View Full Version : Season 66: Gabba Gabba Hey!

TheOnlyUkeThatMatters
05-18-2013, 03:54 PM
May 19 is a special day for lovers of rock and roll. It's the day we say, "Happy birthday, Joey Ramone!"

The Ramones are one the best bands in rock history, but somehow, they never achieved mainstream success. Their fiery brand of rock and roll did, however, touch hearts and souls (and crush eardrums) around the world for over twenty years. To celebrate Joey's birthday this week, we'll be playing the music of the Ramones! Gabba gabba hey!!

To make this Season a real challenge for everyone, there are a couple of special

RULES

(1) NO REPEATS AMONG ENTRIES!

Your song choice cannot repeat any other participant's song choice. Ramones songs aren't complicated---that's part of their appeal---so no reason to have more than one entry for any given song. If a fellow Seasonista plays your favorite Ramones song, learn another one! But don't worry, you will not have learned your favorite Ramones song in vain, since

(2) BONUS TRACKS MUST BE REPEATS!

Bonus tracks must be songs already submitted as entries (or bonus tracks). Hearing more than one take on a great song is always fun. If you like another participant's entry (or bonus track), let that serve as inspiration to play it (and share it) yourself.

ENTRY GUIDELINES

Your entry must feature you playing a song by the Ramones on your uke, posted to this thread no later than 11:59 pm (Hawaii time) Sunday, May 26th.
In your video, say (or use titles to say) "This is my entry for the 66th Season of the Ukulele" (or any words to that effect).
Your video must be one continuous take (both video and audio---no edits, no multi-tracking).
Your ukulele must be front and center---feel free to have friends, family, or machines accompany you on any instruments they'd like to play.

JUDGING

My wife Jessica, who suffered possibly life-long hearing damage after seeing the Ramones in the 90s, and I will be judging using the following criteria:

playing
singing (or melody for an instrumental entry)
performance (personality, attitude, creative approach to arrangement)
setting (Converse All-Stars, blue jeans, and leather jackets can't hurt)
je ne sais quoi (that special CBGB & OMFUG something)

Playing and singing won't be judged for technical quality, but will be judged for communication quality---how well your uke and your voice communicate your personality to our ears.

PRIZES

The 1st place winner get her or his choice of

a Ramones Anthology double CD
a CBGB and OMFUG t-shirt

2nd place winner gets the remaining prize.

PLAYLISTS

OFFICIAL ENTRIES (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2xGE5eN6diGan_DafX1BHNLs3Ku66EkZ)
BONUS TRACKS (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2xGE5eN6diGuzkxHd-OLcdhldsZ_1Dku)

I'll hold off on individual comments until the end of the week, then I'll post a chrimess-style comment video with some love for every entry when I announce the winners.

RESOURCE

peewee kindly posted this link to tabs of ALL the Ramones songs (http://hem.passagen.se/ak5/ramones/). (Also downloadable as .crd files, which open in TextEdit on a Mac).

oh my god oh my god oh my god oh my god
I love you Ralf.
I have never loved a band like I love the Ramones...
Brace yourself folks, this is going to be a long week of enduring the Cloverdale Kid.
You know, we had a qualifier on our marriage. My wife had to see the RAMONES once before I would marry her. She is a trooper.
Gabba Gabba we accept you

Since the only Ramones songs I think I've ever knowingly heard are "Rock n' Roll High School" and "Rockaway Beach", I look forward to watching this season - especially since my friends TCK and Fitncrafty are both HUGE Ramones fans.

I think they made the scene when I was a DJ in West Virginia... I worked at a Top Forty Station when "Saturday Night Fever" and "You Light Up My Life" dominated the airwaves...

And I took refuge from disco by listening to Folk Music, Country Music, Country Rock, and Jazz.

So I missed he Ramones.

