Hey UU,

I've recently been to a Ukulele shop and overheard a conversation.
Apparently a person said that black strings are meant for fingerpicking
while clear strings are meant for strumming.

I'm not sure if that is true because I always thought it's just a matter
of branding, which color that manufacturer is used to making and that
it does not affect the sound quality.

Hope someone can enlighten me on this issue.
Thanks.

Cheers,
Nick

Hi Nick and welcome to the forum.

I think the statement that you have made, or overheard, is is a gross over generalization of different colored strings. Some manufacturers make only one color, and some make mulitple colors. Some strings are high G some are low G, yet both of these could used for fingerpicking or strumming.

In the case of Worth strings, their strings come in two colors (clear and brown). They state their clear strings are brighter sounding and their brown strings are warmer sounding. So in this case, you could say you like warmer strings (brown) when fingerpicking, then the brighter strings (clear) when strumming, even this is subject to the players personnal preference. I use Worth browns for both strumming and fingerpicking because I like the warmer tone of that string. I also really like Living Water Strings, they only come in one color and again, I like the tone and use these for both fingerpicking and strumming.

If you are new at playing Uke and have a Uke with a dark colored fretboard, I suggest staying with either clear or white strings. Only because they are easier to see against the darker color fretboard. Once you get to the point where you don't need to look at the strings when playing, it would not matter.

Hope this helps.

The color of strings doesn't really matter, basically it's the kind of material used to get the tone, sound and feel you are looking for.

That would be cool on an Outdoor Uke or a black Dolphin at Hallowe'en.

I hadn't heard of those because there's hardly anything I've heard of, but those are pretty neat! Four strings isn't really enough to make a rainbow, I suppose. It would be neat if a single string had multiple colours.
