Hello, i just got a kanilea ukulele and a really want to get a pick up installed however HMS is backed up and isn't taking anymore orders and kanilea isn't responding to me. I would have my local guy (13th street guitars) put it in but the kanilea bridges seem like its alot more difficult then a standard bridge. So would you just wait till HMS can take more orders, keep trying to contact kanilea or is it easy to but a pickup in a kanilea so the guy by me would be able to do it.

Any advice would be great
Thanks

I would take it anyplace that does guitars. Similar set up and they are used to drilling into expensive instruments.

Did you get your Kanile'a from HMS?

I think they send it back to Kanile'a if you want a pickup installed...
why Didn't you tell Mike/Andrew to install it before they sent to you?

I agree with this. They should be bonded and insured too, if they are a reputable business.

Not sure I'd want to mess with my Kanilea bridge if I had one, would prefer a quality soundboard pickup like K&K or ?????

I second the stringed instrument specialist music store idea that tigeralum suggested.

I don't understand why you don't want your local guy to do it? I'd hope that they've seen a pin bridge before.

I have no opinion on the pickup itself; I'm strictly acoustic.

This won't be too hard to 13th St guitar...Talk to Hugh as he's done much more difficult tasks. A Kanilea looks even easier as the saddle should slide right out.

Hey Daniel

you think he should change to Ebony Bridge Pins...and take out the plastic ones? or does not matter....

Purely cosmetic... but I like the look. Just did this to my vintage Martin. I'm sure that will offend some of the vintage people, but I think it is an improvement. (No worries, I kept the original plastic/bakelite pins).

Up to the young fellow...ebony is sweet and I priced them at McCabes in Santa Monica but they like $40...The plastic black ones were 75 cents each!

If it's a lifer uke, I would do it but you know me, I don't keep things too long.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Ill call 13th street guitars and talk to him about it. And what are ebony bridge pins? Are they just for looks or are there some advantages to them?

@hawaii50 I bought the uke from island bazzar. I had one at HMS that I wanted but I really liked the one I got a lot more. It was like a 6-8 week wait and island bazzar gave me a great price

The bridge pins are made from real ebony instead of plastic...purely cosmetic

Hey Daniel...wow those bridge pins must have solid gold dots

at Stew Mac or even Hanalima maybe $10..00 at the most?

guitars worth any kind of money have ebony or horn for bridge pins...Kanile'a the only company that uses plastic bridge pins...but it is up to you...I have Ebony bridge pins in my Kanile'a and my Graziano...and if I order a Ko'olau they come with ebony or horn bridge pins...

people say more vibration...but your choice...

They sold them in sets of six but I would recommend SM or Hanalima instead...maybe they were $30 but I just remember them being really expensive as it's a retail store...they sell most things at MSRP.