(But I found Ann and Nancy Wilson, 38 Special, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Doctor Hook's Traveling Medicine Show, Hubert Laws, Bob James, Nat Adderly, Tom T. Hall, Bobby Bare, [BOTH]The Outlaws, Waylon & Willie... and many others.)

Time to get re-educated.

First posted Ramones vid! I wanted to get my song in early this week since there's only one version of each song allowed for official entries. This is Needles and Pins (written by Jack Nitzsche and Sonny Bono) which the Ramones covered on their 1978 album Road to Ruin.

http://youtu.be/xvObPzlymck
It's rather rough - I didn't practice it as much as I should have...

Yes it's pretty easy for me to post right on the deadline because it is only 8:00pm on Sunday evening here in Oz.
I did go so close to doing Needles and Pins - had the chords done and did a few run throughs but went with Tom Waits song instead.
I only know of the Ramones from the little I have seen doing research here to find a song.

Oh Ralf, youíve really laid down the gauntlet with this one. NO REPEAT entries. Well Iíve managed to download the chords and learn this and upload within 2 hours so its VERY raw but hey Iím sure that was part of your devious plan. So here is my very poor rendition of ďI wanna be sedatedĒ before anyone else enters it although I must admit, I was thinking of renaming it "Ralf is a sadist" but it doesnít quite have the same ring to it. Can I also confirm that no drugs were harmed in the making of this video. Also as I cannot read the lyrics without my glasses I had to fit my cool looking sunglasses over the top of my specs. Iím sure you canít notice though ;-)
This is gonna be a fun theme this week.

I had to do this one as it has been covered by U2, I used my Les Paul and Honytone to make some noise. It seems the song was written after seeing a mother chasing a child with a baseball bat.

I was never much into punk though I did sympathise with the principle of going back to a simpler style of music, just didn't much like the results. In addition, I've had a bit of a flare up of RSI in my right elbow that I originally had about 10 years ago so I'm going to take a rest this week and see how my elbow goes at the end of the week.

Here is my entry- a cover of "California Sun." As soon as I read this week's theme/rules I knew this was the song I wanted to do and I'm so glad nobody beat me to it yet! Did it on one of my electric ukes. It was fun playing around and using more overdrive than I normally would. This was my second take, which is already double my one-and-done policy. I played much better on the first one but you couldnt hear me singing (probably a good thing, haha.) Some clumsy picking and a little pick noise because I had to turn the amp down instead of the mic up. I would've liked to just crank it, but it was 6:00 when I recorded it and I didnt want to get the neighbors after me!
This is a great theme. It's kind of fun uking under pressure like this to get a song done and uploaded before someone else beats me to it!

Ramones on uke, I love the Seasons!

My entry is from their penultimate record Acid Eaters, which was covers of 60's songs.

This tune is from the soundtrack of the movie Wild In The Streets, which came out 45 years ago next week.

It was the ultimate teenage exploitation movie and satire. The plot was that the voting age got lowered to 15, kids took over the world, and put everybody over 30 into concentration camps.

Absurd? I was 14 and a half at the time, seeing boys a few years older drafted and marched off to the Viet Nam war.
Bobby Kennedy, who the Hal Holbrook character in the movie was based on, was assassinated the week after the film was released in the summer of '68.

The songwriters were the great Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.
Max Frost and the Troopers were a fictional band (Richard Pryor played the drummer), but the song went to #22 on the charts.

After making everyone play the same song in the 33rd Season (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2xGE5eN6diFzGgCmecycW9mtDRarrd67), I thought it'd be fun to force everyone to play a different song. I didn't think about how that'd affect the pace of entries; it is a blast to see and hear all these great Ramones songs (and songs the Ramones loved and played) on Joey's birthday! Viva las Seasonistas!!!

Plus now that many of the "hits" have been submitted... the wave of bonus tracks can begin!

Best song of the week so far for me. Coherent story line - non repetitive lyrics - and a good job DW.
May attempt a cover later in the week.
The best thing I have discovered about the Ramones' songs so far is that they are SHORT.

