I had put it as an auto-record on our DVR, after my cousin in Hawaii told me about the PBS special a while back. I just noticed tonight that it's scheduled to record. Sa-weet! I'm looking forward to seeing it.

In post #5, Kanaka916 posted a link for preordering the DVD at the PBS store (http://www.shoppbs.org/product/index.jsp?productId=20571686&cp=&kw=life+on+four+strings&origkw=life+on+four+strings&sr=1) (release date June 14) and the email I received from MPT says that there is a chance that the program will be streamed online at pbs.org a day or to after it is broadcast. Don't know if it will be available for streaming in Europe.

Raygf,
Thanks for the tip on the other two shows!

I thought I spotted Jake talking to Kid Rock at a party last night but he was lost in the crowd.
Had my fingers crossed for an impromptu performance but it didn't happen.

Can't wait to see the PBS show, but im still out of town.
did anyone see it?

Damn, I'm such an easy mark...

What's the name of the piece toward the end that he was playing on piano? It's the one when he explained the range of the Ukulele as it related to the piano.

I've heard it played before but I just can't recall the name.

I love Japan as well. The 3-11 portion showed some of the devastation. Very sad.
I will never forget the first time I watched this video about it.

I saw the Cryril Pahinui slack key special..if it is the same one where they do his dads "Gabby" music it may be one of the best programs they ever had...for Hawaiian music..way up there with the Brothers Cazimero's special they showed last month on PBS Hawaii..

they are playing outside on someones lanai(patio) and the sound is spectacular..and don't worry Peter Moon Jr. is playing the
ukulele..if you never saw him here is your chance,,one of the best from the Islands..he does not want to steal the show from all the legends that show up..Don't miss it..Wow

please pass the word around about this special..you are all going to be Peter Monn Jr. fans after you see him..he stands in the back of all the legends but all you uke lovers will see him...Haha

Just finished watching "life on four strings". The Sendai portion was really powerful and heartbreaking.

I haven't seen that video you linked before. I'm not sure I can make it through the whole thing. When I was in Japan on my first strip I went to The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake Memorial Museum (http://museumchick.com/2011/01/hanshin-awaji-earthquake-museum-kobe-japan.html). If you go back to Japan, I really recommend paying it a visit.

(sorry for that brief sidetrack)

+1 on just about everything everybody has said. Seriously, embarrassingly a fanboy right now. So impressed by his work ethic, his off-stage humility, and his understanding of those who support him.

The first I knew of Jake was the TED Youtube of "Bohemian Rhapsody." Completely changed my mind about ukulele. That planted the seed which sprouted last August.

+1 on this. He really impressed me in a way I didn't expect. His style of ukulele isn't what I am usually drawn to, but he is an incredible artist and seems like an even more incredible person.

I really liked it too. Seemed like it almost weighed in a bit too much on the "Behind The Music" style overcoming obstacles, but it didn't bother me in the end. I liked seeing the interactions between him and Bruce. And here are the two of them playing in the 2011 Ukulele Festival in Kapiolani Park - magical!

Saw it tonight with my family.Did not hear a peep from anybody. It was very inspiring to see how the family survived the obstacles in early life with hard work and determination to build a better life for themselves and then how Jake is spreading joy around the world with his music. The wife and me and one son were very fortunate to see him perform live here in New Brunswick Canada in Oct 2005.Mahalo Jake.

I saw Jake playing at the Ukulele Festival in Honolulu in 2011. He talked about how you don't have to be a virtuoso to take your love of muic and use it in hatever you did in your life. Very cool - so maybe you are there already dawg.

Why you asking us for advice when you have a professional musician in the family? He'll know much more than us.
