gets around to "spring in California" towards the end.
It's not till I tried to sing a GJ song that I realized what a singer he was. And what a singer I ain't.
Thanks

Nice tribute to George Jones peewee. I've been working out in my greenhouse all afternoon and listening to the country radio station playing George Jones songs (and songs about George Jones). So it was fun to stop by the Seasons and hear your song.

wow, what's the chance of both of us picking this song, I got the chords down, the

How do you play Fmaj7? 5500? If not, try that shape. It's 2413 played backwards (2413=AEFC, 5500=CFEA).

thanks, I was trying 2413 on a bari, it's not hard on a soprano, but my pinky doesn't like to stretch that far, the downside of the bari I guess. the 5500 is much easier,

Heh, that's great fun!
I think Art has said that about several S&G songs usually after Paul has dismissed a song as being a young unpolished effort when asked about them in interviews. He does seem to favor the ones with the most lyrical melodies, though.

I have to say I cheat most of the time on my Fmaj7 (it had to be you). Fmaj7 is F A C E, and an Amin is A C E so I play an Amin if it sounds fitting. It's an Fmaj7 without the root.

This is Blossom Dearie's "They Say it's Spring"óbut I know it from Erin McKeown's excellent cover. This, though, is my own arrangement, based on Dearie and McKeown. I had to simplify some of the chords to fit my limited skills, and of course, make it sound right for solo uke. This is also my first attempt at a jazz tune on the ukulele!

I found time to record just before heading out to teach my graduate seminar, so that's why I'm overdressed. Not enough time to be productive, but just long enough to sing a song!

Here's the arrangement:

Well, friends, I am apologizing in advance because this song might not achieve the goal of what Geoff was asking us to do -- and if it doesn't, perhaps it can be a bonus entry? The song DOES mention spring -- but it also mentions "winter, (spring!), summer or fall," (Hint hint!), too. As you'll shortly see, this song isn't at all about spring (which is, btw, my most favorite time of year -- and I am also a spring baby!). But, the song is about something that is very special -- and this song is dedicated to all of you! Please enjoy! :-) And, oops, I did forget to mention in my video..."SEASON 63 of Ukulele!"

Last bonus for the week. An original song written for this season sung with my granddaughter (Tuesday is her uke/guitar lesson with me).
If you can spare the little over 3 minutes we did a fast and slower version. This was our 2nd and 3rd take as I messed up the lyrics on our first take which would have been the best.

I was out in some Welsh marshes, bird-watching, at the time. When we came back home the news had broke and we were told we'd been out in the Nuclear Cloud all day! Here is a song I wrote, at the time, in response to the incident:

According to QI*: in the British Isles, Spring travels North at approx 1/3rd of a mile per hour (8 miles/day), but more slowly as it travels uphill, arriving in John O'Groats about 8 weeks after it reaches Lands End. You're about half-way in between, I reckon: so another month to go for you, would you say?

You pretty much confirm what I have always thought as my father and one of my sisters both live in Hampshire so I have travelled between here and the South of England a fair bit over the years.

However, what I was actually trying to say is that the trees are very late coming into leaf this year and that is an indicator of the arrival of spring.

Hey Pa, this is absolutely great. I'm really wrapped in this version, the uke work, the melody and great vocal feeling - what a star.
Thanks David

managed to get in an early entry this week. one from my uke hero, Cliff Edwards and just one of the most feelgood songs I know. couldn't uncover any music for this (if anyone has it could you please let me know?). so, i can't vouch for the authenticity of the chords I used but they kinda work for me. i'll have a free PDF songsheet thingy on my website in the next couple of days if anyone wants to learn my version of it. as winter starts to come a creepin' down here, this is dedicated to you folks in the northern climes... :)

Just an absolute cracker Jon. Fantastic job.
Bit worried about what those youngsters at the end were up to though.
And that makes 3 Aussie insomniacs.

Here's a different April Showers song, by a Seattle indie band, Math and Physics Club.
Funny how you can get an okay take early on, then keep trying to get one as good as how you play it when you're not recording, but it proves to be a waste of time. Here is my okay take.

First Batch of comments. Sorry it's taken longer than I would have liked but I was really too tired last night to do more than get the playlist started.

Pabrizzer - Springtime Blues: Great Blues Number. Loved the blues style.

Peewee - Take Moi: This one has a Bluesy feel to it too. Well done. Much better than you give yourself credit for.

