In English known as "Peat Bog Soldiers" this is the original german version called "Die Moorsoldaten". It's a song from prisoners of the Nazi concentration camp Boergermoor in World War II, written in 1933. For detailed background information please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peat_Bog_Soldiers.
Here I animated members of the german ukulele club to sing the refrain with me. By adding one voice per refrain it has a nice inclining effect ending with somewhat like a choir.

Very tragic subject and song. Thanks for performing it with the group. Jerry Silverman (one of my favourite editor's of world folk songs) came out with a book a few years back:
