1933. lyrics Johnny Mercer; music Hoagy Carmichael

Fabulous song I learnt this afternoon. Beautiful chords, perfect melody, sweet lyrics: everything that was great about the Tin Pan Alley stuff

Played on a uke that was built around the same time this tune was written: a Wendell Hall redhead mahogany soprano. It's got cracks everywhere, broken violin tuning pegs, a twisted neck and is battered and bruised but still sounds nice to me.

You might have noticed I'm sporting my brand new Captain Lovehandles t-shirt. The guy is a cartooning genius. You can see more of his stuff here:

I have a free PDF songsheet of this song available for download on my website, complete with chords and lyrics if you'd like to learn it too:

Thanks for watching folks! :)

Super job, Jon. My Dad used to sing that one to me.... but mainly as a reproach to my idleness, rather than for fun ;)

Very nostalgic. I knew when I saw the title I had to listen Haven't thought of that song for years and years. Great rendition!

hey Dave, thanks mate. Yeah the teaching has been fantastic so far, I've loved every second of it. Some good things happening with the uke there too, happened very fast and looks like I'll be using it with some of the special needs kids way sooner than I even hoped for. Hope you and Jen are well too brother, have a good week

That song is so very beautiful, and your version is fine indeed.
Check out the one by Paul Robeson too. Sublime, exquisite stuff.

Thanks for the comment doc. I took your advice and listened to Paul Robeson...wow. He makes the hair on the back of my neck stand to attention every time.

And you're lucky, your uke is already in tune when you wake up.

ha ha Berni...yeah mate, me and Fi have been joking that Johnny Mercer had chapter 3 of 2nd Thessalonians on his mind when he wrote these lyrics. :)

How lovely that your dad used to sing to you, that's a pretty precious memory.