On the "baseball bat to a brat" song there is a joke here in Australia about the use of a BASEBALL bat to do such things. Such an unAustralian thing to do we say because we would use a cricket bat.

Don't think I will submit an entry this week, but can contribute a memory of the Ramones. I lived on the Lower East Side from 77 to 80, so I used to see them around quite a bit. (I lived in an incredibly crummy apartment right underneath David Peel, if you all remember him.)

But my favorite memory of the Ramones was in Detroit. I was there with my family for a wedding, and we went down to the hotel restaurant for lunch. Don't know how or why, but the band was also there. So I got to have an indelible picture of my Dad (not anywhere near a cool guy) standing next to Joey at the salad bar. Now that was culture shock, to say the least.

We are doing bonuses for each other... whatever next... a duet

Nice laid back DOO-WAP stylings. I like the discongruity of the soft song
combined with the leather jacket and shades. I also see you have your hat
on backwards. THis is a good sign.

In all the Rambo movies when Sly is meek and mild farming out in the
countryside he wears the peak of is baseball hat pointing forward. THen when
he turns the peak so it is facing backwards it is as though he has just turned
on the nasty switch... yeah hats are really switches and you can judge whether
or not you are going to get you ass kicked, by looking at which way the peak is pointing.

At least that is my theory, and I bet there are many movies to prove it.

Geoff I slept through the 70's and missed the whole punk era.
Punk is a musical black hole for me.

We had three children and lost one during the seventies so I didn't really have my eye on the music either. My wife had a pretty dreadful time during her pregnancies with high blood pressure. I do remember the anti style dress code and the big spiky hairdos, though. I came to in the eighties after we moved to Middlesbrough.

My elbow really is playing up, though so it's a good excuse to rest it for a week and see how things go. I am off to Durham in an hour's time to play in a folk session. I will mostly be playing harmonica, though - plus a bit of flute, so less stress on the elbow.

Some real good playing on this one WGY - you have really given it your own feel.
It was a song I was familiar with which is why I did a bonus.

Hadn't heard Dave Waves song before but really liked his take on it and the other versions I saw on YouTube so that was a new song for me and a reason for my second bonus.

Had a go at the band thing when I was in high school - probably 1971 or 1972.
I guess our style would have best been called "crap".

Geoff I slept through the 70's and missed the whole punk era.
Punk is a musical black hole for me.

I thought I was too old for punk, by about 18 months, because my brother, who is 18 months younger than me, and effortlessly cool, had got into it straight from the get-go. In fact, I'm just two months and 4 days older than Mick Jones, and two-and-half years younger than Joe. I didn't get into it until I moved to Canada in 1978: Vancouver, B.C., to be precise.

The only thing more depressing about Vancouver than everyone telling me that I should be used to the rain, coming from England (heads-up everyone! Annual rainfall in London <30"/pa. Paris ~39"/pa. NYC ~43"/pa. Downtown Vancouver ~82"/pa. North Vancouver ~96"/pa. - IT'S NOT THAT RAINY IN LONDON!), was the music. Every. bloody. station pumping out West Coast 5-part harmony soft rock. My ears were getting diabetes from all the sugary pap being poured into them. To this day, I bear a grudge against the Eagles & Fleetwood Mac (post Peter Green, natch).

So that's when I realised just how much punk had seeped into my veins. And now 35-years-on, I'm back in London, and playing in a ukulele-based punk rock covers band: "The only covers band that matters" as one reviewer kindly dubbed us. We played the legendary 100 Club earlier this month; and we've played every iconic punk rock venue left in London - the Hope & Anchor, Islington, home of Stiff Records; the Dublin Castle, home of Madness; the Borderline in Soho; and the 12-Bar Club in Denmark Street.
This Friday, we're actually headlining at the Dublin Castle!

This is a bonus because erivel(?) was quick. No worries, hope you enjoy my second video in the Seasons.

