Hi all - been away from here for a bit, been SO busy and away again next week - would be good to take part in the Seasons again this time if I can! But I'm a little confused - help! the way I read it, the band/artist has to have 3 words as well, yes? I see entries that don't do that - have I got it wrong?

As I read it it's extra bonus points, so not required, so just three words title required.

Question. Do parentheses count towards the word total? I.e., if the song is The La Song (La La La La HEY), does that count as three words or eight?

parentheses????? i thought thats what you called your mom and dad when you have something stuck in your teeth,

i would say the stuff in brackets doesnt count. unless of course you want it to,

I hate ducks ( cos they quack too much) = 3 words
I (like ducks) = 3 words

Point of clarification, does the 'The' count towards the three words of a band's name (for the extra credit)?

I mean, I know 'The The' doesn't count, cause that's only two words, but can we assume that 'The Black Crowes', 'The Traveling Wilburys' or 'The Grateful Dead' are all three-word bands?

The Hedge Inspectors did debate this, and we decided that THE rolling stones are called the rolling stones so technically it is a three word band name

Thanks, my first full take was 8 minutes, I cut it down to 6 in this second take. Still not as long as Uncle Elvis his songs in C medley in Tina's mashup week season. I think that was thirty brilliant minutes.

oh you mean his "do a whole gig without taking a breath mash up" was it only 30 minutes? it felt much longer LOL .........JOKE!

I don't have time this week to work up a new song, but I hope to get a couple of songs done that are already in my repertoire. This is "Brand New Cage", one of my favorite original songs. And one of the oldest. I wrote the lyrics in 1979 based on a dream I had, and wrote the music on keyboard over 30 years ago.

Lyrics:

Someone's got a new cage
Just slipped it on around
It's security in old age
On a favorite spot of ground

The big room lets no sun in
Not made to let in sound
The children outside playing wind up toys
They watch it spin around

We've got no shadows
New sofa
New vistas opening up every day

The old couple leaning back
Wave to the children outside
Who look in at them through the steel bars
And wonder "What would it be like to ride?"

We've got no shadows
New sofa
New vistas opening up every day

There's enough space in between the bars
You could climb in there and sit
But it's not that easy to get out
It's so comfortable to submit

We've got no shadows
New sofa
New vistas opening up every day

Here is my entry this week:

Unity in Diversity by my old band the Magic Ox Band

This song was inspired by the teachings of the Baha'i faith. The only religion I'd join, if I were ever to "see the light". A religion that teaches all of the things outlined in the song, plus the equality of the sexes and the value of all religions is a definite step in the right direction. Oh, and their prophet said he was the prophet for this age, not for all eternity! A lot of sensible things in the Baha'i way of seeing things.

Nice one Berni.
One of my favourite buildings in Sydney is the Baha'i Temple in the northern suburbs. It is on a ridge in bush land and can be seen from miles around. It is 9 sided as apparently all their temples are. Huge dome and very white too. It has been there for as long as I can remember.

thanks, Mike.... yep, that crackerfarm YT channel is one of my favorites. It's funny, I love the Avett Bros. YouTube stuff, at crackerfarm and elsewhere, but I'm not a big fan of their records. The songs are great and I love them when they're performed in a spontaneous, front porch kind of environment, but I'm not crazy about how the records are produced, I guess. I've picked up lots of tunes from crackerfarm by various artists, so it's been a big influence lately...... here's the latest crackerfarm tune I've been working on for guitar - this guy's an amazing songwriter based in Nashville: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhqBvIjUn1k (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhqBvIjUn1k)

Here's Score from Augusta. Originally by Beulah. A band from San Francisco who released a couple of nice albums around the turn of the millennium. This is the opening song from When Your Heartstrings Break, our favorite Beulah album from 1999.