Patricia PDX - April Love: I can remember this. Great choice, Patricia and good version.

Jazzbanjorex - Springtime in Alaska: I remember North to Alaska and this song has the same feel. I thought you sang this well and captured the feel of the song.

Redpaul1 - April Showers: Definitely a different take on this song. An interesting interpretation.

SuperPilotSP - March into April: Loved it. Really made me smile.

Strumsilly - Here comes the Sun: Good choice. Very appropriate this year. It really does seem like years! Great strum on the uke. It has a good tone.

Xommen - March, April, May: Another good choice. I assume Wouter Hamel is Dutch. Liked your version.

Dwitt - They Say it's Spring: I liked this very much. You captured that jazzy feel really well. I liked your ending with those crunchy chords.

I'll try to catch up with the bonus tracks and add comments on You Tube.

Meantime, now to add a new batch of entries to the playlist. I see they're coming in thick and fast which is great.

I think I'm now up to date with the playlists and I have managed to listen to all the entries and bonuses to date. Here are more comments on the entries. As with the previous post, comments on the bonuses are on You Tube.

Filipinouker - Birds and the Bees: Really liked that. A happy song and your smile is infectious. How can anyone not enjoy this.

Hochapeafarm - You've got a Friend: Spring gets a mention, so OK as far as I'm concerned. Anyway, I'd hate to exclude such a good interpretation of this song.

Barbablanca - Cloud of Silence: A powerful song, Berni. You captured the essence of the disaster that was Chernobyl.

Eugene Ukulele - I'm Tellin' the Birds, I'm Tellin' the Bees: Well up to your usual standard, Jon. That Bruko uke sounded great. I've just got a Bruko, myself for which you have some measure of blame as I watched your review of a Bruko. When I saw they had a rosewood concert in their online shop, I just had to go for it.

uke4ia - Staines Morris: Not your usual choice of song. Good version, though. Maybe revenge for my recent electric efforts.

GinnyT11 - April Showers: Nice one. A different choice from the usual song of that name.

The Ukelites - It might as well be spring: Excellent as usual. I liked the accompaniment and the spring background.

Plenty excellent entries. It's going to be very difficult to sort out some winners. I may have to resort to drawing out of a hat.

If I've missed your entry or bonus off the playlist or have a song in the wrong playlist, please let me know.

Here in WA state the Tulip Festivals in spring are a huge thing. So the theme made me think of this silly song made famous by the artist Tiny Tim.

Also, I have never made a video before and I don't really know this song. It has a bunch of chords a don't know and that is why the song is really choppy. Anyway, here is my first ever submission.

Here's my entry for the 63rd Season... Springtime!
I decided to write an original song from scratch this week. Spring was SO late in the UK this year and we've recently had the WORST snow we've had for decades. So I thought that would make a good topic and I wrote this fun little song. I added some backing vocals, a Stylophone solo (told you I would Pabrizzer!) and a soupÁon of reverb. Hope you like it!

http://youtu.be/cYOsKq3rqns

p.s.
Youtube has knocked the AV sync off slightly... sorry about that.

Here are the lyrics...
The daffodils they tried to grow
But got crushed by 10 feet of snow
Springtime has left us out this year

The birds found when they tried to nest
They all still needed wooly vests
Springtime has left us out this year

The snow was coming down in April
The sun was just a long lost friend
Swallows forgotten what they came for
This stubborn Winter just refused to end

Well there's no blossom in the trees
No butterflies or buzzing bees
Springtime has left us out this year

But now it's May and winter's left
It must be thanks to Tootlin' Geoff
Springtime has finally come this year

I loved this, Mike, because of the cleverness of the lyrics AND the cleverness in your video! The Stylophone was pretty cool, and I liked that when it's spring, life becomes colorful.

It's still very cool here in the mid-Atlantic states, and I saw today that a May snowstorm is headed for the upper Midwest. Unbelieveable.

4thmonth - Tiptoe through the Tulips: Welcome to the seasons. A good choice of song. That was very brave of you to try something out of your comfort zone for your first video and well done for sticking with it even when things didn't go too well. It gets easier in time, but you'll still find you'll need to do multiple takes.

Mikef - Springtime has missed us out this year: Too true. I think you had it worse than we did on the East coast. Good song that really captured the lack of spring this year. Liked the Stylophone instrumental break. It reminded me of the Tornadoes and that early 60s sound.