Teenage Lobotomy has been transposed down a whole step and as such can be played entirely in the first position. Will share the efforts in the song sharing forum. This can be played entirely in the first position, because that's where I'm at. :)

Amazing how much a person can learn with the camera pointed back at yourself. Getting passed the "it has to be perfect" stage, more concerned with delivering something within a certain time frame. ... So glad this opportunity is available, thanks!

Hahaha- wait till the more obscure ones come out Ralf...
I have scheduled for this, and will be bombarding I am sure.
When I heard Johnny had died, I wrote Bill Griffith to see if I could commission a drawing of Zippy crying over the graves of Johnny, Joey and Dee Dee. I offered him any amount of cash for what would take him a few minutes, and was pleasantly surprised by his response...not.
Oh well. For me, this all goes back to 1979 when my mom thought Rock and Roll High School would be a good movie for the kids and bought it. My sis always loved Grease (hate it) and I...well, I spent every night thumping out that classic Tommy Ramone beat on whatever I could find. I am pretty sure my mom hated the RAMONES after that, but I went on to see them constantly, and throughout my life (I had to wait till I was fifteen to sneak out to a show...1987. Saw every one in California until '96 after that). I saw their last tour with my wife, who dodged a bullet. I told her I could not marry a girl who had not seen the RAMONES.
Yeah- I am sick.
I am patiently awaiting:

She's the one (our wedding procession song)
Palisades Park
Wart Hog
Chasing the Night

and the one I will do Sunday whether it gets done or not (I am that Punk)- Danny Says

I love seeing all the versions. And I really hope that some of you seasonistas who are reluctant to dive in do so anyway. The Ramones are in large part about speed noise and absurdity, but there's also an undercurrent of girl group romanticism, and some really catchy hooks. If Tootler hadn't played the injury card, I'd be leaning on him in a big way to give us a folk rendition!

Oh and please don't touch my tune!

Jeez, you guys have young parents! My mom was into Patsy Cline. My dad was into Glenn Miller.

I never really got into the Ramones, though I always appreciated what they did. Loved what I remember hearing from their Acid Eaters album, but it seems like doing covers of songs they covered is kinda cheating. (I felt the same way during Metallica week.) Not sure I'll have time to work something up this week, but if I did, it would be "It's Not My Place (In the 9 to 5 World)", since they namecheck my all-time favorite DJ, Vin Scelsa.

Ha!
My mom was no spring chicken. Her 60s discoveries came late in life. She was allergic to early rock and doo wop, she was too old for it, and too much of a nerdy intellectual, but she introduced me to Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie, as well as Tom Lehrer and Spike Jones...she would continually try to convince me that opera was just like Heavy Metal, and then I would have to explain that I wasn't really into heavy metal...

So, last night after I watched all these videos, I took a little walk. It was after dark.
I ended up a place in New Jersey where there once stood a vast amusement park, and now...high rise apartments. Sitting on a bench were these two old fellows (73 and 83...seems old to me) and they were mulling over a piece of music. I looked around and saw only these two...so much for the girls.
They showed it too me, I pulled out my trusty Martin and laid down the song.
Fortunately I didn't get the Gong- seems they were amused.
This is a Chuck Barris/Freddie Cannon song the RAMONES (and Glass) happened to do.

What a wonderful band The Ramones' were. Classic wind tunnel stance... you stood like a colossus straddling a mighty divide.
This is the preferred mode of standing for punk guitarists. However for the punk
vocalist the stance is quite different... one leg forward, slightly bent at the knee
and one leg trailing backwards stiff as a poker... the mythical Sisyphus pose, which
I see you sneaked in at the end there for a short period.

Good choice of trousers... accidents can happen with tight trousers when you are trying
to emulate extreme punk poses ;)

I'm going out of town tomorrow and likely won't get time alone to record, plus there's the crazy get it while you can rule, so here's my entry, here on a Wednesday!