The Chop Waltz a.k.a.'Chopsitcks' - Booli Deano contest entry for Krabbers Season 70 on http://www.ukuleleunderground.com: 'Three Little Words'

This is my FIRST :):

song that I learned to play on piano & guitar when I was a tiny person

public video
contest entry
attempt at multi-cam video editing (painful at best) :(

Please note that as per the Season 70 contest for 'Three Little Words':

The song title is three words (The Chop Waltz)
The songwriter originally published this music under an alias that is three words in the name (Arthur de Lulli)
There are three SIMULTANEOUS camera angles of me performing the song

see info about this song here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chopsticks_%28music%29).

Inspired by the late, great John King (http://youtu.be/nr_Zhy5zkus) and learnt from a tutorial by Uncle Raggy (http://youtu.be/EUEwCHe_PCc) .

http://youtu.be/BWLTmTAh8Z0

Also direct link to this video's YouTube page (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWLTmTAh8Z0&feature=youtu.be), just in case the embed here does not work.

Video was recorded on iPhone, iPad, & old Apple Firewire iSight camera (all @ 640x480 native resolution, and ALL simultaneously but at different camera angles.

Audio is via Mi-Si pickup (self-installed) going into a Behringer Tube Ultragain MIC200 preamp, and the into a Zoom MultiStomp MS-100BT pedal for eq, compression, and a tiny bit of reverb, and then into my Mac Mini via Griffin iMic directly into Quicktime 7.6.6 Pro.

Then all the parts were assembled and rendered into the end result via iMovie'11 before uploading to YouTube.

Sorry, but if you ask me for the chords, I can't name them for my life, see the Uncle Raggy tutorial linked above, that's how I locked it down after fiddling with it by ear in a different key. I only got this ukulele (KALA KA-T tenor) at the end of March 2013, so I've only had it like 3 months and it's still a mystery to me.

The most videos that have been submitted for any one of the Seasons has been in about the 100 range. So it would be a sign that it has been a successful season. And it's a nice round number.

It's also a sign of stamina on the part of the host to be able to watch that many videos and comment on them.

A good many of the Seasons challenges attract about 35-45 entries, plus another 40 bonus songs that are second songs by the entrants. But each host sets the week's specifics, and krabbers just said for everyone to post as many songs as you want, with no distinction. He's having loads of fun and wants to blow the lid off the popsicle stand. There are about 30 more hours to submit for for week 70.

Booli, big props to you for posting a multi-camera song for Seasons only three months after getting your uke! That is really something and you should be proud. Welcome to the Seasons! Play on!

Hi Ginny,

Thank you for your kind words. Full disclosure (as mentioned in my intro message a few months back (http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/showthread.php?79842-Hello-from-NJ!&highlight=)) is that I am a long time mulit-instrumentalist to feed my (hobbyist, for now) songwriting habit, /previously/ with guitar as the focus, so a 'slab of wood' with some metal wire or nylon strung across the top at high tension is not foreign to me at all. (no disrespect meant here, just trying to be humble and self-deprecating).

Let me be clear - I Love My Uke.

(Right now if my house were on fire, after people and pets were safe, I'd run back in to get my Kala KA-T, and leave all my guitars for the insurance claim.)

Yes, I know, it's a commodity instrument ($119 everywhere), Made In China, but the sound is so dulcet, so true, the wood just SINGS. (linear-tuned Aquila Nylgut with PhD. unwound low-G).

I got a good one, and after all it's the one I got for myself, for my Birthday. It's not my first (see my introduction post (http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/showthread.php?79842-Hello-from-NJ!&highlight=)), for that one is 'resting now' until I can get a proper case for it, and 'learn' to appreciate 1950's friction tuners.

It was easier for me to read sheet music for Bb Trumpet and compose/transpose for that instrument than it currently is for me to read ukulele tabs (never did before, either standard notation or chord pictograms and lead sheets). I always was kind of a snob for guitar tabs, and dismissed them. I kind of regret it now. Maybe I should not have.

A wise man on these forums once told me to not worry about naming the notes so much, but to focus on the portable 'patterns' that I can bring over from decades of guitar experience, and to build strength/confidence from that to avoid getting discouraged.

So I've been doing that, running scales, and finding chord fingerings that would be completely impossible on guitar (unless you can palm a large watermelon), and sound very nice and actually PLAYABLE on the ukulele because your fingers can cover many more frets. I'm almost afraid to pick up the classical guitar, like I wont be able to reach the notes that I'm used to on the ukulele. Chords with 13ths, 15ths, and past the 8th fret even 17ths are possible and I have small hands with stubby meat fingers.

I've discovered that I can fret and voice chords now with note inversions that are spread out across a 2-octave range, and HOLY COW, there's now SPACE in the notes to overlay both MELODY and HARMONY over the chords, without everything sounding muddy. For me as a hobbyist songwriter, this is a REVELATION.

You can see a little of this 'inversion' use during the second phrase of my video entry for this contest. Initially I learned this phrase on the bottom two strings alone, but going from 8th fret, down to 3rd fret and then back to 5th fret then down to 3rd fret, seemed like a lot of wasted movement and energy, so I sought a way to play those 'secondary fifths' starting higher up the neck as I was simpler and faster to jump across strings than to move back and forth from one end of the neck repeatedly and still try to keep a tempo near 95 bpm.

The ukulele is a REVELATION to me via it's simplicity (which sometimes escapes me) and it's unlimited versatility. The instrument, by it's very nature seems to have significant mental, emotional and physical cathartics effect upon me. It's like a musical meditation. I am simply mesmerized both when I play, and when I hear others play as well. (I will master Jake's 'Piano Forte' one day :>)

I was previously working on another song (Frank Loesser & Hoagy Carmichael) - also played repeatedly by small children (much to the chagrin of their parents) and other beginners on piano like my song entry here).

I'm not going to mention it directly, as others may already have their versions rehearsed and I don't want to steal anyone's thunder here.

I have a great arrangement for this song (all in my head) with 3 different musical 'parts', but I do not yet possess the technology nor the patience for a multi-track audio AND multi-cam video editing project. (I really have to upgrade my computer soon). Garageband and similar is easy, but a video editing program like Garageband that allows you to ALSO edit multi-cam video as easily is not within easy reach for me now. SO I had to let that one go, for now.

I realize now that I may have gone way off on a tangent here, but I apologize to all, as I have allowed my enthusiasm from getting my first ever happy comment to my video entry to make me giddy.

Hopefully my requirements for atonement will be not-so-painful.

Pretty please?

Again, Ginny, thank you for your kindness.

I'm late this week because I've been attempting my first multitrack video. It's my attempt at a song from an album I absolutely love "Treatment Bound: A Ukulele Tribute to the Replacements" by Bright Little Field. The song is "Can't Hardly Wait" Feedback on my first multitrack recording would be appreciated. There are some tracks I added that were audio only. Who want's to see me shaking egg shakers for 3 minutes? ;)

Also: I got a some kind of copyright warning from this. Like YouTube scanned it and thinks I am using an original recording for background music or something. Does that mean my rendition is too close a copy?

Hi ukuLily,

If you've emailed the link to yourself, then you can can open that email on the iPad, but do NOT tap the link, but then press-and-HOLD (for like 2-3 seconds) on the link (blue underlined text), and then the popup window will have an option to COPY (to the clipboard), and then when you are on the forum, and in the message editor, and you click the LINK icon in the message formatting toolbar, when the box pops up asking you to input the URL, if you press-and-HOLD again inside the white box area (where it says 'http://') you should also get another little iOS popup with the option to PASTE the clipboard contents.

If you also/instead click on the filmstrip icon, and then press-and-HOLD into the white box that pops up, and then PASTE the link into there, it will actually EMBED the video into the content area of your message, which seems to be the way I am seeing everyone else do it here.