I had no particular plans for a bonus this week but I got a new Brűko Rosewood concert uke. When I put piccy's on Uke Talk there were several requests for a sound sample so I recorded two songs this afternoon.

Green Bushes is a re-recording of a song I did for Week 30 (outdoor week). The action takes place in the spring. It fits the theme so I am posting it here.

I think we can take a fairly liberal view of what is a spring song as long as it has a spring like feeling. Weather in Vermont looks pretty good just now. We have had much better weather recently. Proper spring. It's just that everything is running a month late. Anyway good song well sung.

Your Bones, by Of Monsters and Men. It's a pretty dark song for spring, but here in Wisconsin, we have had barely any spring to speak of, and in fact, in the northern part of the state, they are getting record snowfall this week. So some Icelandic alternative neo-folk seemed like a good place to start.

Everyone has made some fantastic submissions! It's good to have some Springy songs, since Spring seems delayed all over! It's hard to feel like May when it's 45 degrees outside! Thanks for the sunshine, everyone!

38 degrees (3C) and snowing here. Snowing! On May 4th! Where oh where is our spring?? I was hoping to plant my peas today :(

OK this ones not for the faint hearted - be warned!

Inspired by the fact it's raining this morning after such a lovely day yesterday, by Mike F's great original lyric and Jon's wonderful ragtime style, I wrote this!

It is my first bonus entry - and you may hope my last!

Love your song bbbannister. But I'm complaining!! I never thought I'd say it...but I'm tired of snow. I've put my snowshoes and skis away already. And took the snow tires off the car last week. I awoke to a blizzard today. Tulips, crocuses, green grass is what we want - not more snow. I want some sunshine!! And warm weather. (complain complain complain)

Back in the early 90s, I was a member of the the Seattle record label Sub Pop's "Singles Club"---each month, a new 7" Sub Pop single would arrive in my mail. This sad, spring song is the B-side of a single by Codeine that was delivered in July 1992. It'd been a lonely spring that year, and I loved this song immediately. Thanks, Geoff, for a great theme, which reminded me of this song and those times.

Seems that spring is late everywhere and winter is having a late fling. The gods are clearly displeased with us all this year. Although the weather has been better here recently, it has not been warm. There is a definite nip in the air. Still we shouldn't complain. Others are getting it worse than us.

OTOH. We would not be truly British If we didn't complain about the weather :wallbash:

Here we go.

That was really good, Matty. Great lyric and great accompaniment. I loved it.

We're having a cold rainy spring so far. Hoping for sunshine soon. Anyway - here's my entry for this week.

An instrumental tone poem: Equinoxe Pt. 1 by Jean-Michel Jarre.

To evoke the thunder and rains of Spring bringing forth new life, he used synthesizers.
I gave it a go in GarageBand with uke and u-bass.

Hi everybody! It's been a rough week -- my back has been bothering me all week, and I haven't been able to play for most of the week (actually singing is even harder than playing, as it is difficult to breathe). Which of course made me so miserable I couldn't even watch anybody else's videos. Finally I couldn't stand it any more so I did this little thing, short and way, waaaaaay under-rehearsed. Just really wanted to get an entry in this week. I hope you enjoy it!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kghDA0TeRes&feature=youtu.be

Unfortunately I was unable to shoot this outside, as the overhang on our balcony caused too much backlighting, but the birds are going crazy and there are, indeed, apple blossoms in the field behind our building! Yay, spring!

An entry is missing this week from me as my dad has just passed away after a long illness. I am now without parents as my mum also passed away only 14 months ago. My main solace apart from my family is music; so the seasons continue to help put a much-needed smile on my face. Never underestimate the power of music. I didnít get my love of music from dad as he wasnít really into music that much but I wanted to at least enter a bonus as a dedication to him as he was both born in the Spring and passed away in the Spring so I felt it appropriate to put something in even though the song itself is more about summertime. So this is just my own little tribute to him really with a beautiful song although my interpretation doesn't really do it justice.

Sounds like you have a few problems, though I'm sure things will sort themselves out eventually. My brother in law was a geologist and he and his family spent time in Thailand - in the rural north. A song about spring that starts by stating it's late September? Seems to be stretching it a bit. However it was a good performance and I have already stretched a point with some other songs this week, so I reckon it can stand as an entry. Our Roddie also seems to be quite good and getting wives but not so good at keeping them; a characteristic he shares with my Brother who is about to embark on his fourth marriage.
