I think it is so important to find the right key that matches your own voice. When I find a song that I like I might spend a day or two figuring out what key I actually sing it in before I learn the chords and picking. Nothing worse than sounding like a frog on the first part of a song then switching to a mouse voice cause it the wrong key for U.

When I get a request for a song, but no key (also no song sheet), I quickly try to hum through the melody to locate the lowest and highest tones/pitches then I work with the uke and try to locate an appropriate key... for me. Hey if I'm leading the song, I need to feel confident without the fear of injuring my voice :) If the song is already in a low or high key on a song sheet, I work with it as much as I can... without injuring my voice, if possible.

Those spontaneous requests require a bit of preparation... or nobody's happy.