There are many seemingly 'hidden' functions with press-and-HOLD on different items in iOS. This is one of them. It's what I've been told they call a 'modal' interface, where there is a second layer of functions depending upon the context, and in this case the context includes not just TAP, but HOLD to get to the secondary functions.

Please try the above and let me know.

If this is too far off topic for this forum thread, feel free to message me direct. Thanks!

Keep up the good work.

Thanks booli. I saw a basic tutorial on youtube that covered the bases for me and the author was using a pro version of Magix Movie Editor. I grabbed a copy of the 30 day trial and started working with that. My only recording hardware is a cheap Flip UltraHD camera. I record the basic track listening to the original on headphone and then imported that into Magix. Then I recorded the additional parts listening to my version playback and filling what I could discern as the additional parts. What initially sounded like a simple song actually has at least 5 different uke tracks, some shakers, a bongo, and some harmony parts i did not attempt. The software lets you display the video and audio waveform on separate lines. Then you just need to line up the wave forms visually until they are in sync. Once they are playing together, you can open up a mixer and adjust the audio levels for each track as desired and apply some effects as well. Here's the tutorial I used Tutorial: multitrack-video how to record and edit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-JSkXJ3LGc)

The most videos that have been submitted for any one of the Seasons has been in about the 100 range. So it would be a sign that it has been a successful season. And it's a nice round number.

It's also a sign of stamina on the part of the host to be able to watch that many videos and comment on them.

although my comments have been sometimes short and sweet i can honestly say i have watched every second of every video posted in this thread, some more than once.

I'm late this week because I've been attempting my first multitrack video.
Great. well done on the multi tracking . superb job, one thing i would is change camera angle for each shot, maybe a nice long shot down the neck or something, i have to have ago at another multi track multi shot video, i haven't done one for ages,

anyways this was superb well done,

i dont know how youtube does it but we at the unplugthewood jam uploaded a really bad version of a song once, it was soo bad it was funny. we didnt tag it as the song there was no mention of the song or artist, within seconds of uploading we were hit with a copy-write warning, they must have some clever stuff runniing, or maybe there is some poor guy with vast musical knowledge listening to everything uploaded

So I had a song, an apartment all to myself, and an entire weekend with nothing to do. Then I got 100% c$%kblocked by this:

All of which I have to have read by tomorrow so I can start writing this paper on Hawaiian language revitalization efforts and challenges. I've got one of those books down and half stack of articles.

I'm sorry I missed your week Krabbers, it was a most excellent week!

"It's Only Time," by The Magnetic Fields—another 3-3 entry.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFobuxM5zM0

My first time trying the picture-in-picture thing with iMovie. I did a fairly crappy job of it, but at least there's no weird disembodied second vocal. I added a bunch of different voicings to the arrangement I found online to help to add interest with the solo instrumentation. Here's what I came up with:

C C5
Why would I stop loving you a hundred years from now?
F F7 C
It's only time. It's only time.
C C5
What could stop this beating heart once it's made a vow?
F F7 C
It's only time. It's only time.

Dm F7 G7
If rain won't change your mind, let it fall.
Dm F7 G7sus4
The rain won't change my heart at all.

C C5
Lock this chain around my hand. Throw away the key.
F F7 C
It's only time. It's only time.
C C5
Years falling like grains of sand mean nothing to me.
F F7 C
It's only time. It's only time.

Dm F7 G7
If snow won't change your mind, let it fall.
Dm F7 G7sus4
The snow won't change my heart, not at all.

F7
(I'll walk your lands)
C G7sus4
I'll walk your lands
F7
(and swim your sea)
C G7sus4
and swim your sea.
F7
Marry me,
C G7sus4
marry me
F7
(and in your hands)
C G7sus4
and in your hands
F7
(I will be free)

C G7sus4
I will be free.
F7
Marry me,
C G7sus4
marry me
C
Why would I stop loving you a hundred years from now?