I didn't know this song until I found it trawling that awesome link peewee posted. But I love it. I may end up doing a bonus of this song because I had trouble deciding what style to play it in. I love how clever the chorus is, so I went with some noise.

Ralf -- I really wanted to wear my CBGB OMFUG shirt, but it just fits way too large to do justice to those kids' punk rock style. So I broke out the underground silkscreened Lou Reed T. And you can't tell because the camera angle didn't quite get it, but I am wearing chucks.

Anyway. I hope to get a chance to record a bonus with some friends this weekend...

By popular demand!

Presenting my assignment at unplugthewood: krabbers had tweeted me around 5:00pm* on Tuesday, suggesting I covered a Ramone's tune that night at his open mic jam; which, great fun as it is, is about 2 hours away from where I live. So I'd had one go at this in the carpark outside before getting up to the mic, & I don't think I really got into it until the 2nd go around. I'd been jabbering on about Lucinda Williams coming to town immediately prior to launching into this, provoking the ire of one of the audience; hence the "this one's only two minutes long" at the start instead of "one, two, three, four"! Anyway, enough excuses. On with the motley!

Anyway, I wasn't going to post this week either but I thought to myself: "what is music for if not to pick you up when you're feeling down?!" And I'm really glad I did. Terrific week so far, Seasonistas! So many amazing versions of so many great songs---y'all never cease to surprise, amaze, and delight!

If you're having trouble with this week's challenge, try this:

Visit the Complete Ramones Guitar Tabs (http://hem.passagen.se/ak5/ramones/) (links to lead sheets with lyrics and chord names that work great for uke, too) and pick out the song title that most appeals to you.
Check out the Ramones' version on youtube.
Change the tempo, the style, and the key as necessary to make the song comfortable for you to play and sing---you'll be pleasantly surprised how well a Ramones song will work for you.
Record and submit your song!
Once you're done with steps 1 through 4, you can tell your friends that you're a punk rocker. (Actually, as a Seasonista, you're already pretty punk.)

Don't know if you ever heard of The Stems or not? Indie Aussie band from late 80's...super. Warm and fuzzy, jangly guitars, harmonies, yep you get the idea. record they put out that still gets played in our house is 'At First Sight Vio9lets Are Blue'...reckon you might like em mate

My first attempt at mixing music. I recorded Pabrizzer's soundtrack and layered an Eleuke melody line (sort of), a low G Luna strum, then my Kala Bass. Then I played the video and sang along for I did not know how to add a vocal to the soundtrack. Hope you enjoy (:

I really didn't think I'd have time to learn this one, and I did't quite, so I cheated here and there with the chords and almost lost it at the end, but I think I still got the essence of the song. As I mentioned before, Vin Scelsa (host of the long-running free-form radio show "Idiot's Delight (http://wfuv.org/programs/idiotsdelight)" and an early supporter of the Ramones) is my all-time favorite DJ, and I know he was thrilled to be name-checked in a Ramones song.

Hey, rockers! Too busy this weekend to make a critique video. I LOVE every entry, and I'll get the video together as soon as possible (likely near the end of the month, considering my work responsibilities). Of course, y'all shouldn't have to wait that long to know the winners.

My intelligent, musically-discerning wife, Jessica, and I spent an evening rocking out with your amazing performances, assigning scores (4 excellent, 3 good, 2 average, 1 fair, 0 poor) for each of the judging criteria, then averaged the values for each Seasonista's score. The winner came out ahead by only one tenth of a point (the top 17 scores were separated by only 0.7 points) and we have a tie for second place. Your winners:

1st place: xommen Ramone
2nd place: peewee Ramone
3rd place: mattydee Ramone

As you might've guessed, the tie-breaker was "hit self on head with ukulele". A terrific book, May Singhi Breen's "Collection of Ukulele Solos", will serve as the third prize option.

Thanks so much, again, to every Ramone among the Seasonistas. Now, please excuse me while I... "ONE TWO THREE FOUR"...
