HOW TO MAKE UKULELE MUSIC SOUND SAD

Here's how I do it.

1. Play it slower than you feel you want to.
2. Sing deeply and breathily.
3. Put a croak in your voice, like you're on the verge of tears.
4. Sound like you know what the song means.
5. Leave some silences.
6. Put in a dainty little counter-melody.
7. Don't play too many notes.
8. Pick a song about sickness or premature death.
9. Sing quietly and get close to the microphone.
10. Don't ever smile or laugh.

Not entirely serious - but it works.

Really lovely Ken, beautiful performance mate. Shame you ruined it by smiling at the end...he he :p

One more?

11. Use a minor key :)

Good thread/point. Isn't there a way to weave into you chord progression like minor chords or something.

There are probabaly better examples, but like thowing in a Dm (which is in contruft, but not definition, a F with a d) right as you finish playing an F chord.

It was barely a smile though. More of a look of deep melancholy really.

Yes, you are right. You can certainly do that. I am just trying to show that major chords aren't necessarily happy. Some of the saddest songs (like Abide With Me or The Minstrel Boy) use mainly major chords.

That was nice. I liked the bit at the end -- very pretty.

(But I always thought The Minstrel Boy was quite a jolly little ditty.)

I haven't been anywhere, Stan. Too often I am away at festivals and trade fairs though.
