After months of dreading my makala baritone's red coloured finish, I finally had enough of it! Since it's my holidays, I've decided to start a new project which involves sanding down the finish of my makala (and maybe my other ukulele too), restaining it and then polishing it to give a nice shine.

The main goal is to make it a nice and shiny natural brown like a Kala mahogany ukulele. Initially, the colour was this:

After I sanded the soundboard's finish off:

After I applied a wood stain that I found in the basement:

For those who dislike their cheap ukulele's finish, you should try it out aswell!

looks like a real improvement!

keep uke'in',

PS how long did the entire process take you?

Heyy rod, the soundboard didn't take that long, maybe 30 minutes to an hour to sand it down and stain it? I looked closely at my can of stain and realised that it was 'stain & varnish' so I don't need to go ahead with the whole varnish stage!

Do you have a before pic of the sound board? It really looks sharp now!

I did the same to my Mainland Red Cedar Concert a few years back.
I painted the top black with black laquer and then clear , came out good.

Hey skitzic, here you go! tumblr_moru97egYD1qb0265o1_500.jpg

Hey pete, did the job affect your ukulele's sound at all?

I've decided to strip down everything and remake it into my own personal uke.
