Hello,

Long time uke player, but this is my first post here.

I dabble in wood work, mostly furniture and boxes. I try to hunt down reclaimed wood for my projects and recently I came across some 6 in wide, 3/4 in thick planks of western red cedar. There were several pallets and a dozen+ planks were quarter-sawed with 18+ grains per inch. I made a couple cigar boxes out of some of the random cuts and from that perspective the wood was perfect. What else should I look at to determine if the cedar would make a good soundboard?

Thanks!
Joe

Joe, It sounds like you already have the formula. Well quartered, strait grain, good looking, defect free. The number of grain lines per inch is mostly for looks.

Great! Thanks for your replies. This will be my first uke build. I'll start with a cigar box style uke and save the best pieces for full a uke build down the road.
